Task #2-How to update wireless settings on printer

Connect wireless printer with touchscreen control panel The following document provides troubleshooting information for reconnecting a previously installed wireless printer. This may occur when you change the Internet Service Provider (ISP) or use a new router. When settings such as network names/passwords are updated the printer must be reconfigured with these new settings.

You will need your WPA Passphase to reconnect, see Find Your Wireless WEP, WPA, WPA2 Password (Windows) for more information.

Access will be via the Wireless Setup Wizard on the printer touchscreen.

NOTE: Information is model dependent. Touchscreen buttons and screen names may vary slightly.

1. From the home screen, touch the Wireless icon . 2. Touch Settings. 3. Touch Restore Network Defaults. You may have to scroll to the second screen to see this

option.

Touch Yes to confirm. This will restore the default network settings. This may take a few minutes to complete.

4. Scroll up to the first screen and touch Wireless Setup Wizard. The printer searches for available networks. Touch the name of your wireless network.

5. If the wireless network does not display, scroll to the last entry and touch Enter New Network Name, type the name of your wireless network.

You must type the exact name, including upper/lower case letters.

Task #3-How to improve scan quality

Improve Scan Quality This documentation helps to improve the quality of your scanned items.

NOTE: This information is for scanning only, for print quality issues go to HP Customer Support. Examples of poor scan quality

1. Clean scanner glass and lid with a soft, lint-free cloth sprayed with glass cleaner. CAUTION: To protect printer parts, do not spray the cleaner directly on the glass/lid. For additional information see Cleaning scanner glass.

2. Reset the printer to calibrate. For more information see Reset printer. 3. If your printer has an automatic document feeder (ADF), clean the rollers and separator pad. See

Clean automatic document feeder (ADF) rollers or separator pad for detailed instructions. 4. Change the scan settings to increase resolution/contrast and adjust the color palette. See

Change the scan settings with HP Support Assistant (Windows) for more information.

You may need to service or replace the printer if the above suggestions did not help resolve the scan quality issue. Contact HP Customer Support for additional help. Confirm your warranty status at HP Product Warranty Check.

Cleaning scanner glass To help improve scan images, clean the scanner glass and underside of the scanner lid to remove smudges or dust build up.

NOTE: The following instructions are for printers with a flatbed scanner glass and lid only, for printers with a document scan feeder see HP Customer Support.

Refer to the figure for location of the parts.

CAUTION: Do not spray cleaner directly on glass or lid, this may cause damage to interior parts of the printer.

1. Turn off printer and disconnect power cord. 2. Lift scanner lid. 3. Spray a lint-free cloth with glass cleaner and wipe white scanner lid backing (A), white scanner

lid strip (B), the glass scanner strip (C) and scanner glass (D). Wipe until clean, dry and streak free. Then close the scanner lid.

4. Reconnect power and turn on printer. 5. Scan document/photo.

If issue continues see Improve Scan Quality for additional suggestions.

Reset printer To improve scan quality, resetting the printer can help to calibrate the device. The printer should be on for the reset.

NOTE: HP recommends the printer power cord be plugged directly to a wall outlet.

1. Remove items from scanner glass or automatic document feeder (ADF), then close lid. 2. Disconnect power cord from printer, then unplug from wall outlet. Wait 60 seconds. 3. Plug power cord back into wall outlet. Reconnect power cord to printer.

NOTE: If you have an HP DeskJet 3700 series printer, calibrate the scanner after resetting.

4. Scan document/photo. If issue continues see Improve Scan Quality for additional suggestions.

Clean automatic document feeder (ADF) rollers and separator pad If your printer is equipped with an automatic document feeder (ADF), cleaning dust or residue on the rollers and separator pad can improve scan quality.

NOTE: The location of the ADF may vary by printer, but the steps listed still apply to all.

For the following steps you will need a clean lint/fiber-free cloth and distilled, filtered or bottled water. CAUTION: Tap water can damage the printer.

1. Remove document from the ADF and turn off the printer. 2. Disconnect the power cord to the printer. 3. Open the ADF cover and locate the paper pick rollers and separator pad.

Example rollers and separator pad in a LaserJet printer

4. Lightly dampen the cloth with filtered/distilled water. Remove excess water from the cloth. 5. Wipe residue from the rollers and separator with the damp cloth. 6. Keep the ADF cover open for two minutes to allow the parts to dry. Once dry, close the ADF

cover. 7. Gently reload the document print side up in the feeder tray, slide as far as it can go. 8. Slide in paper width guides until they rest against the paper. Avoid bending the paper. 9. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer. Scan document.

If issue continues see Improve Scan Quality for additional suggestions.

User Groups The following users would reference this documentation.

New User This printer would most likely be used by a consumer in the home. This printer would not be used in a professional setting. Specifically, a new user would want to access the printer for basic functions. For example, how to set up the printer out of the box. They might have an immediate need for printing documentation or cancelling a print job. A new user has most likely used a printer in a past, either at home or at school/work. They may user a computer or smartphone daily, but may not use a printer every day. They might have looked at the quick setup poster, but unless they have an urgent need, they probably will not refer to the user manual at all. They will probably look for a quick answer online.

Experienced User An experienced user has worked with this printer in the past. Like the new user they are most likely using this device in the home. The experienced user is comfortable using a computer or smartphone every day and utilizes technology in their daily life. The experienced user feels more secure with this printer and has started using it beyond the basic functions. They may use it to print photos on specialty paper or update wireless settings. They will go online to look for answers to the specific questions they have. They might have the printer’s website bookmarked on their web browser. Like the new user, they want answers quickly without much additional information.

Experienced User-Advanced An experienced user with advanced knowledge has used this printer very often. They know what the device can do and most likely will seeks out additional information to enhance its performance, for example improving scan quality. Like the other users, they probably use this printer in the home, but they are probably technically savvy and use computers/smartphones at home as well as professionally. They will use the online manuals or user documents to learn more about the device and are comfortable with performing user tasks. Like the new and experienced users, they do not want to waste time looking for answers, but if a task includes additional information, they will sometimes utilize it.

Assumptions When working on the documentation of these tasks I did take into account a number of assumptions. I’ve had personal experience with this printer and had a number of frustrating occurrences while using it. So, I’ve tried to be mindful of the user and attempted to be as helpful as possible. From eliminating or combining steps or by adding images I’ve attempted to tell the user’s story. By using the principles of minimalism I’ve tried to cut out any unneeded waste and provided a clear and quick answer to questions. Fortunately, I’ve had the printer in front of me, so I’ve been able to perform usability testing for some of the procedures to check for accuracy as well.

Page 17: Design and write minimalist documentation (UA/help) Final · 2020. 7. 1. · Reset printer . To improve scan quality, resetting the printer can help to calibrate the device. The printer

17

I’ve also had my own assumptions while determining the types of user who would access the documentation. This is not based on scientific research, but mainly by watching how this printer is used in my home. My wife, daughter and I have used this printer for the past 2 years. And after this project I would consider myself an experienced user, while I would count my wife and daughter as new users. They only use the printer to print documents or make photocopies. They have never changed a ink cartridge or referenced a user manual. I know how to perform basic maintenance on the printer and I have sought out answers to questions I’ve had by looking online, even prior to the start of this project.
