Research & Design Idea How time is important? By looking at the drop clock and the polar clock screen savers it is easy to tell that time is an important component into simple but effective data awareness which I could use as part of my piece for the exhibition design and the elastic mind brief. Design and the elastic mind Within the exhibition there seems to be a strong theme in design, science and technology. Which as my brief is to design a screen saver for the exhibition, should be the main elements or components to the final outcome I produce. Drop clock The screen saver uses super slow motion technology to show time passing by numbers falling into water and causing a ripple effect. Polar clock The clock uses basic elements to show the passing of time. Electric sheep The electric sheep project uses rendering of spiral and other shapes, which can then be, interbreed with other renders trying to replicate the a natural process. The idea of replicating a natural process is an interesting concept which I wish to incorporate into my design. Fibonacci spiral Fibonacci spirals are made from a set of numbers, which follow a certain pattern. The pattern being that the last two numbers add together to give the third number ie 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 This pattern appears in nature and in most things which incorporates an element of science and by creating a piece using this type of spiral links in with the idea created within the electric sheep project about replicating a natural process. Idea development From looking at different examples I release that to have a strong piece of work that meets the brief you needs to include simple minimal design, some form of science such as Fibonacci spirals and technology ie affects processing computer-generated graphics.

Development Feedback and evaluatingThe feedback I got from my first development was that my idea is good but visually the way it looks doesn’t fit within the brief as it would have to follow and aesthetic science and technology. I took these to mean that the way it was displayed was to messy and confusing to look at so I decided to create a piece which is more controlled uses less colour and try to incorporating the idea of Fibonacci numbers deeper into the design.

First developmentMy first development was very basic I wished to generate a spiral every set amount of time in a random place which over time will build up to form a giant spiral pattern

Second developmentThe second development I thought was a great leap forward from the first as it uses fibonacci numbers in several ways as the number of spirals come to 144. The spirals themselves are made from fibonacci numbers 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, and 55. The number of seconds the animation/ film lasts is 233 seconds and the number of spirals generated is 144. Instead of the spirals completely being placed at random points there are used to combined and form letters to give the piece a brand identity however the text could be changed to say anything.And in development 2 I used the font Tahoma, which isn’t meaningful to the design.

Final development In the final version all I did was change the font type to “Franklin Gothic Medium”

EvaluationOverall I believe that my final outcome fits inside this brief because of a combination of design, technology and science, which help generate a piece, which is visual appealing.The only problem I faced was coding as the brief states that the piece should be a processing sketch that mine isn’t at present however I have tried to generate a piece similar to this within processing with no success yet.
