TOPIC 1:INTRODUCTION TO
ENGINEERING DESIGN
Objectives By the end of this topic, students should
be able to: Define engineering design Differentiate between modes or levels of
engineering design List the reasons for failures in engineering
design Explain constraints in engineering design
Engineering Design Design is a creative process Design is exciting, challenging, satisfying and rewarding

Engineering Design Formal definition of engineering design based on
ABET:
“Engineering design is the process of devising a system, component or process to meet desired needs”
It is a iterative decision-making process in which the basic of sciences, mathematics and engineering sciences are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective.
Engineering Design Development of student creativity Open ended problems Application of modern design theory Formulation of design problem Solution of the design problem using state
of the art method and tools Consideration of economic factors,
reliability, aesthetics, ethics and social impact
Levels of engineering design It measures the degree of design difficulty. There are three stages:
Adaptive design Developed design New design
Levels of engineering design Adaptive design level:
Adaptation of existing design Minor modifications usually in term of
dimensions No special skill or knowledge is required
Levels of engineering design Development design:
Starts from an existing design, but the final outcome may differ from the initial product
Require more scientific training and design ability
New design: Totally new design (from scratch)
Failures in engineering design Some of disasters in engineering design:
Chernobyl nuclear power plant Challenger space shuttle Lost of engine and crash of a DC 10 airplane in
1979 MRR2 (Malaysian Scenario) ???
Reasons for failures in engineering design Incorrect or overextended assumptions Poor understanding of the problem to be
solved Incorrect design specifications Faulty at manufacturing and assembly Error in design calculations Incomplete experimentation and inadequate
data collection Errors in drawings Etc
Engineering constraints Consideration constraints that may
restrict our choices. Economic Environmental Ethical and Legal Health and Safety Manufacturability Political and Social – FDA, language? Sustainability
