Flower PowerClaude Bennett, Ontario's minister of industry and tourism, received, on

behalf of the government, 12 "Trillium Awards" from the Ontario Division ofInternational Nickel at a recent luncheon in Copper Cliff's Nickel Park.

The awards are stylized Trillium flowers, fabricated from nickel stainlesssteel, mounted on a base of polished nickel-copper ore. The nickel in thestainless steel was mined, milled, smelted and refined in Ontario by Inco,while the ore for the base came from Inco's Sudbury district mines.

The "Trillium Award" is given annually by the ministry to industries inOntario that have gained local and international recognition for design,production and marketing of Ontario-made products.

Located adjacent to the converter aisle in theCopper Clift smelter complex, lnco's casting andcooling operation is another step in a seriesthat progressively raises the grade of our nickeland copper products.

Casting and CoolingA view of the 270 moulds on the casting and cooling building at the Copper Cliff smelter. Molten matte, delivered by transfer car from thenickel converter building, is allowed to cool slowly for several days under insulated steel hoods, forming crystals of copper and nickelsulphide.

As the name implies, casting and coo-ling is simply that - molten matte fromthe nickel converters is poured, or cast,into refractory-lined moulds where it'sallowed to cool at a controlled rate. It'sthen broken into smaller chunks and issent to matte processing.

But let's start at the beginning.

Molten matte is poured from the nickelconverters into 25-ton ladles anddelivered by transfer cars to the castingand cooling building. At this point, thematte is essentially a melt of metallicsand concentrates of nickel and coppersulphides at a temperature of approxi-mately 982° C. It's picked up by an over-head crane and poured into refractory-lined moulds which are then covered withinsulated steel hoods that promote slowcooling. Each mould is rectangular inshape, twelve feet long, eight feet wide,and two feet deep with sloping sides.

The key to the whole process is thecontrolled slow cooling of the matte ingotIt requires three days for the ingot to cooldown to about 482° C., at which time thecover is removed, and the ingot isallowed to cool for another day to about204° C., when it's lifted out of the mould.

Slow cooling allows the matte to formcrystals of nickel and copper sulphide.The three-day period allows largercrystals to form and also causes morecomplete separation. If the coolingwas rapid, small crystals wouldresult and they would be very difficultto separate in the later stages of theprocess. Another characteristic of theslow-cooled matte is its marked tendencyto fracture as separate pieces rather thansplit pieces.

When the 25-ton ingots are sufficientlycool, they're lifted from the mould and

Casting building operator, Paul Muise, directs the crane as it raises a cooled ingot from itsmould. The ingot is taken to another area in the building to be broken and crushed for furtherprocessing.

There you have it - the casting andcooung operation, one of the vitallyimportant steps in the production ofnickel and copper.

Society's 1975 Awards of Excellencecompetition was particularly kind to theOntario Division of International Nickel.

One award of excellence and twohonourable mentions were won by theDivision's public affairs department,with one of the honourable mentionsgoing to "the triangle'. Entries from allacross Canada were judged for content,layout, writing, picture quality andpresentation, with one winner and threehonourable mentions being named.

The winning entrant was a monthlymagazine prepared by Bell Telephone.

The public affairs department receivedits award of excellence for "InstitutionalTelevision Spots" Included in that awardwere submissions concerning the Divi-sion's television presentations on CKNCTelevision and CKSO Television duringthe past year. The award given to thecompany with the top "InstitutionalProgramming" is a credit to the produc-tion and imaginative capabilities of thetelevision stations in Sudbury.

The second honourable mention won bythe Division was for rado advertising inSudbury and in the Niagara Peninsulasurrounding Port Colborne, Here theefforts of Sudbury station CKSO-AM

"Your standard of living is great; yourlakes and forests and streams are lovely,and your girrs are certainly not stand-offish, But your fish-and-chips and yourbeer! They leave an awful lot to bedesired."

Those are candid comments by22-year-old Steve Cooper, a native sonof Wales and an exchange student,recently employed with Inco's construc-tion field force at the Copper Cliff smelter.

"Canada is BIG!" he exclaimed, "andI mean really BIG. If you didn't drive onthe wrong side of the road, I think Icould really get to like it here."

At the end of the first year of a three-year computer and control systemscourse at Lanchester Polytechnic inRugby, Warwickshire, Steve figured he'dlike to spend a working holiday inCanada, so he applied to the InternationalAssociation for the Exchange of Studentsfor Technical Experience (IAESTE). Theymade the arrangements with Inco.

Following a five-day safety andorientation course, he went to work asan electrician's helper. "The work isgreat, and I couldn't have worked with afriendlier or more helpful bunch of fel-lows", said Steve, "but your weather -it's hot!"

Harping back to the beer bit, Steve gotto comparing Canadian and British pubs.

I miss the certain kind of atmospherethat we have over 'ome. It's differenthere. Maybe it's because there are morewomen in Canadian pubs. In Wales, wemen like to drink alone and sing - that'sanother thing I miss, a real roof-raisingsing-song."

Steve was with Inco until the end ofAugust, and he's currently spending amonth or so taking a rook at other partsof Canada.

Good luck, Steve, wherever you are.If you make the west coast, you may evenget to like Canadian fish-and-chips.They make 'em old country style there.

You've heard of surveyors on surface,but did you know that there are surveyorsunderground also? It's a fact, Inco hasapproximately ninety underground sur-veyors throughout its Ontario Divisionmining operations.

Stobie number seven shaft is where'the triangle' talked with a typical surveyparty and followed them in action Thesurvey crew, headed by party leaderCharlie De Rusha, included surveyorsBob Blaney and Osmo Koski. All arequalified surveyors and all are with themines engineering department.

Charlie, Bob and Osmo are responsiblefor conducting all types of undergroundand surface surveys that relate to minedevelopment. In addition, they providean ore production control function andassist the geology department incalculating ore reserves.

They spend roughly half theft timeunderground and the other half on sur-face in the engineering office calculating,recording, and preparing mine plans.They have to know the complete layoutof the mine, right down to every explora-tion diamond drill hole. 'This isextremely important from a safety stand-point, especially when an area is to beblasted,' said Charlie. 'You see, eachdiamond drill hole is similar to a riflebarrel and 'shoots" out loose materialduring an adjacent blast that could causeserious injuries if men were in the vicinity.Its our job to make the mine foremanaware of the locaUon of all diamonddrill holes."

The same thing applies to raise boreholes, A new drift may not be drivenany closer than 30 feet from a raise borehole, and this can only be accomplishedby knowing the exact location of each

raise bore hole in each drift.

Perhaps the surveying activity that mostminers are familiar with is incentivesadministration. It's the surveyors jobto determine the advance in drifts, andthe amount of muck' produced fromstopes. Using this information, theamount of bonus is calculated.

Underground surveyors must alsoensure that drift and developmentheadings stay on line and on grade. Thedirection, or line, is determined by usinga series of fixed survey markers spacedat regular intervals along the back -mining term for "roof" - of each drift.By taking a line on these markers, usinga plumb bob, it's possible to determinethe exact direction.

Grade is important for proper waterdrainage. The surveyors provide gradepoints as specified in the mine plans.Using these, the miners stretch twostrings at a determined height a shortdistance apart. The strings will appearto become one when viewed at a par-ticular angle. It's this angle that is thecorrect grade.

The most graphic example of survey-ing skill occurs when two drifts, beingdriven from different directions, meet.This happened between Frood andStobie mines on the 600, 1,000, 1,400,and 2,400 levels. It's at these levelsthat the two mines are joined.

Just take a minute and consider what'shappened. Two drifts, started at differentlocations, are driven toward each otherthrough some of the hardest rock in theworld, and they actually meet. This couldonly be accomplished by extremelyaccurate survey work and skilled drillingcrews. That's teamwork, and that's reallywhat it's all about - men workingtogether to accomplish a common end.

Ahhh, the good old days! Days ofknee-pants and pigtails!

You and the gang used to raid pin-cherry trees, suffering the indignation of Ediblean occasional stomach-ache.

You spent hours picking dandelions,plucking off the bright yellow flowersand making chains out of the stems.

You scouted for cattails, blowing andshaking all the fluff loose, scatteringit to the wind.

PlantsIt was all great fun.But then you grew up. And in the

process, you somehow lost your tastefor pincherries. Dandelions becamea nuisance, a threat to your garden.And cattails just didn't have their oldappeal.

Well, get ready, 'cause the good olddays are back again, THIS time with aflavourful difference!

Dandelion wine! Pincherry jelly!Cattail chowder! Dozens of unusual andunique recipes! By learning to recognizesome of the local wild plants, you'll notonly gain survival-in-the-woods know-ledge, but you'll also hit on some realgourmet-type delicacies . . . zestiersalads, nippy jellies, tangier tea, andeven a robust wine - or two!

We "leafed" through "The Conserva-tionist" - a publication of the NickelDistrict Conservation Authority - and"dug up" some little goodies you mightenjoy

For instance, there's a shrub calledLabrador Tea that's fairly common inmarshy areas nd can be distinguishedby the rusty hairs on the back of itsleaves; just a few of these leaves, addedto a regular brew, will give your tea extraflavour and a heady aroma.

The cattail - bullrush - is also amarsh plant and can grow to a height ofnine feet at maturity. Its easily recognizedby its broad, erect, bladelike leaves andstiff stem topped by a sausage-likebrown flower head, The rootstock at thebase of the stem is best collected duringthe dormant spring and fall seasons, andis edible either raw or cooked; in fact,the pithy core at the junction of the root-

stock and the sprouting stem is said totaste like tapioca when eaten roasted orboiled. And the young flowering spikescan be steamed or boiled, and apparentlyhave a flavour and consistency similarto olives and French artichokes,

And you mustve heard of fiddleheadgreens; although we don't have the trueFiddlehead of New Brunswick - theOstrich Fern we do have somethingthat's quite similar ,.. bracken, with itsnew leaves gracefully unfolding in theform of a fiddlehead, can be cooked like

asparagus. The slightly three-forked fernshould be collected when it's six to eightnches high, then boiled or steamed forhalf an hour, seasoned with salt andpepper, and dressed with butter. Theysay it's really quite tasty.

Another favourite is the Arrowhead,known as Wapato by north-westernIndians. Its potato-like tubers are pro-

duced just about this time of year a theends of long subterranean runners, sothey're not always easy to find. But likepotatoes, these tubers can be boiled orroasted, then seasoned to taste.

Getting into wild fruits, probably thebest known of all is the wild strawberry;in fact, some people say it tastes betterthan the cultivated kind. If youve got thetime and the patience to pick them,they're delicious either fresh orpreserved.

The tart flavour of the wild raspberrytakes some getting used to, and, madeinto jam, the seeds can prove trouble-some. In Europe, raspberry leaf tea hasbeen used as an herbal remedy.

Need we mention blueberries? Greatwith a dollop of cream, a sprinkling ofsugar, inside a pie crust, even in a lug!

The Wild Rose is fairly prominent in theSudbury area, and produces a fruit knownas a rose hip, which is rich in vitamin C.It's actually a multiple fruit; the red fleshypart - the receptacle - contains anumber of hairy seeds which are the truefruits, but they're a nuisance whethereaten raw or made into wine, jam, or jelly.In winter, the rose hips can sometimes beseen dry on the twigs and make a goodemergency food.

The fruit of the pincherry, borne singlyon long stalks, is very sour, but can beeaten raw or made into a jelfy. Lesscommon in our area is the choke cherry,which forms in grape-like clusters. Eat'em raw, and your mouth's sure to pucker.but a delicious jelly can be made bycombining equal portions of chokecherry juice and app!e juice, with a touchof pectin.

And then there are trees. The innerbark of most of our trees can be used asan emergency food, while some can betapped for their sap.

We could go on and on, but you'regetting the general idea by now. What itall "boils down" to, is . there's a wholewild supermarket out there, lust waitingfor you. And the best part is . . theprice is right!

At Garson mine, an average of 790000qaflons of water are pumped from under-ground to surface every day. The sourceof this amount can be accounted for asfollows: 360000 gallons come from themine's sandf ill process: 260000 gallonsfrom drilling operations and drinkingwater, while 1 70000 gallons are attribu-ted to natural seepage. All of this waterenters the mine, and all of it is pumpedto surface every day, so you see, itsno small matter.

Lets have a look at the water systemand see how it works.

Mines are designed in such a waythat all the main drifts slope slightlytoward the mine shaft, which means thatany water in the mine will eventuallydrain toward the shaft by gravity. Butit wont enter the shaft because thereare drain holes that intercept the waterand direct it to the main mine settlingsumps, the first stage of water treatment.In the case of Garson, they are locatedon the 1 000, 3000 nd 4000 levelpumping horizons. Settled sludge ispumped to two belt-filters where it isdewatered and then introduced into the

it needs, depending on how much sand-fill is required. In any case, only theexcess water not used in the sandfillplant need be treated.

When water enters the treatment plant,a hydrated lime slurry will be addedto control acidity. Of course, if the wateris already of the proper quality, then thelime wont be needed. The acidity of thewater is important because only at acertain acid level will the heavy metalsin the water precipitate out.

At the pumping horizons, powerfulpumps transport the ciarified water tosurface where it is collected in a largeholding tank. From here, after the systemhas been revised, the water will go in twodirections; either to the sandfill plant,where it will be recirculated back intothe mine, or to the new mine waterclarification plant. The beauty of thissystem is that the sand plant operationcan use as much, or as little water as

GARSON MINESWATER SYSTEM

A polymer compound will be addednext. A polymer is nothing more thana chemical compound that looks likebranches of a tree under a microscope.It acts like a magnet and attracts anysmall particles in the water. Theseparticles, including the heavy metals,adhere to the polymer, forming "flocs".These "flocs" will sink to the bottom ofthe tank and form a sludge.

While all this is happening, the wholemixture will be mechanically agitated ina reaction chamber to ensure that all thesmall particles will be brought intocontact with the polymers.

Clear water will be left after the sludgesettles and this water will then be allowedto enter the environment. The sludgewill be pumped into one of four holdingcompounds which are excavations in theground with dikes around the edges.

In the holding compounds, water willbe allowed to escape from the sludgeby a process of natural evaporation,leaving a dried sludge behind. Thissludge will then be mechanically removedby a frontend loader and taken to alicensed disposal area within the Garsonsandfill pit where it will be dumped.

So there you have it, a simplifiedversion of the proposed Garson minewater clarification plant.

The Iron Ore Recovery Plant and theCopper Cliff copper refinery feature in thismonths suggestion plan report. All told, atotal of 76 bright ideas earned $4750 for theboys who donned their thinking caps.

Leading the pack by a great many laps,Edwin Lang, copper refinery, received acheque for $1 520 for his proposal tofabricate a base plate mother mould withfour removable sides.

Peter Marlin, copper refinery, clicked for$685 for his suggestion that tie plates bewelded between Bosch conveyor linkhalves to eliminate spreading.

Amedeo Rebeilato, copper refinery,solved a Square "D' switch handle problemby proposing the use of screw-type rivets,and earned himself $280.

At the I.O.R.P., Stan Savarie wasawarded $230 for his idea to install a jumperline between the number seven kettle andthe second stage nickel thickener overflow.

A knowledge of wood earned MedLosier, copper refinery, $165. He knew thatfilter press plates fabricated from spruceinstead of fir would last longer.

Also at tbe copper refinery, Gabor Sebokpocketed $125 for suggesting modificationsto water-cooling launders.

Another successful copper refinerysuggester, Richard Gagnon collected $100for his thoughts on substituting a six-inchpipe for a three-inch washbox.

There were two $75 awards. One went toPaul Bouchard, copper refinery, whosuggested removing the return magazineconveyor and installing a catwalk. Thesecond was split between the copperrefinery's Herb Grubber and HarryStevenson. They proposed a catwalk at thecarbon dioxide reboilers,

The lone $60 went to AntonioFragomeni, copper refinery, who saw theneed for a parts washing tray in the shops.

Four l.O.R.P. suggesters earned $50awards. Sisco Alberton saw the advantageof using double-edged baghouse bags;Stan Germs proposed using hose clampsfor Eimco filter panels; Stan Savariesuggested revisions to the second stagenickel underflow line, and Ernest Schraderfigured out the routing of a by-pass line foriron filters.

A $45 windfall was collected by DonLebianc for devising a method that wouldpermit billets to advance automatically on atransfer conveyor.

Five cheques for $35 were distributed.One went to Joe Korosli, copper refinery,

for an idea to install skids on scrap stands;another went to Jack Mikkoia, l.O.R,P., forhis suggestion to install a recorder-controller on the carbon dioxide stripper;another to Robert Paradis, copper refinery,for proposing cooling coils for anodeboilers; and another to Adaibert Theil whosaw the need for a shut-off switch for thenumber one substation air conditioning unitbefore he left the copper refinery for theCopper Cliff smelter. The fifth $35 chequewent into the wallet of Leo Vincent, copperrefinery, who, for safety's sake,suggested an extension to the number threewirebar casting wheel track.

All seven $30 awards went to copperrefinery personnel. Real Bergeron earnedhis cheque by suggesting that the operationof an inspection turn-over fixture would beimproved by the addition of a welded steelbar. Honoraid Charron indicated that theinstallation of an exhaust fan in the plateshop would improve conditions. FreddyFrey figured out a more practical way to

service roof heaters. TheodoreKaczkowski suggested casting a concretecurb on the truck loading ramp. PhilippeLussier thought it would be an improvementif the stripper surge tank's rubber hose wasreplaced with a lead line. GordonMcCandiess proposed that the installationof automatic twist-lock buttons oninspection tables would improve efficiency,and Donald Morrison came up with theidea to hinge mould table top plates.

Five of this month's eight $25 awardswere captured by I,O.R.P. people. PatAlbert saw the need for a man door near theplant's door 88. Lionel Benharn thought itwould be a good idea to install an eyewaShfountain adjacent to the iron filters. FraserDunlop suggested the placement of twosolenoid valves in the Spectrovac airconditioning duct. Stan Jones, with an eyeto safety, proposed an extension of guardplates under "C" crane trolley wires, whileErnest Schrader figured iron filters neededstop alarms.

The copper refinery's three $25 chequeswent to Gregory Gigiiotti, ConradLaferriere and Cieova Lemieux. Gregorysuggested agitator covers be cut into twosections and hinged. Conrad proposed asign be erected to identify a pedestriancrosswalk, and Cleova devised a swivelhook to improve piling stand operations.

Distribution of sixteen $20 cheques wasnearly even between the two plants;however, the lO,RP. took one more thanhalf for a total of nine. They went to the teamof Ken Bassett, Lionel Benham andErnest Schrader who put their headstogether and came up with the unanimousdecision that there should be a serviceplatform for filter recirculating valves, toLeeiand Blois and Johannes Goedhardwho jointly agreed that a vacuum line drainvalve needed a service platform; to BruceKiiiah who saw the need for a safety chainat the head of a crane access stairway; toJoe Kohan and Roger Lasci who split thecash after locating storage space for a

forklift truck; to Fred MacDonneli whoproposed a platform extension at thenumber two exhaust fan; to SergioMacineiii who dreamed up a hookingarrangement for Lurgi seal flappers; to JimSammon for suggesting the installation of aby-pass valve in the the automatic dryerinstrument air line; to Ernest Schrader for aproposal to erect guardrails around ball milldischarge boxes, and to Keith Vincent andTom Hodgins who got together andsubmitted the idea that a ladder on top of thenumber one "B" kettle would improveaccess.

The copper refinery's seven $20 awardswent to: Joe Koroscii who, for the sake ofsafety, suggested the railings around the oldslimes pit be plated; to Howard Larrett whoproposed the installation of a permanent lineto the north-east surge tank; to Eddy Martintwice - firstly for his thoughts on a guideplate application on the sheet preparationmachine, and secondly for his observationthat the wooden stand on the sheet

preparation machine should be replacedwith a more practical steel stand; to JimRouselle who decided it would be a goodidea to relocate the first aid stretcher in theanode storage area; to Stan Srogor who feltthat a guard was required on the rodpolisher, and to Clement Vachon whosuggested that if a tie bar was removed fromthe top of the pressure tank then a moreacceptable plug position would be obtained.

On to the $15 awards. There were seven,with two going to the copper refinery whereEddy Martin clicked for his third chequethis month by pointing out that a covershould be fabricated for the sheetpreparation machine brake disc, andClement Vachon earned second mentionon these pages for devising a hook for scrapbox dumping.

Randy Pawson hastwo pairs of hands.One pair for brushesand charcoal-and one pair forhammers andwrenches.

An apprentice diesel mechanic and atalented artist - in the case of RandyPawson, they're one and the same.

Randy's an apprentice diesel mechanicat Copper Cliff South mine and he's alsoan artist in his own right.

He produces most of the illustrationsused in South mine's newspaper, "On theLevel", and, as a first-time effort for "thetriangle", created the attractive blackand white sketch that graces the frontcover of this issue.

Randy's not only an illustrator, healso enjoys doing abstracts and sur-realism in a variety of mediums, fromcharcoal to wood sculpture. He's alsoa real "student of the arts" as can beverified by his collection of art bookscontaining works of the old masters.

Randy calls Copper Cliff his home. Ashe puts it, "I've lived in Copper Cliff mostof my life, but was born in Montreal andspent the first six months of my life there.Just enough so that I can't say I'm aCopper Cliff native."

While attending Copper Cliff HighSchool, Randy developed a real interestin things artistic, but transferred toSheridan Technical School, (now SudburySecondary School) in order to take anart course. At that time, Copper Cliff Highdidnt offer an art course.

During his time at Sheridan Tech,Randy began assembling a portfolio ofhis work and also met his wife-to-be,Darlene Skraba, They were married whenhe graduated and moved to Toronto tospend what Randy cafls, "one of themost frustrating years of my life."

'1 went to Toronto to try and breakinto the wor'd of commercia' art. I got ajob at Goodyear and spent al my sparetime knocking on doors trying to get ajob as a commercial artist," says Randy.

Artisan"I can remember making the roundsalong Church Street where most of thecommercial art establishments werelocated. They all seemed to have littlegrey-haired ladies as receptionists, whowere a'ways very nice to me anddtHgently took my name and address. Butyou know what? I never heard from anyof them."

After a year of this, Randy had to makea choice. Stay in Toronto and starve inthe hope that he might get a job, or return

to Copper Cliff. To him the choice wasc'ear. He returned to Copper Cliff andwas subsequently hired by InternationalNickel. Now he fee's that he has the bestof both worlds.

'1 can continue my art at home andIm learning a trade at the same timewith my job at Inco,' Randy says.

But Randys first love will always beart. You just have to hear him ta'k torealize that it's in his brood - almosta compu'sion - he has to do it,

Lucien Trepanier, carver par excellence and a boxman at thePort Co/borne nickel refinery.

A sharp knife and a good clean piece ofbasswood - that's haopiness.

In a shady nook at Bissel's Hideaway near Port Co/borne on the Niagara Peninsula - Lucienwith his Chevy van home for the summer months.

Many people have an instinctive desireto carve. In the case of Lucien Trepanier,a boxman at the Port Colborne nickelrefinery, it started way back in his schooldays, at Thetford Mines in Quebec, whenhe carved his initials on the school desk.During woodworking casses, he beganlearning to work with wood.

He never lost his desire to shapesomething from a piece of wood, and, in1962, he took up wood carving as anenjoyable pastime. Being a confirmedbachelor with plenty of leisure time on hishands, it became an absorbing hobbyand has developed into a profitablesideline with over 500 carvings on thecredit side of the ledger.

While some people may think of woodcarving as only a form of amusement,Lucien sees it as a skilled craft.

Lucien recalls, "I started with a pocketknife and an oil stone but as I becamemore proficient, began making my owntools, such as chisels, gouges, veinersand fluters. As I progressed to largerprojects, a work bench, vice and band-saw were desirable and helpful. Havingthis essential equipment and a softbasswood block, cut to a contour roughlyresembling the outline, the carver isready to begin. Lucien suggests thatbasswood be used for carvings as itsrelatively inexpensive and easilyobtained.

In the beginning, the question isusually, What shall I make? Lucienrecommends that if a person has nevercarved before, and knows little or nothingabout achieving proper form and contour,he should first attempt only the simplestsubjects. Hes found that his greatest

challenge has come from custom orders,especially carvings of birds.

Lucien moved to Port Colborne in 1949on the advice of his brother, Denis, whowas working for Inco. Followingconstruction work during the buildingof the Port Colborne General Hospital,he started at the Port Colborne nickelrefinery in 1950. All of his service hasbeen spent in the tankhouse of theelectronickel refinery, and hes justifiablyproud of joining, this fall, that selectgroup already in the Quarter CenturyClub.

During the summer months, Lucienpacks up his camper, a converted 1962Chevy van, and can be found at variouscampsites throughout the Niagara area.Last May he set up camp at Bissel'sHideway and expects to stay put untilwell into October.

Some of the more than 500 carvings that have taken shape in Luc/en's talented hands since he began to whittle away in 1962. Most of hispieces are shaped from basswood, but he uses mahogany for making chains.

Do-it-yourself TV

Six years ago, Vince Vienneau, an electrician at Creighton mine and a Creightonemployee for 24 years, built himself a tube-type Heathkit television set from scratch.Colour, no less, with a 19-inch screen and a remote control unit. At a cost of about$600. Not to mention the 80 or so hours of labour.

While the whole family pitched in, Vince's main source of help came from sonLeo, a surveyor with the engineering department at Copper Cliff North mine.

And just this spring, a second colour set came into being - a wedding gift forLeo and his bride, Beverley. Vince was going to buy the couple a TV, but instead,father and son decided to build another Heath kit. Much more fun, and a lot oftogetherness. This time, Leo did most of the work, with his dad lending the expertisewhen needed. The set's a 21-inch colour model; it took a month to build - about150 hours - and is transistorized, with snao-in modules. There's a convergencepanel up front, and a remote control unit for on/off, volume, channel selection, colourcontrol, and tint control. Not bad, eh? Total cost? Over $1,lOOl

Now that might sound a bit much, but it's custom crafted, and never, never willa repair man have to be called in for either set. Because both have test meters,built-in test equipment, and a repair manual. And of course, there's that certain pridein knowing you've built your own colour set, which is kind of a unique thing to do.

Vince's interest in building things electrical started back in '49, when he got hislicense as a ham radio operator. That was the beginning. His basement is now halfrec room and half workshop, complete with receivers, transmitters, teletype machines,and such, Being fully conversant with radio technology, it was only natural to turnto television.

Next venture? Says Leo, "we'd kind of like to try stereo . . , that'd beinteresting

Just as interesting was his comment that "we really don't watch all that muchtelevision!"

On the annversary of his 40th year as bandmaster for the ConistonConcert Band, Inco pensioner, Dan Totino, vividly reca'ls

the time we played in Mindemoya. We got lost on the way anddrove all night. We finally got there around nine in the morning, and wehad to play at eleven! We held concerts at three and six o'clock, and atnine that night, we played as a dance band til one am., then jumped in thebus and headed back'..."

the time we played for the king and queen (Elizabeth andGeorge VI) when they came to Sudbury. We were dressed as Britishguards, our uniforms were really sharp. That was in. . . let's see, now

.oh, yes, 1939!..."Dan was playing trumpet at the Royal York in Toronto when he

decided to return home to Coniston and help organize the local band.I remember back in '35, when they asked me to take on the

band, there were only five or six members. Today, we have a 25-membersenior band and a 15-member junior band. And enough instruments for a52-piece orchestra! .

Forty years with the band, and 38 with Inco, maestro Dan retired fromthe warehouse at Copper Cliff South mine in 1973. And what does he dowith his spare time?

Well, I write some music when I'm tired of working in the garden,I prepare music lessons for the kids, and then there's always bandpractice .

Keep it up, Dan, you've done Coniston proud!

Like a few tips on tipping - and you'lljust have to face it, tipping's IN, no matterwhere you go. And ladies, if you're goingon your own or with a couple of girl-friends, be prepared - women areexpected to tip in the same manner as thefellas! Just to give you an idea of what'sacceptable . . . hotels and restaurantsusually add 10 to 15 per cent to thetotal bill for "service", in which case,you're not expected to tip: if it's beenleft to your own-discretion, 15 per centwill make you a welcome return guest!And taxi drivers everywhere get 20per cent, otherwise YOU get a dirty lookand a spatter of mud when he "floors" it!

Packing? What can we say! It's alwaysa bit of a hassle, no matter what ANY-BODY says! Hopefully, your suitcasesare lightweight: flights outside NorthAmerica, including Bermuda and theCaribbean, allow 44 pounds (20 kilos) ofluggage, economy class, and 66 pounds(30 kilos) first class. Excess baggage ischarged, so DON'T overpack! Remember,you'll be wanting to buy things whileyou're away, and you'll need room in yourluggage

Now then. Accommodation. Wherewill you stay. . and why? Becausehotel rates differ according to what'sincluded, it's a must to know that"American Plan" means that the hotel ratequoted covers your room plus threemeals a day: "Modified American Plan"covers your room plus two meals, usuallybreakfast and dinner: "European Plan"means that the rate covers your roomonly . . . very common here in NorthAmerica; however, in Europe, most hotelrates include a Continental breakfastcoffee and toast or roll. And while NorthAmerican hotels almost always include aprivate bath with each room, manyEuropean hotels provide a sink only. Insome smaller hotels, a room with bathmay have a bathtub, but no toiletwise to check beforehand!

Jet lag, that peculiar feeling of dis-orientation that comes from crossing anumber of time zones, can really affectyou, both physically and psychologically.Once you've "arrived", it's wise to restup before getting on with sightseeingand shopping. And be careful of new,exotic foods . . . you can have your cake

before leaving, as proof that it wasn'tpurchased abroad, for which you'd haveto pay duty.

Shopping away from home is alwaysfun, but DON'T spend the whole bundlebefore you see everything that's offered.Most countries have specialties that areusually quite reasonably priced: Franceis known for its perfume, antiques,gloves, jewellery and fashions: inEngland, you'll love the fabulous bargainson woollens, tweeds, glassware andchina, while the Caribbean has terrificstraw goods, madras, and pottery.Remember that sizes and figure typesare different in other countries: a perfectsize 10 becomes a 38 in Europe, andyour size seven shoe is a 39 in Franceand a 38 in Italy. Best to try, before youbuy!

There are SO many things to considerbut really, that's half the fun! We've

touched on a few, just to start you off.The most important thing is . . . have oneheck of a good time and, before youleave, be sure your house or apartmentis well looked after in your absence.

The best news of the summer seasonat Sudbury Downs was on August 9, whenall sorts of records were shattered duringthe second running of the Nickel Plate.

This classic for trotters was the featureof a ten-race card. The purse of $16000attracted the very best in the harnesscircuit for the one-night stand.

Handicappers were faced with an ex-

ceptionally close field, with two of the sixin the race having bested a two-minutemile, but not over the classy Sudburytrack. The early line on the race singledout two of the six paces; Mounty Hano-ver' who paced the mile in 1.59 and fourin mid-July and Royal Charm N, theonly mare in the event, who also pacedin less than two minutes on July 12.

Hanover' made a move in the stretchbut the race for the money was alwaysin the hands of Harold Stead.

Two other records that went into thebooks at this year's Nickel Plate classicwere totals for the ten-race card at thepari-mutuel windows. The new recordwas of more than $144000, parlayed by arecord crowd of just under 4,000 fans.

Saturday, August 9, was the date thisyear, and a fine day it was too. TheIdylwylde Golf and Country Club wasthe setting as usual and two draws,at 7:30 am. and 1:30 p.m. with shotgunstarts, were required to accommodatethe entries.

There was good golf, some really greatshots, plenty of average scores, andmany interesting situations for theless devoted. Scores ranged from triplebogies to Roy Maud's eagle three onthe par-five tenth hole; most everyoneappeared to have a great day despitethe rather lengthy playing time required.

A winners' dinner and prize presenta-tion was held on the following Wednes-day, August 13, at the Copper Cliff Club.In addition to the regular event winners,the four low gross players were CopperCliff's entry in the President's trophy event

that was held at Thompson, Manitoba, onSaturday, August 16. The Thompson hostteam was the winner of this event. TheCopper Cliff foursome tied for secondplace with the Port Colborne entry whilethe Toronto team came third.

The Copper Cliff foursome was SteveCote, 77, Don Peloquin, 78, Joe Sharpe,79 and Bill Vickman, 80. Other winnerswere: low gross team - Steve Cote, LeoChasse, Ted Flanagan, and John Specwith a 325 team total. Runner-up was thequartet of Leo Hayes, Hurly Hreljac, BrianCrowder, and Graham Squirell.

Low net team winner in the morningdraw included Joe Sharpe, Henry Lewan-doski, Jack Newell, and Jack Turnbull, withCharlie McCoy, Robert Polano, NormCarriere and Doug Bonden as runner-up.In the afternoon draw, the low net winningteam included Bill Buchanan, Roy Maud,Don Ripley, and Ken Manner. Runner-upteam included Ewald Prass, CleoParadis, Tom Todd, and Bud Fisher.

Don Peloquin took the low grossprize, with Bill Vickman the runner-up.Individual low net was won by AlbertRebellato, with Rick Ketter as runner-up.

Port Colborne pensionerthis month's logo writer

Former mayor of Port Colborne, NisNissen, now enjoying the ease of retire-ment, is this month's logo writer. Niscame to Canada from his native Denmarkin 1926, and joined International Nickel atthe Port Colborne refinery four years laterAfter broad experience working in theplant, he was appointed personnel officerin 1947, the position he held at retirementin 1968.

When the new Suburban RoadCommission was set up in 1966, Nisserved as chairman for the first two years.It was a fitting tribute to a man who hasdone so much for the community whenhe received the Port Colborne Chamberof Commerce's Meritorious Award at theChamber's quarterly dinner meeting heldin February 1974.

From 1948, Nis was actively involvedin municipal politics, starting as acouncillor with the village of Humber-stone, and then as deputy reeve until theamalgamation with the Town of PortColborne in 1952. He continued servingon the new council as deputy reeve, spent13 years as reeve and finally was mayorfrom 1968 to 1972. He was one of the

Their daughter,Elizabeth Anne, is married to DaleRobinson, superintendent of number oneresearch station in the refinery's researchcomplex at Port Colborne. They have twodaughters, Susan Beth and Kendra Jayne,who, according to mom, can twistgrandpa around their little fingers.
