Inmost records Sampson was referred to as a "mulatto", and sometimes no racial designation was given, which was usually the case for"white" persons. It was not at all unusual for persons of mixed race to be referred to by different racial labels for the same person ondifferent records. Indians or mixed Afro-Indians were often referred to as "mulattoes", "negroes", and even as "blacks" in earlyMassachusetts records. Frequent intermarriage between Afro-Americans and American Indians in the 17th through 19th centuries inMassachusetts was due largely to what historian Daniel Mandell called a "complimentary gender imbalance"- a surplus of Afro malescomplemented by a surplus of Indian women due to more male Africans being enslaved than females, and Indian males being killed, captured and sold into Caribbean slavery during the colonial era Indian wars. (See, Mandell, Daniel R. “Shifting Boundaries of Raceand Ethnicity: Indian-Black Intermarriage in Southern New England, 1760-1880”, Journal of American History, September, 1998).An excellent book that deals with the topic of racial labelling of mixed black, Indian, and white people in the colonial era is Forbes,Jack D. Africans and Native Americans: The Language of Race and the Evolution of Red-Black Peoples (Chicago, University ofIllinois Press, 1993).5. No parents are mentioned for her in the Vital Records, but the IGI has her mother listed as"Mary Crouch". There are also no other persons with the surname Crouch listed in any of these birth records for Scituate, but in theseparate category for births of "Negroes", there is "Mary, negro, daughter of Meriah, May 4, 1708", which would make her about theright age to be the mother of Patience.9. After this disgracefuloccurrence, the Easton's left thechurch. They afterwards purchased a pewin the Baptist church at Stoughton Corner, which excited a great deal ofindignation. Notsucceeding in their attempt to have the bargain cancelled, the people tarred the pew. The next Sunday, the family carried seats inthewagon. The pew was then pulled down; but the family sat in the aisle. These indignities were continued until the separation of thefamily."51. E-mail, Dunkley, Diane [[email protected]], Dear Mr. Fleck:The current museum exhibit is based on a book produced by theNSDAR library and genealogy departments, listing minority patriots state by state. The Massachusetts listing includes JoshuaDunbar, black; and Samuel Dunbar, mulatto. Both names are referenced to Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the RevolutionaryWar, published in Boston 1896-1906 (17 vols.) Joshua was noted as being from Bridgewater & Hingham, and Samuel fromBraintree. Both names are included in our exhibition in a section that lists all the names from the DAR book. Unfortunately, wedon't have anything else that refers to them. As you can imagine, finding portraits of these patriots was quite difficult, and findingobjects connected to a particular person even tougher. Our exhibition will be up through August. I hope you can come and see it. Ifnot, you can purchase a copy of the DAR book African American and American Indian Patriots of the Revolutionary War throughour museum shop.I am sending a copy of this e-mail, and yours, to Eric Grundset, DAR Library director and the editor and one of theauthors of the book.Diane DunkleyDirector, DAR Museum.79. "100 Years of Marriages of Trumbull County 1800-1900" The books were just received by the library late in 1999.One of the Volumes had not even had the binding opened yet. Well even though I knew Noah and Rebecca were probably in thereand that I didn't even have to look, I thought that I would take a glance, just to make sure. I couldn't believe my eyes. Right next tothe record of their marriage was Rebecca's father's consent. I couldn't believe it. All this time I always said I would believe if I onlycould find her and her father's name on the same document. Well I believe. "Joel Downs gives consent."** "But if they were in ahurry to leave that may account for why they didn't sell it or sold it for cheap and that would account for why Noah was so poor andwas buried in the "poor shepherds ground."** "Also, I have Rebecca being born in NY and also Samuel being born in NY. Do youknow where in NY they might have been born? Did I tell you that I made contact with Martha Ann's descendants. Martha Ann wasthe youngest daughter of Noah and Rebecca Dunbar. They have Martha Ann's husband's journal and it has written all of the otherchildrens names and birth dates of Noah and Rebecca and als that Rebecca was born in 1803.
