our inspiration

The Lake District, Cumbria, where generations of artists, poets and writers have been lured by its beautiful

valleys and dramatic peaks; landscapes that have inspired Ruskin and Wordsworth, the pathways of Wainwright

and the lakes of Swallows & Amazons.

It’s a land that has cradled the discovery of graphite and the development

of pencil making. Over the generations, The Cumberland Pencil Company has

evolved the simple pencil into a range of diverse and innovative products to

suit every kind of artist from aspiring amateur to dedicated professional.

What motivates us today, is not only our surroundings, but also seeing how

our customers create amazing results using our pencils, from simple sketches

to wonderful watercolours; intricate line-work to modern metallic effects.

You too can be inspired today … by using the world’s finest pencils - Derwent.

the world’s finest pencils

our heritageIn Borrowdale, under the roots of an upturned tree,

shepherds first discovered graphite. At first they

used it for marking their sheep

but 300 years later pencil

making in Cumbria

was thriving as a

cottage industry.

The Cumberland Pencil Company created its first

pencil in Keswick in 1832 and the first Derwent fine

art colour pencil was introduced in 1938.

our craftWe have a real passion for the art of pencil making

and it shows in every Derwent range. Each one

has been developed with a real commitment

to creating the perfect fine art pencil. So by

combining traditional pencil making skills, perfected

by generations of craftsmen, with pioneering

manufacturing techniques we are able to provide

a quality and consistency unsurpassed in the art

materials world.

our environmentOur factory is located in one of the most beautiful

parts of England and using pencils is a very natural

art-form, so we are doing all we can to minimise

our impact on the environment. We have reduced

our energy consumption, we recycle our sawdust

Vibrant strokes of ink-like colourThis year sees the Inktense Blocks range extended to

72 colours widening your painting possibilities.

These chunky water-soluble ink blocks will bring a

new sense of freedom and colour to your drawing

and painting. Dry Derwent Inktense delivers pure

vibrant colour but when completely washed out it is

transformed into a translucent ink-like paint which,

when dry, can be worked over.

The blocks are extremely versatile and can be used

for a wide range of creative effects. You can use

them like pans of paint, dip them in water and

apply colour directly to the paper, use dry on their

side or apply directly to wet paper for instant

intense colour.

They can also be used on fabric to create

stunning silk paintings and quilts.

It’s really exciting to work with

Inktense in this format; being able

to work on a larger scale with this

wonderfully versatile product is

extremely inspiring. They are a

complete joy to use; there are so

many creative possibilities that

working with these Inktense blocks is

an adventure every time!

Pencil to ink in just one washPen and ink offers strong, intense colour combined with a translucent effect.

Now you can enjoy these distinctive qualities in an easy to use pencil. Inktense has a highly blendable texture and comes in

a range of jewel-like colours, plus a non-soluble outliner which allows you to draw outlines that are permanent, even when

water is applied. Apply pure, vibrant dry colour then wash the pigment out completely to leave an ink-like effect. Once dry, the

colour is permanent and can be worked over with other media. The possibilities are endless, the results stunning.

Inktense pencils can be used on fabric to create interesting silk paintings and unique quilting projects.

Working with Inktense Pencils is pure

joy. When painting the peacock,

I found the luminescence of the

colours allowed me to build many

glazes of different colours to suggest

the luminosity of the peacock

feathers without the fear of any

colours lifting.

Artbar offers a comprehensive colour range that understands the importance of different tones. Colours are

arranged in 4 different tonal groups: Brights, Pales, Earths and Darks* offering instant access to the colours

available in each tonal range.

Each group has its own symbol for easy reference. This appears on each bar so you can quickly put bars back in

the correct section.

Make your own markWith a beautiful creamy consistency, these

triangular bars of solid, highly pigmented

colour offer the artist so much creative

potential. They feel luxuriously smooth

as they release consistently rich, deep

pigment. The wax based bars are also

completely water-soluble and dry marks

almost seem to melt under your brush.

Used either dry or wet, Artbar opens up a

world of expressive mark making and rich

opaque colour.

Water-soluble wax bars go against everything I was ever taught in my

Chemistry lessons, and they don’t half produce a fantastic result.

I LOVE Artbars! They enable me to produce work that is impossible with

other mediums.

These Watercolour Pencils have a

softer texture and are easier to apply

than their predecessors resulting in

excellent coverage. The entire range

gives rich, deep, creamy, luxuriant

colours which prevail when water is

added. They perform admirably in

all applications...both wet and dry.

Consequently, they have earned a

permanent place beside my drawing

board.

I build up tone and colour with a lot

of cross-hatching and like to work

on fairly smooth surfaces. I like the

individual colours and marks that

I use to be evident in the finished

work and, with these pencils, I feel

I have a great deal of control over

how much colour is put down at any

time. Derwent Artists pencils are

perfect for me - the range of colours

is superb, the barrels are a good size

and very comfortable for sustained

use - especially as my work can take

some time to complete!

Freedom of expression with the ultimate colour rangeThis is the first colour pencil Derwent ever

developed in the 1930s. Its traditional round

barrel and wide core makes it perfect for

broad strokes and free, expressive drawing.

Artists slightly waxy texture is ideal for

multiple layering and blending to produce

an infinite spectrum of subtly different

hues and tints. If you prefer a crisper, more

precise drawing style try our Studio pencil

range which has a slim hexagonal barrel

making it easy to grip. The Studio core is

identical to Artists so they complement

each other perfectly.

The hexagonal shape of Studio

pencils make them easy to hold

for complete control. I was able to

produce thinner lines than with

other Derwent pencils, and even

with a thinner line, Derwent Studio

maintains the same intensity of

colour. The colours in the range blend

together easily and help you reach

any result you can imagine.

Precise, perfect colourIf you like the texture and blendability of

Artists colour pencils, but prefer a crisper,

more precise drawing style, this pencil is

for you. Studio shares the same colour core

as Artists, but is slimmer and the wood barrel

is hexagonal rather than round. The result?

A colour pencil that is easy to grip and

particularly suited to detailed illustration

work, such as botanical studies,

architectural drawing and graphic design.

All these disciplines tend to be

studio-based – hence the name.

I choose Coloursoft pencils for their

quick build up, saturated colour and

their blendibility. Their soft leads

allow me to finish drawings quicker

and with intense results. Usually

I work in more traditional neutral

colours but I wanted to show how

brilliant the colours could be with

Derwent Coloursoft pencils. It was

great fun to let the colours of the

pencils shine.

UK’s softest ever colour pencilThe softest of pencils in a strong and vibrant

range of 72 new Derwent colours. The velvety

softness of the core releases rich, dense colour

at a stroke and is perfect for mixing and

blending. Despite its soft texture, Coloursoft

sharpens to a fine point and works equally

well for detailed illustrations or bold,

contemporary still-life drawings

and portraiture.

Derwent Pastel Pencils are certainly

the finest I have tried; they are

absolutely the best compromise

between softness and strength which

allows for very detailed drawings

and at the same time, soft gradients

and layering of colours that you can

hardly achieve with other

pastel pencils.

Pastel beauty, pencil controlNothing beats the colourful brilliance of pastels

but they’re not always the cleanest medium to

use. Now you can enjoy all the beauty of pastel

in a convenient, less messy form. These wood

cased Pastel Pencils have a soft, powdery

texture which produces a velvety smooth

finish, ideal for mixing and blending.

And because they’re pencils, they’re clean

and easy to control – although you may not

be able to resist the occasional smudge

with your finger!

Pastel pencils are extremely popular for

portrait work, so we have put together

a tin of 12 pencils especially for creating

portraits. The Pastel pencils Skintones set

is ideal for drawing people.

Bold, broad colour at a strokeFor authentic pastel drawings with quick, easy colour lay down,

these chunky pastel blocks are perfect. Their square shape and

smooth, semi hard texture means you can use the ends, sides

or edges to produce both broad and fine lines. Although not

as powdery as soft pastels, the effect is equally beautiful and

the unique colourless Derwent Blending White allows you to

blend the colours easily without affecting their density.

Fine Art Eco PencilsThe new Derwent Fine Art eco Sketching Pencil, with its

high quality artist-grade graphite, a naturally occurring

substance sourced from Sri Lanka.

Love drawing

These high quality graphite pencils are the perfect selection for

Derwent cares about trees; we use wood from sustainable

forests that are accredited to the Sustainable Forest Initiative

(SFI).

Love the planet

We work hard to protect the environment, developing an eco

As a result of our environmental commitment we were

Black graphite pencils ideal for dark sketchesDerwent Onyx is made from smooth, dark graphite and

delivers dense, rich, jet- black tones, darker than a Graphic

capable of sharpening and holding a fine point. This makes it

equally good for quick expressive sketches, as well as detailed

technical and architectural drawings. Darker shades can be

built up by applying increased pressure. For lighter, more

detailed artwork apply less pressure. Available in two tones,

Paper surface

Developed especially for water-soluble pencils,

this smooth paper is perfect for all water-soluble

media including Inktense Blocks and Artbar. The

smooth surface also provides an excellent base

for detailed watercolours and dry pencil work.

The most important aspect of the development of our new watercolour paper

was to create a surface that welcomes both pencils and water.

A rough surface is not suitable for pencil work as the texture of the paper

interferes with the drawing. The areas of rough texture will leave a white mark

which means it takes a lot more effort to cover the paper.

Pencils need a smooth surface with the perfect amount of tooth in the surface

to pick up the pigment from the pencil as it glides over the smooth surface

with ease.

Painting PencilsOne of the most exciting developments

in art has been the introduction of

water-soluble colour pencils – and

our Lakeland version was one of the

first. Lakeland Painting can be used

dry just like normal colour pencils, but

brush over your drawing with a wetted

paintbrush and it magically turns into

a painting.

Lakeland pencils have been firm

favourites with generations of children

and it’s easy to see why. They combine

consistently high quality with excellent

value for money, and there’s a great

choice of products too! From chunky,

easy grip pencils for toddlers to ultra

slim colour pencils for detailed work,

Lakeland is the brand to trust.

Graphite PencilsSketching is one of the simplest but

most enjoyable pastimes for children

of all ages. Lakeland Graphite provides

Colouring PencilsOne of the earliest pleasures in life is colouring, whether

you’re creating your own works of art or simply using a

colouring book.

There are three pencil sizes to choose from; Lakeland

Colouring is a traditional, round colour pencil with

a smooth 3.3mm colour core that can be mixed and

blended to create a rainbow of different hues. Lakeland

Colourthin is ideal for older children. It has a slim

hexagonal barrel and slightly thinner core than Lakeland

Colouring, making it perfect for more detailed work.

And for the little ones, Lakeland Jumbo’s 11mm diameter

barrel is specially designed for small hands to grip.
