Description
This suction line filter / refrigerant cleaning assembly provides a replaceable pleated media filter core in a bypass arrangement from main suction flow to allow for preventative system cleanup following original installation, system repair, or rework associated with renovation.
The assembly is integral with bypass and main flow full port shut off ball valves, as well as a filter inlet check valve to prevent reverse flow and back flushing of contaminants in the event ball valves are not positioned correctly. An integral pressure relief device is also included to prevent over pressurization failure of assembly components and filter housing.

Purpose
The suction line filter assembly will enhance quality assurance on VRF project installations, minimizing potential migration of contaminants introduced during installation of field piping that may lead to long term damage of the compressor and other critical components.
Mitsubishi Electric VRF systems already have integral strainers located upstream of major system components; however, finer particles associated with improper nitrogen purge during brazing as well as other sediment / debris not properly removed from field piping prior to installation can pass through the mesh of built in system strainers and lead to potential wear and premature failure of certain components.
By providing a suction line filter of higher filtration efficiency during initial startup will ensure such foreign debris is not migrating to the compressor or other critical parts after startup. The filter assembly can also enhance success of compressor replacements on existing projects to ensure contaminants in the piping system associated with original failure are properly removed.
Use
The filter assembly would be installed in the main suction pipe ahead of the main suction connections on the Mitsubishi VRF outdoor units. For systems with one or more outdoor modules twinned together, the suction filter would be installed in the main suction pipe prior to any twinning.
During initial startup, before compressor are run for the first time, the suction line filter would be opened and the main bypass line closed to force 100% of suction line refrigerant flow through the filter media.
Following the included filter assembly startup procedure, a portion of the system’s indoor units are run in increments of approximately 1/3 the connected capacity, to flush all system refrigerant

through the suction filter assembly. This process is repeated in increments of 1/3 of the indoor units until all system components have been thoroughly cleaned.
After completion of the startup cleaning, the suction filter assembly is isolated by closing the integral ball valves and bypass ball valve opened to allow for full unrestricted flow to the outdoor unit and the rest of the system for normal operation.
