SHRINE OFFICE HOURSMonday - Friday

9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Potentate’s MessageRudy F. Nobleza

I am honored to have the opportunity of serving as the Potentate of Al Bahr Shriners for this ensuing shrine year, 2021. As I begin my remarks, I hope each of you will be listening for how you can become more involved, and how you can volunteer your time, talent, treasure and energy as we roll out our

programs.

The month of February, 2021 was a very productive month for Al Bahr, we had our first virtual ceremonial, the election and installation of our new officers for 2021, and a stated meeting. The evening went quite well and the program had a nice flow. I am proud that my peers believe that I am deserving of the privilege and capable of serving you and the members of Al Bahr Shriners. But my remarks are less about me and who I am, and more about what I want to see us do this year as an organization.

I do not take the responsibility of being your Potentate lightly. In fact, for several months now I have been hard at work developing plans for the 2021 Shrine year with a team of dedicated nobles and friends who have helped me shape our programs for this year, and who have committed to assist me with the implementation of the same. Nobles (you know who you are), I thank you for all of the time and energy that you have provided toward this effort.

Luke 12:48 says, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded, and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” Being a Potentate is not a right. It is a privilege! Along with this privilege, comes a moral obligation to ensure that all the members of this great organization, and our patient children, have reasonable access to our fraternal and philanthropic services. Those of us honored with the privilege have a duty and a responsibility to make sure that we conduct our business with fairness and without malice. Noone should lack access to valuable services, especially our patient children, during the most vulnerable times of their lives. We will build a stronger citizenry and we will be a stronger entity as a result of our outreach.

Finally, I hope you will join me in working to increase the awareness of and relevance of what we do to all of our members. We can do better. We can do so much better. I hope to reverse this dynamic by reaching out to members, to communicate with them more effectively about the operations of our organization, services offered by us, and how they can get engaged in its programs and committees. I have already started this work as I made committee appointments. As I considered appointments, I worked to intentionally reach out to nobles who have not been as engaged in what we do. I have asked them to serve. I have also changed the leadership of numerous committees to foster new and fresh ideas across our committees.

It is important that all of our committees and sections not only do their work, but promote the work they are doing! To communicate this agenda, I will have to schedule a meeting with all of the committee chairs, club and unit leaders. In that meeting, we will discuss how, as a” Team”, we create a customer service mindset that helps us to be more relevant to our members.

I plan to work in an open and cooperative spirit and manner with my fellow officers and the members of the Executive Committee.

It is going to be a busy year. I am convinced that if we work together, we can build on an incredible foundation and legacy, and that we can do even better. I am committed to working with all of you to make Al Bahr more responsive to those in need of our services, more engaged and beneficial with our members, and I hope that you will support me in these efforts. I look forward to our work together. Let me know what you will do to help!

Thank you.

Peace Officers Shrine Club & Greeter Unit- Mike RandallAny Al Bahr member who is interested in either the Greeter Unit or the Peace Officer’s Shrine Club is welcomed to attend the meeting of the unit or club of your choice. If each of us just brings in one new member, we could be on our way to being the Unit or Club we once were. We need new members so if any of you wish to see what we do, please contact me below. Our Greeter meetings are held quarterly on the second Monday of the meeting month. For 2021 our meetings will be, Apr 12, July 12, & Oct 11. Our next Greeter’s meeting will on April 12, 2021 at 6:00 with social and dinner around 6:30 and 7:00 for our meeting.

Our POSC meetings are now held on third Wednesday of the meeting month. For 2021 our meetings will be April 21, July 21, & Oct 20. Our next POSC meeting will be on April 21, 2021 at 5:30 social with dinner and 7:00 for our meeting. ALL of these dates are “assuming” that we will be out of this COVID-19 lockdown.

Antique & Classic Car Club- Thomas MendozaI apologize for my non-contiguous club correspondence lately… Although we have been in lock-down, still we have a few accomplishments to list: 1. Detailed our 41 Buick and got it a new car cover for Christmas. 2. Fisher Bros. assembled a new enclosed sandblaster for club use. 3. Refurbished and donated an old boat trailer. 4. Cleaned and organized our shop. 5. Worked on Tom’s cars.

Spring cleaning is in the air… If you have any old cars or items that you would like to donate, we will gladly pick them up from your place. If a brother or sister is in need to help clean their garage, we would like to give you a hand. Contact us at [email protected] In our near future, we will be having some old shop and personally donated items for sale to benefit our club and the Al Bahr Shrine. We are looking forward to participating in some car shows, club rallies, and parades this year!

Our condolences to John Goodloe on the passing of his Lady Susan

Chaplain’s Message - Dave WinesettAnticipation...

Our thoughts…our hopes…our desires…how we interpret what we hear…what we experience each day – so many different elements have an impact on our anticipation of life. In turn, our anticipation affects all of those things, as well. At least to some extent, the nature of our anticipation and how we share it can be determinant for the reality of the event or situation anticipated. As stated in a quote by Samuel Smiles, “an intense anticipation itself transforms possibility into reality; our desires often being precursors of the things which we are capable of performing.”

Our faith in God is also based upon our anticipation of blessings we may receive in our lives and what He has promised for the hereafter. The Holy Writings state “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1.)One of the key definitions given for anticipation in Webster’s Dictionary is “visualization of a future event or state,” and often it is tied especially to a pleasurable expectation. As such, it is often expressed by using the terms “it is with great anticipation that…” This type of positive foresight tends to be contagious and creates a mindset for the highest potential result.

Positive foresight and great anticipation are characteristic of Shriners. That is the way we look forward to 2021 ending the pandemic. Even more so, it is the way we foretell the successful treatment for the hundreds of children in our Shriners Hospitals.

Past Masters - Abe RavitchStay safe and stay healthy.

4 MARCH/APRIL 2021

Legion of Honor - John GowenCongratulations to our new Nobles. Now that you are a member of the Shrine, it is suggested that you become active in two of our smaller organizations, a parade unit and a club which tend to be more social. If you haven’t been told already, it is all about our kids and their hospitals and having fun while we take care of them.

The Legion is a Parade Unit. We proudly carry the Flag of Our Country at the head of the Shrine’s parade entries. If you are a Veteran or Active Duty Military we would be honored to have you consider our patriotic unit. Please come join us at our next Zoom call at Noon on Saturday, March 27th. I’m looking forward to having our Nobles with military experience joining us, I also encourage everyone to be active, to help us advertise the great things we are doing for our kids, and to help support these worthy endeavors.

Recorder - John P. Harris Jr.I hope each and every one of you remains safe, healthy, and happy during these changing times. We are seeing the Covid vaccines rolling out and parts of our country start to open back up, either a little at a time, like California, or a lot, like Texas and other states. The important thing is we are starting to open back up and the numbers are trending in the right direction. It will not be long before we are allowed to have some in person meetings which then opens the road to have dinners with each other again. Keep safe and we will all be together again as Shriners and brothers very soon.

It was decided to save a little money we would combine the March and April AlBahr-o-Meter. Without anything changing the amount of content we had was hard to keep up with so we are saving a little money which is a good thing.

I put a report in for the Samaritan Drivers so you can see we are still sending kids and how much we are paying to do that. We could use donations to the Transportation Fund. Please consider a donation to our Transportation fund. Remember these are tax deductible donations. You can send donations to the office at: Al Bahr Shriners, Transportation Fund, 5440 Kearny Mesa Rd, San Diego, CA, 92111.Speaking of sending checks, it’s the time of the year that we check our dues to make sure we did not forget them. If you are having issues and need some assistance, please contact me in the office or by email and we will work something out. [email protected] or 858-292-0092. Al Bahr now can take your dues payments on line at https://shrinetempledues.org. If you choose to pay this way with a credit card, please consider donating $5.00 to the Al Bahr to cover the cost of credit card processing. You can also make donations to the transportation fund and SHC right there at the same time. You can also mail a check in to the office at: Al Bahr Shriners, 5440 Kearny Mesa Rd., San Diego, CA 92111

We created 12 new Nobles at the first virtual ceremonial and expect the Nobles from Mexico are working hard to surpass this number for the April 9th virtual ceremonial. It’s the momentum we need to get this big ball rolling again and be able to come out of the restrictions having fun together again. Until then, I have obtained a box of funny hats and will be wearing them on the remaining Zoom calls when we are not wearing Fez’s.

Thank you all for being Shriners and a member of Al Bahr.

Sinaloa Shriners - José Alfonso AguilarNobles, despite the fact that we all wanted this year to start with better news due to the pandemic, we must not lose faith, I am sure that we will overcome this unfortunate situation. Let us fondly remember the Nobles who have gone to walk through the sands of the black desert to take their place in the eternal Oasis, we miss them very much. Our Club lost two Nobles too, we miss them. In another order of ideas, due to the same situation of the pandemic, our blue lodge Mazatlán Number 37, located in Mazatlán Sinaloa (Mexico), will cancel the special celebration of the 100th anniversary, which will be postponed until next 2022. Said event consisted of one day of conferences with the history of our lodge and Masonic work in the afternoon to end with a dinner dance with live music in the evening. We hope to carry it out next year. But for practical purposes and taking into account the health recomendations carried out by the authorities, we will hold a meeting via Zoom with a small program to present to you. We will continue with the sale of Masonic souvenirs to raise funds for the celebration of 2021 that we hope will be very very special. Yours in faith.

I would like to purchase a Masonic Ring, Past Masters is preferable. Please contact me if you have a ring to sell.

Nobles, we are still not permitted to drive patients in the Vans and with the pre-opening of the Shriners Floor in the Angeles Hospital in Tijuana we have been primarily sending kids that need specialized treatments to Northern California (Sacramento). Costs f luctuate because of covid and schedules but we always look for the best way to get the kids where they need to go at the best cost for Al Bahr. Donations to the Transportation Fund have been slow over the past year but we are still sending our kids to the care they deserve and the best care they can get. Donations to the Al Bahr Transportation Fund make this happen and donations are always welcome.
