DESIGN A BETTER BREAKFAST

Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. The word breakfast comes from ‘breaking the fast’ – because it’s the first meal you have after fasting (not eating) overnight.

In this activity, you’ll be designing a healthy breakfast to give you a good energy boost at the start of the day. Grain-based foods like bread and cereals are great for breakfast because they fill you up and release energy slowly throughout the morning.

You can present your work in loads of different ways... PowerPoint, models, writing, practical, photos/videos for example – so challenge your self and make it exciting. If you are struggling with your work or just need a bit of help, just ask your technology teacher.

Before you start, watch the video clips (clips 1-4 – intro, my favourite breakfast, toast and cereal) click here to see what people like to eat for breakfast. Then get your imagination going by watching the Tasty toppings video and the Super cereals video.

Compulsory Tasks (you must complete all of these tasks)

Research 1 1. First interview three friends about their breakfast habits. e.g. What do they eat for breakfast, what sorts of food do they enjoy, what sorts of food don’t they like?

Research 22. Find some recipe ideas for some great healthy breakfasts that are grain based. Include an image and some annotation (your thoughts, what makes them healthy, nutrition)

Design Ideas 33. Come up with some of your own ideas for a healthy breakfast that you and your friends would like. Draw your ideas and label them showing as much detail as you can. Evaluate your ideas. Explain how the foods in your breakfast idea contribute to a healthy diet. What nutrients do they contain?

Ideas help(from the video clips)

Breads and toppings- baguette- seeded bagel- pitta – wholemeal or white- sliced wholemeal bread- low fat cheese spread- fresh herbs- reduced sugar jam- low fat houmus- tomatoes

Cereals and toppings- muesli- bran flakes- chopped bananas- mixed nuts- dried fruit- seeds- honey

But how about using cereals or grains in a different way – you could use flour to make muffins or pancakes for example…..

Elective Tasks (you must complete a minimum of 1 task)

Moodboard4. Make a collage of images of healthy breakfasts. Include pictures, keywords, and any facts you think are important. Minimum size of the poster is A3.

Make designs that meet a range of needs for your consumer.

Design something that is realistic.

Be able to explain your ideas.

Label your sketches simply.

Evaluate your design to show how it can be improved. (2 , 1 wish)

Level 4

Use research (products & designers) to help generate ideas.

Show a number of ideas.

Think about constraints. (Things you will not be able to do due to time/ the material etc)

Use labelled sketches and models to show your ideas. Begin to add detail.

Evaluate your designs as they develop. (You may change things as you go along – give a reason)

Level 5

Use a few different sources of information as well as prior knowledge to help generate ideas.

Show an understanding of how culture and society are relevant when you develop and communicate your ideas.

Communicate a variety of ideas.

Show you are aware of constraints and how to tackle them.

Check your work as it develops. Test and evaluate your product, showing that you understand the situations in which the products will function

Level 6

Use various sources of information recognising the significance of others’ design work and showing that you understand the form and function of familiar products.

Develop detailed criteria for their products and use these to explore proposals.

Respond creatively to briefs, exploring and testing your ideas.

Evaluate your product in use, and identify ways of improving it. As well as evaluating how effectively you have used information sources.
