He appears with his parents in Fairfield Twp., Bureau County, Illinois, in 1900 census as "Willie." Another George William was in New Mexico in 1910, where he married "Grace" Johnson that year. That George was in Tucumcari, NM in 1920.

In 1930, he was in Greenville, Bureau, Illinois, where he was rooming. He was a cashier in a local bank. He was listed as single., So, either Grace died, or that was the wrong George William Johnson in New Mexico, but I doubt it.

In the 1920 Census, George listed his occupation as manager of a pool hall.

P. K. JOHNSON PASSES AWAY

Peter K. Johnson, one of the old citizens of this community died quite suddenly Monday evening at 7:45 o'clock at his home in the southern part of town following a stroke of paralysis which occurred about 11:30 o'clock while he was in the barn hitching up his team. He noticed his hand became numb and remarked to August Janke that he thought he had a stroke. Mr. Janke advised him to go to the house and he managed to get to the porch where he received assistance from members of the household and was put to bed shortly after which he lost consciousness and passed away in the evening.

The funeral services will be held Thursday forenoon at 10 o'clock at the Methodist church. Rev. H. A. Snyder officiating. Interment will be in Whittington cemetery southeast of here.

Peter Klonenberg Johnson was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, sixty-two years ago, Oct. 9, 1849 and came to this country about forty-three years ago, settling first at Sheffield and later moving to Fairfield township south of Tampico residing on the old home place for many years.

Thirty-four years ago Jan. 22, he was married to Mary Howlett at New Bedford and the couple established their home in Fairfield township where they raised their family and lived for years as highly respected citizens. Two years ago they retired from the active duties of farm life and moved to Tampico which has been his home til the time of his death. Mr. Johnson was a good, honest, straight man, square in all his dealings with his fellow men and leaves a record of a good citizen, spendid neighbor and kind father. He was a member of the Tampico Methodist church and was regular in attendance both at church and Sunday school, taking an active interest in the work and living and believing the great truths there taught.

Three sons and two daughters, Ralph at home, Henry on the old farm and Earl of Deer Grove, Misses Lillian and Myrtle both at home and the wife are the surviving members of his family. Two children, a son and a daughter are dead. One brother, Christian D. Johnson of Fairfield and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Jensen of Kansas with two half brothers, James of Iowa and John H. of Fairfield are the surviving relatives. Two half brothers, Rasmus and George and half sister Mary are dead.

Funeral of Peter K. Johnson

The funeral services of the late Peter K. Johnson were held last week Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the Methodist church, Rev. H. A. Snyder, officiating. Mesdames F. A. Brewer and Snyder rendered appropriate songs. There was a profusion of floral tributes and the church was filled with the relatives and friends of the deceased. Six nephews: Wayne, Theo, and Fred Johnson, Herman Thompson, Art Howlett and Frank Heintzleman acted as pall bearers. Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were: James Johnson of Iowa, Mrs. Dorothy Jensen and daughter of Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Emory of Prophetstown, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Howlett of Portland. Interment was in Whittington cemetery.

Gove County Advocate, Aug. 22, 2001Dorothy E. DuBois, daughter of Christian and Martha (Johnson) Larson, was born on Sept. 3, 1911, on the family farm in Phillips Co., KS. She died on Aug. 16, 2001, at the Salina Regional Health Center at the age of 89.

She attended Agra High School and graduated with the class of 1930. She then attended Kansas State University for one year.

On March 6, 1938, she was united in marriage to Howard E. DuBois in Jewell, KS. They became the parents of two sons, Kenneth and Keith. They spent their entire married life on the farm north of Agra. After Howard's death on March 24, 1990. Dorothy continued to live in Agra until a year ago, when she moved to Salina.

Dorothy was a member of the Agra United Methodist Church where she served as pianist for many years. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the EHU. She enjoyed spending time gardening and working with flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband Howard; her parents Christian and Martha Larson; two brothers, George and Wallace Larson; and two sisters, Viola Dennis and Neva Billings.

Survivors include her two sons, Kenneth DuBois and wife Janet of Salina, KS and Keith DuBois and wife Sharon of Quinter, KS; also five grandchildren: Jodi DuBois of Mission, KS, Jill Heidrick and husband Jeff of Olathe, KS, Amy Kroeger and husband Gary of Quinter, KS, Kirk DuBois of Plano, TX, and Mark Johnson of Carrollton, TX; and two great-grandchildren Mitchel and Alise Kroeger of Quinter, KS.


Services were Sat., Aug. 18 at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, KS. Rev. Jack Ropp officiated. Interment was at West Cedar Cemetery in Phillips Co., KS. Arrangements were made by Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.

Notes for Hettie Frances McCRACKEN:Maxine Johnson has a Certified Copy of a Delayed Record of Birth on Hettie, that was issued in 8 December, 1952 by Joseph Mann, County Clerk at Morrison, Ill. Information was gained from the Marriage book to H. Christian Johnson (also in Maxine's possession) and an affidavit of sister, Flore Deitz, from Tampico. Certificate is State File No. 200107. A Bridal Souvenir Book, which is in Maxine's possession, has only a few pages filled out. One is the marriage certificate, signed by Guy L. Zerby, Christian Minister on Wednesday, 24th day of June, 1908. On the facing page is a note in Hettie's handwriting: "H.C. Johnson passed away May 11, 1956." Also inserted is a wedding invitation to the wedding, with envelope addressed in spidery writing to "Miss Tilla Johnson". A pencilled re-address in another hand says: "Christian & Hettie". Several notes out of a pocket address book bear Hettie's handwriting of unknown vintage, but probably after Christian's death: "Sept, 1896, Hettie McCracken began teaching Sunnyside School SW of Tampico. Taught till June, 1901. 5 yrs. went to Dixon college 1 yr, taught music 1 yr, then taught Sunnyside from Sept 1903 to May 27, 1908. Married June 24, 1908. Taught one year in Henry Co. after attending Geneseo Institute, first year of teaching 19 years old. Another note from address book says: Lot # 2236 South-half, July 6, 1954. Ordered a monument $142 Tilla one size 8 x 6 x 14 $45. On the back of that is "I graduate from 8th grade West School, Ida Clark from Prophetstown, teacher 1892 June 11." Another note on another page says: K.S.B. Hospital, Dixon, Ill. Ill Research Hospital, 830 S. Wood St. Chicago. Lizzie went there Aug 24, 1947. She passed away Nov 16, 1948 17 years and 6 months." On reverse in red, as above note" "My first certificate March 7, 1894 in Henry County Geneseo." This is consistent with the originals of the certificates that Maxine has in

Cause of death? need to write for death certificate. Sue recalls that he had heart problems. She also remembers that her grandmother Hettie did all the cooking in the kitchen, except for making the gravy. On holiday dinners, Hettie would call out gently to Christian, "Christian, it's time for the gravy." He would make it in a small quart-size enameled pan, stirring to get all the lumps out as it thickened.

Brace went to Phillips University where he met his wife and married her. He was an outstanding athlete and coached the basketball team for several years while going through college. He also preached at a number of small Christian Churches in the outlying communities. After graduation, he was a minister of the Christian Church until his death, from 1940 til 1983. He is buried beside a golf course in Chiang Mai, Thailand, his last pastorate. He was fondly remembered by his wife, children, and kinfolk as a true gentleman.

In addition to his student pastorates at Jet, he thereafter went to Oklahoma City in about 1942, as an Assistant Pastor under Bill Alexander, an evangelist preacher of the time at one of the larger churches, and thereafter to Altus, Oklahoma in 1945, where he was a founding minister of the congregation there, helping to build the sanctuary (which was destroyed by fire in about 2005). In 1952, he became youth minister under W.A. Welsh, the senior Pastor, at East Dallas Christian Church, then the largest Disciples' congregation. In 1956, he was called to become minister at his home church in Sterling, Illinois, and under his leadership they built a new sanctuary and parsonage north of town. In about 1968, he was called to a church in Charleston, Cole County, Illinois, which he pastored until his retirement.
