Notes for John Hale:(Research):Revolutionary War: John Hale "gave supplies". References: Kentucky Ancestors, vol.12-No.2, October 1976, Arlene Brachman and Kegley's Virginia Frontier, pg. 582.

The Henry Co., VA land records show John Hale Sr. sold land (which he received in 1783 as a grant) in Botetourt Co., June 1792. In that transaction he is listed as "of Franklin County". Witnesses were Thomas and Joseph Hale and William Campbell, son-in-law of Thomas Hale who married Jane Armstrong.

There is speculation as to whether John Hale Sr. had a brother and a son, William, and whether Thomas, Edward and Jesse were children of a brother William whom John Hale Sr. may have been caring for. There was a William Hale living in the area, possibly the same William Hale who was killed by Indians in 1774. (source: Hite Report; the Draper Papers doesn't say what happened to him) Daughter, Hannah is speculative. Note: Edward, Thomas and Jesse each named a son William and no son named John. There is a William Hale in the area in the area in the 1780's, who got land in Fincastle Co., VA in 1776. (Source: Arlene Brachman).

Sarah Pankhurst

It is believed that the Joseph Hale, who married Nancy Willis was a son of John Hale, Sr. who is said to have live on or near Bent Mountain, Virginia.

His children have been variously listed as

Benjamin, b: 1725-1738Thomas Hale; b: 19 Oct 1742; d: bet. 13 Jan - 19 October, 1812William Hale; b: 1750; d: abt. 1820John Hale, Jr.; b: abt. 1750; d: bet. Mar - Jul 1798Joseph Hale; b: Bet. 1751 - 1753; d: Jul 1791Mary Margaret Hale; b: abt. 1752; d: bet 1814 - 1815Elizabeth Hale; b: abt. 1761, d: 19 Aug 1839Jobe Hale; b: abt. 1764; d: 6 Nov 1792Abigail "Abbey" Hale; b: abt. 1765

Thomas Hale listed above is the Thomas who married Jane Armstrong.

Generation 2 (con't)

John is also said to have raised three of his nephews.Thomas, who married Agnes Price and lived in Montgomery Co., VA, Edward who married Martha Purdue and lived in Giles Co., VA and Jesse Hale, who married Nancy Huff and lived in Mercer Co., KY.

These Hale lines are very confusing due to the fact that the same names run through each branch of the various families.Though I have tried, where possible, to give each one of these men approximate birth dates where none is known. It makes them a bit easier to track.

I am still looking for John Sr.'s Last Will and Testament.According to various individuals this will names his children.I have yet to find it, but would be appreciative of anyone who can provide it to me.

On the Family Tree DNA website, you will see there are many Hale family members who have submitted their DNA.At my last review of the data, the DNA of people who can show positive connections to Edward, Thomas (Montgomery Co., and my ancestor), Archelaus, and Benjamin all have similar DNA, however Joseph does not.Does that mean Joseph was not one of John's sons? No.It simply means we need to do additional digging to discover the truth.

There is something that has bothered me through about the marriage of John Hale, Sr., Elizabeth and the children attributed to them.

1.If John and Elizabeth were married in 1730 - 1740 as has been ascribed to them, then why are their not more children shown earlier in their marriage? Most of the children are born 1750 or later.

2. To my knowledge, the only child where John and Elizabeth are shown to have been parents for certain is Elizabeth. There is a marriage record that provides this information.Yet even with this information, we can't be sure that this is the same John Hale and wife Elizabeth, although it is likely.

3.If, as has been said that John was born in 1706, then though it is not impossible, most of the children would have been born to him when he was in his mid-late forties - early sixties.Which I find suspect. However, my own great grandfather was having children in his late 50's.

John Hale and Elizabeth Prescott had the following children:i. JOB3 HALE was born about 1733 in Bent Mountain, Franklin County, VA. He died about 1790.

ii. HANNAH HALE was born on Aug 30, 1740 in Bent Mountain, Franklin County, VA. She died on Aug 30, 1790 in Franklin County, Virginia.

iii. WILLIAM HALE was born on Jan 13, 1750 in Franklin County, Virginia. He died in 1842 in Franklin County, Virginia. He married ELIZABETH.

iv. JOSEPH HALE was born in 1730 in Bent Mountain, Roanoke, County, VA. He died in Jul 1791 in Mercer County, Kentucky. He married Nancy Ann Willis, daughter of Joseph S Willis Sr. and Hannah Burnham about 1755. She was born in 1738 in Virginia. She died on Nov 02, 1834 in Mercer Co., Kentucky, USA.

This is headed "Death Certificates...Pennsylvania" but is clearly the testimony of our Thomas Hale attempting to get his Revolutionary War pension. His sister Hannah Gillespie testified on his behalf in court in Franklin County VA. He apparently lost his mustering documents and was illiterate so had a very difficult time proving his claim. Fortunately Congressman Claiborne exerted some pressure on the War Department and Thomas Rowe Hale was given his just reward. The hearing was conducted in Rocky Mount, then as now the county seat of Franklin County VA.

In Thomas' pension file, Lawrence Thompson a Lieutenant in Capt. Alfred Moore’s company and 1st Regiment of provincial troops enlisted him in Orange County, NC in September 1775. He had a brother named William who also enlisted in Orange County, NC. In late 1776 Thomas joined the 5th South Carolina Regiment. He was discharged May 12, 1780. Details of his service in the Continental Army are recorded below in his pension record, File Number S-37975, Certificate Number 6857.

Thomas Hale's first wife was Rachel Sheridan. They probably were married in North Carolina.

Thomas' wife Rachel Sheridan died in North Carolina unknown date but sometime after 1795 after Birth of Polly Hale.

On November 6, 1801, Thomas married Nancy Wood in Rowan Co., NC. Shortly after their marriage, Thomas and Nancy moved to Southwest Virginia. He selected a tract of land of Runnet Bag Creek in Franklin County, VA. A land transaction recorded in Deed Book No. 4, page 576 shows that Thomas Hale and his two sons, William and Francis, each bought 96 acres of land of Runnet Bag Creek on March 10, 1804, from John Via, Jr.

Dennis Sheridan witnessed all three deeds. He was probable brother of Rachel Sheridan).

Thomas kept his land until he applied for his Revolutionary War pension. The acreage is described in the application. He eventually sold it to a son-in-law. William kept his for ten or twelve years before he sold it. Census records tell us all of these Hales and their families lived in the Long Branch area of the county.

Thomas and his second wife Nancy Wood were parents of eight children. Five are listed below:

1. Ruth Hale, Born 18032. Jonathan Hale, b: May 28, 1805 in Franklin Co., VA3. Peter Wood Hale, b: August 21, 1809 in Franklin Co., VA4. Dennis Sheridan Hale, b: 18085. Elizabeth Hale, b: October 27, 1812 in Franklin Co., VA

Thomas Hale is listed in the 1820 census of Franklin Co., VA. His occupation is farmer. Below is a transcript of his testimony given in the application for Revolutionary War pension.

At a Superior Court of Law for the County of Franklin continued while at the courthouse the 21st day of October 1818.

Thomas Hale, of this county, this day made oath in Court, that he was enlisted in Orange County, NC by Laurence Thompson a Lieutenant in Capt. Alfred Moore's Company and 1st Regiment of provincial troops, for the balance of the term of one year, which said troops had to serve, and joined the Regiment at head quarters near Wilmington on Cape Fear River in said state, in the month of September, thence marched to Brunswick, where he stayed until spring, thence marched to near the cross creek against the Scotts, who we embodied under McCloud thence back to Wilmington, thence to Charlestown, SC, under the command of General Charles See, in the year 1776, that after the Battle of the 28 June 1776 on Sullivan’s Island, he among the rest of the NC Troops, were sent to Hadrel's Point, from thence to Sullivan’s Island, where he was taken sick and sent to the General Hospital, where he remained with many others, until the NC troops marched to the north, leaving their sick behind, with leave for such as recovered, to put the remainder of their line in the service to the south, That in the latter end of the year 1776, he jointed the 5th South Carolina Regiment, commanded by Col. Isaac Hugar, and in Capt. James Conger's company of Grenadiers for the term of three years, thence he marched to Savannah, George where the Americans had two engagements with the British and lost 87 rank & file, thence march back to Charlestown S.C. under the command of General Howe, where he left us under the command of General Benjamin Lincoln, and in 1778 or 1779 marched back to Georgia, where with the French troops they attempted to take the Town of Savannah from the Enemy by storm, but were repulsed, after this defeat were marched back to Charlestown S.C. where his Regiment was reduced and he was put in the 1st under the command of Col Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and in Capt. Thomas Gadsden's Company from thence were marched to Fort Moultrie, where they had an engagement with the British fleet, after this were sent back to Charlestown for its defense, but after a long siege were compelled to surrender it for want of provisions.

That his term of service expired about Christmas 1779, but upon the solicitations of Col. Pinckney, he among others remained in the service until Charlestown was surrendered as above mentioned, when he did on the 12 day of May 1780, apply to Col. Pinckney for his discharge and obtained it which said discharge, he has since lost.

That after he obtained his discharge, in order to affect his escape believing that the regulars would not be paroled, and that the militia could be, he parted with his uniform and disguised himself as a Militia man, and was paroled with Col. Hugh Tennin's regiment from Orange County N.C.

That he is worth only a small tract of land of about 96 acres, two cows, one work ox, sixteen head of hogs, eight sheep, that he is in the sixtieth year of his age, that he came to the County of Franklin, Va. in the year 1799 and acted as a bugle man in Capt. Daniel Smith's company of militia.

It also appeared from the Testimony of Hannah Gillespie a sister of the said Thomas Hale, that she well remembers when he was enlisted by Lawrence Thompson, who has some short time before been the schoolmate of her said Brother, and the son of her neighbor, and that he was four years and seven months absent from home, and as she supposed in the Militia service, that she saw her said Brothers parole by Clinton the commander of the Enemy and his discharge by Charles Cotesworth Pinckney.

The said Thomas Hale having been known to the Court for about fifteen years, who never heard anything to his prejudice is a man of truth, and that his Land lies in a part of the County where it is not considered as valuable, and the Court consider his property to be such as he has himself state it to be.

Whereupon it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that the said Thomas Hale served at

Sometime around 1759 he moved his family to Rowan County, North Carolina. His sons,Thomas and William went to school with Lawrence Thompson, son of Captain John Thompson. At the time of the Revolutionary War,Lawrence Thompson was a Lieutenant under whom Thomas and William Hale enlisted in Orange Co. NC a neighboring county where John, their father, had later moved to following his second marriage in Feb.1775. Thomas Hale was seventeen when he left home to fight in the Revolutionary War.According to his military record, he was enlisted in September 1775 as a private in Orange County, N. C. by Lawrence Thompson,a Lieutenant in Captain Alfred Moore's Company and 1st Regiment of Provincial Troops. His military service is detailed in the book "The Hale Family of Virginia" by Ester V. Bartlett, which was taken from his own testimony from a court schedule of October 22, 1823 in Franklin Co. Va. The military record of Thomas Hale is preserved in the National Archives, Washington, D.C. under Revolutionary Pensions, file number S-37,975, certificate number 6857. Thomas' brother, William Hale also made application for a Revolutionary War Pension, his file number is S-1522.

Thomas' wife Rachel Sheridan died in Rowan County, N.C. and he married Nancy Wood in Rowan County, N.C. on November 6, 1801.

Shortly after their marriage, Thomas and Nancy moved to Southwest Virginia.

He selected a tract of land on Runnet Bag Creek in Franklin Co. From a land transaction recorded in Franklin Co. (Rocky Mount ) Va. Deed Book No.4 page No. 576 proof is established that Thomas Hale and his two sons William and Francis each bought 96 acres of land on Runnet Bag Creek on March 10, 1804 from John Via Jr. All three deeds were witnessed by Dennis Sheridan ( probably the brother of Rachel Sheridan). Thomas Hale and his second wife Nancy Wood , were the parents of eight children, five sons and three daughters. They were born on the family farm on Runnet Bag Creek, Franklin Co. Va.

between 1750 - 1755 and Edward Hale of Giles County, Virginia, born about the same period although believed younger than Thomas, could be potential candidates for sons of Thomas Hale, Warrington Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania. They could also be the sons of William Hale the 6th child of Thomas and Hannah Hale, as some believe is likely.William was killed by indians possibly in the early 1770's.I am relatively certain that Edward and Thomas Hale were brothers. The families where connected quite closely, married into the same families and their grandchildren even married each other.

It is also known that the Henry Willis family of Chester County, Pennsylvania has a close relationship with John Hale, Bent Mountain, Virginia. That the Willis property in Chester Co., Pennsylvania is not that far from Thomas Hale's in Warrington Township. We believe in theory that the two families may have known each other before coming to Virginia. Several Willis family members married children of John Hale, Bent Mountain, Virginia.

John Hale, Bent Mountain, Virginia, is believed to be the uncle of my ancestor. Although I have theorized that he could possibly be an older brother and not just their uncle.

Additionally, Thomas Hale's property was adjacent to that of Robert Vale's and James Prunty. Robert received a land warrent in the mid 1740's and James Prunty about the same time as Thomas Hale.

There are Vale's and Prunty family members associated with the men of Montgomery and Giles Counties.

My alternate line of thinking came about, because my Thomas Hale (Montgomery County, VA) appears to have been accepted into the church community and the family of Michael Price, his father-in-law, quite freely. It was as if Thomas already knew these people before marrying into the family. The Price family came from the Lancaster County area of Pennsylvania and one of the first families in the Montgomery County area. Early records indicate that the Price "fort" may have been one of the first in the area.
