2nd innings
2nd innings
Second innings centuries from Luis Reece and Billy Godleman were not enough as Northamptonshire won the opening Specsavers County Championship fixture. Opening pair Billy Godleman (156 not out) and Luis Reece, who hit a career best 168, shared a 333-run partnership in setting the record for a Derbyshire opening stand in the County Championship. Despite the best efforts of the pair, Northamptonshire claimed an opening victory in dramatic fashion, scoring the winning runs with just one over remaining. Derbyshire were put in to bat first but the only player to give the visitors bowling attack real trouble was Gary Wilson (72) who hit the 19th highest score by a Derbyshire player on debut. On the second morning, Derbyshire were dismissed for 281, with Tom Milnes (24) and Alex Hughes (21) adding important lower order runs. Half centuries from opening pair Ben Duckett (53) and Rob Newton (50) put Northamptonshire into a strong position early on, but some excellent bowling from Will Davis (4-60) pulled the game back for Derbyshire. An excellent last-wicket partnership between Max Holden (76) and Ben Sanderson (8 not out) of 47 helped them to a lead of 26 at the end of their first innings. Derbyshire started the second innings well, with Reece and Godleman looking in good touch. The pair raced to their centuries, with Reece climbing to his highest first-class total before being removed by Newton (1-82). Godleman and Shiv Thakor (12 not out) saw out the Derbyshire innings and declared to leave Northamptonshire needing 326 from the remaining 65 overs of the day. Northamptonshire batted well, with Newton (98) and Richard Levi (99) just missing out on centuries. The visitors managed to surpass the target set with three wickets in hand with only one ball remaining of the game, winning the first game of the season.

2nd innings
2nd innings
Will Davis took seven wickets in the match, while Gary Wilson hit 97, but Kent came out on top inside three days of the Specsavers County Championship at Canterbury. Davis looked dangerous with the ball throughout the match to put pressure on the home side, but Derbyshire couldn’t chase the total set by Kent and suffered their second defeat of the season. After Kent were put in to bat first, Derbyshire’s bowling attack started excellently, with Davis and Luis Reece (2-38) claiming two wickets a piece within three overs. Despite Derbyshire consistently taking wickets, Kent were still adding on runs well as they were eventually bowled out for 259. But the Derbyshire response started badly, with openers Billy Godleman and Reece both going for 0. Shiv Thakor (44) and Wayne Madsen (56) got the Derbyshire score ticking, with the pair making an 87 partnership before Thakor was out just short of his half century. Madsen reached his 50 but couldn’t find a partner to make runs alongside him as Derbyshire were dismissed trailing Kent by 100. Davis continued to bowl well through the home sides second innings, taking 3-48. But excellent batting displays from Darren Stevens (90) and James Tredwell (95 not out) made life difficult for the Derbyshire bowling attack. Kent set Derbyshire a huge total of 409 to win after being bowled all out for 308. The Derbyshire response started disastrously, losing five wickets for just 78 runs. A valiant 97 from Gary Wilson helped to give some life to the Derbyshire batting. But he couldn’t find a long term partner, with Tom Milnes being the highest scoring partner of his with just 17 runs. Once the home side had finally removed Wilson just three runs shy of his first Derbyshire century, it looked as if it was going to be difficult for Derbyshire. Kent removed Davis to confirm their victory by 169 runs.

2nd innings
Daryl Mitchell (120) and Brett D’Oliveira (150) hit centuries as Worcestershire claimed an innings and 42-run victory in the Specsavers County Championship. The huge partnership between the Worcestershire openers was too much for Derbyshire who were condemned to an innings defeat. Derbyshire were put in to bat first and Worcestershire made a strong start, removing Ben Slater (2) and Shiv Thakor (23) for 57. Luis Reece (54) and Alex Hughes (53) seemed to be the only batsman for the home side that could get a rhythm going with the pairing both reaching their half centuries. Daryn Smit (33) and Tony Palladino (32) added vital runs before Derbyshire were bowled all out for 275. The opening partnership of Mitchell and D’Oliveira was superb, with both players batting extremely well and passing their centuries as they made a 243 pairing. Their deadly pairing was finally disrupted as Mitchell was lbw to Shiv Thakor for 120, but by this stage the damage had seemingly already been done. Four wickets a piece for Thakor (4-45) and Jeevan Mendis (4-98) weren’t enough to stop Worcestershire climbing to a huge total. Tom Kohler-Cadmore added 42 runs before his side declared on 415 runs; giving Worcestershire a 140 run lead But Derbyshire never truly got going and were losing wickets cheaply from the start of their response. Derbyshire found themselves five down with only 33 runs on the board, with the likelihood of an innings defeat staring the home side in the face. Palladino made the strongest stand of any of the Derbyshire batsman as he managed to put 28 on the board. But it wasn’t enough as Derbyshire were bowled all out for 98 runs, giving Worcestershire a win by an innings and 42 runs.

Derbyshire hit their highest ever first-class total versus Leicestershire in a high-scoring Specsavers County Championship draw at The 3aaa County Ground, Billy Godleman (141) and Shiv Thakor (132) both hit centuries. There wasn’t enough game time for either side to find themselves a result and had to settle for a draw. Leicestershire won the toss and elected to bat first; a decision that seemed to pay off as Cosgrove (188), Ackermann (118 not out) and Eckersley (158) all put up huge 100’s to put the visitors on top.
After Cosgrove was finally dismissed, the Leicestershire wickets began to tumble, losing their final five wickets for just 38 runs.
Jeevan Mendis (6-204) claimed six wickets to help bring the huge Leicestershire innings to a close with them putting up 619. After opener Ben Slater (42) fell just short of his half-century, Billy Godleman (141) and Shiv Thakor (132) stepped up a gear.
Both Godleman and Thakor passed their half centuries to keep Derbyshire in the game and match the huge totals from their opposition.
Gary Wilson batted well, but fell just three runs short of his century whilst Daryn Smit added an important 40 runs to the home side’s total.
Derbyshire were finally bowled out for 533, the highest ever score by a Derbyshire team against Leicestershire in a first-class fixture. Leicestershire went into their second innings with not much of the game left. Half-centuries from Paul Horton (56) and Harry Dearden (78) put Leicestershire into a strong position before they were removed by Tom Taylor (1-45) and Mendis (2-79) respectively. Ackermann added 30 runs to the Leicestershire total before they declared in the hope of finding a result.
Ben Slater added 28 runs for Derbyshire, but with bad light around and a late declaration from Leicestershire, the game petered out into a draw, with both teams taking 11 points.

Conor McKerr took four wickets in the match on his Derbyshire debut, while Tom Taylor took six, but rain prevented victory over local rivals Nottinghamshire on the final day. A first innings century from Billy Godleman as well as a half-century in each innings for Wayne Madsen left Derbyshire needing just 26 to win, but rain on the final day at Trent Bridge stole the opportunity for a first Specsavers County Championship win of the season for Derbyshire. Captain Godleman took the decision to field first; a decision that would pay off early on, with Tony Palladino looking in fine form. He took 4-44, removing Nottinghamshire opener Steven Mullaney after he made an excellent start with the bat, as well as the ever dangerous Samit Patel. Tom Taylor (2-58) and loanee McKerr (2-53) took two wickets each as they helped see Nottinghamshire all out for just 229 runs. After Luis Reece (17) and Shiv Thakor found themselves out quickly, a 112 partnership between Godleman (121) and Madsen (56) put Derbyshire on the front foot and would have had the home side concerned. Daryn Smit (32) and Tom Taylor (32) added some important runs for Derbyshire before McKerr put up a last wicket 16. Derbyshire were eventually bowled all out for 363, giving the visitors a 134 run lead. After losing Jake Libby (15) and Cheteshwar Pujara (13) early, Mullaney and Patel (82) were looking dangerous once again as both batsman passed their half centuries. But excellent bowling from Taylor (4-67) and Jeevan Mendis (4-96) some them collect four wickets each and helped put Derbyshire into a strong position. This, alongside two more wickets from McKerr, helped remove Nottinghamshire for 349, leaving Derbyshire a target of 216 to claim a win over their local rivals. Derbyshire were looking on target to chase down the total, with 61 from Madsen pushing the Derbyshire total forward. As Gary Wilson (31*) looked to be racing towards victory; rain over Trent Bridge stopped play with Derbyshire just 26 away from a famous win. The Derbyshire players would have been frustrated to not be able to cross the line due to the weather, but would have gained confidence from the excellent performance.

Loanee Conor McKerr’s 10 wickets against Northamptonshire was not enough to prevent defeat for Derbyshire at Northampton. McKerr’s maiden five-wicket-haul was followed by yet another in the second innings, posting career best figures of 5-54. Rob Newton (67) and Rory Kleinveldt (40) batted well for Northamptonshire , but the rest of the team seemed to struggle with the bat.
McKerr, who was on-loan from Surrey, bowled excellently and claimed his maiden five-wicket-haul as he tore through the Northamptonshire batsmen.
Ben Duckett added an important 36, but Northamptonshire were all out for 218. Luis Reece was going to open the batting for Derbyshire, but after picking up an injury on the first day he was unable to take any further part in the game. This saw Jeevan Mendis open the batting alongside Billy Godleman, but he was removed with the first ball of the innings. Shiv Thakor (45) and Alex Hughes (62) batted well for Derbyshire as they put the visitors in a much stronger position.
But just as the Northamptonshire batsman had, Derbyshire were struggling to score runs, as they were dismissed for 176. Newton seemed to be one of the few players not having trouble with the bat on that day as he improved on his first innings efforts. He passed his century before he was removed by Tony Palladino (3-60). Both McKerr and Palladino bowled excellently once again, with the pair matching their first innings hauls as McKerr took his career best figures. Alex Wakely added 75 runs to his side’s total before Northamptonshire were bowled all out for 277, leaving Derbyshire needing 320 runs to win. Derbyshire continued to struggle with the bat, finding themselves three wickets down for just 21.
Alex Hughes (23) and Daryn Smit (29*) could only make minor contributions before being dismissed as defeat seemed to edge closer for Derbyshire
Taylor (69) and Smit managed to make an excellent 106 partnership for the 7th wicket, but it wasn't enough as Derbyshire were all out for 191, suffering a 128 run loss

Glamorgan v Derbyshire Derbyshire won by 39 runs The SSE SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff 26 - 29 June 2017 (Day/Night)
Toss: Derbyshire won the toss and decided to bat Umpires: PR Pollard, AG Wharf Points: Glamorgan 4; Derbyshire 21
Hamidullah Qadri took a maiden five-wicket haul on debut as Derbyshire defeated Glamorgan by 39 runs to claim a first Specsavers County Championship win of the season. The 16-year-old spinner returned second innings figures of 5-60 on his first appearance for the senior team, including the final wicket, to help dismiss the hosts for 172 at Cardiff, as the county secured their first four-day win since 2015.
Derbyshire chose to bat first in the Club’s first ever day-night first-class fixture and the conditions seemed to suit Derbyshire.
After Luis Reece fell for just one, Wayne Madsen came in and posted 70 to put Derbyshire in a strong position alongside Billy Godleman.
Contributions from Godleman (34), Alex Hughes (32) and Daryn Smit (41) put Derbyshire into a good position early on in the game.
Tom Milnes added to the Derbyshire scoring as he hit his third first-class half-century before Derbyshire were all out for 288. Tony Palladino ensured that the Glamorgan batsmen would have a difficult afternoon, taking 4-36. Qadri also took his maiden first-class wicket, going for just 16 runs from 15 overs in the first innings.
After scoring just one run in the first innings, Reece was the star of the second, hitting a crucial half-century for Derbyshire.
Godleman (27) and Jeevan Mendis (27) also hit vital runs for Derbyshire despite the rest of the team struggling. Derbyshire were bowled out for 160, giving the visitors a lead of 211 to defend. Glamorgan struggled, finding themselves at 42-4 thanks to wickets from Qadri and Mendis. Aneurin Donald (31) and Nick Selman (43) restored some hope for the Welsh side, making a 50 partnership. That was until Wayne Madsen came in to bowl and removed both of them. Qadri finished the job by collecting three more wickets, ensuring a win for Derbyshire and a memorable debut for the young spinner. He became the youngest ever player to take five wickets in first-class cricket in England, beating the previous record, held by WG Grace from 1865.

Derbyshire lost on the final day against Durham despite excellent performances from Alex Hughes, Matt Critchley and Imran Tahir, who was making his debut for the Club. Hughes hit a second innings 108 to keep his side in the game, but Durham reached their final day total to claim victory. Derbyshire batted first and looked strong early on with Wayne Madsen reaching 54 before Matt Critchley hit his second first-class hundred. Billy Godleman (98) came in later in the order after feeling ill early in the game. But that didn’t prevent the Captain from steadying the innings in a 102-run last wicket partnership with bowler Gurjit Singh, also making his debut, who hit a career-high 46 not out. Imran Tahir soon made his presence felt in the Durham innings, dismissing Paul Collingwood (4) and Jack Burnham (35) in quick succession. Tahir went on to take his maiden five-wicket-haul for Derbyshire, with Sandhu taking three wickets to remove Durham for 301 to put the home side in a strong position. But the second innings for Derbyshire never truly got going; with only Alex Hughes looking able to stay at the crease. Luis Reece contributed with 37 runs whilst Matt Critchley scored 28, but no other Derbyshire players could reach double figures. Hughes hit 17 boundaries as he battled towards an excellent 108 before he was lbw to Ryan Pringle for the last wicket. This left Durham needing 281 runs for victory on the final day of the game. Durham batted nicely and with poise, as Richardson (62), and Pringle (62 not out) both reached their half-centuries and Burnham hit 93 not out. Two wickets each for Hamidullah Qadri and Imran Tahir weren’t enough, with Durham claiming a six-wicket victory.

Derbyshire were beaten by Nottinghamshire in the Specsavers County Championship following a match-winning double-hundred from Alex Hales. Derbyshire opened the batting and started well, but Luis Reece fell just five short of his 50 to ex-Derbyshire man, Mark Footitt (2-49). Alex Hughes helped make the Derbyshire score much more competitive as he passed his half-century and proved difficult to remove. His last wicket partnership with Ben Cotton (32) helped push Derbyshire to 220 before Cotton was dismissed. Nottinghamshire’s start was similar to Derbyshire’s, with Mullaney making 50 but struggling to find a partner to build a partnership with. But Hales (218) quickly swung the game in the visitors’ favour with some ferocious batting which saw him reach a double-hundred. The England international hit 38 fours and one six on his way to a run-a-ball 218. He was finally dismissed by Wayne Madsen, who would finish with figures of 2-78. Hardus Viljoen (2-103) and Tom Taylor (2-75) both took two wickets a piece, but the Hales masterclass had already made life very difficult for Derbyshire. Chris Read (75) and Jake Ball (43) both added a good amount of runs before Nottinghamshire declared on 508 with one wicket remaining. The home side needed to make 289 to avoid an innings defeat, but struggled as they had in the first innings. Ben Slater (44) and Billy Godleman (47) looked to be finding their rhythm for Derbyshire, but it was unmatched as Derbyshire were all out for 227 - 62 runs short of forcing Nottinghamshire to bat again.

A century from Luis Reece wasn’t enough to prevent a nine-wicket defeat against Durham at Emirates Durham ICG. Reece’s hundred ensured that Derbyshire would avoid an innings defeat, but after a stuttering first innings from the visitors, Durham remained in control and claimed victory. After a slow start by Durham, with Keaton Jennings out without scoring and Tom Latham (27) falling early, Cameron Steel and Paul Collingwood increased the run rate for the hosts. Steel and Collingwood put on 48 runs before Steel was caught on 77. But Collingwood kicked on and reached 177 before he was removed by Hardus Viljoen (5-130). The former England international hit 20 fours and one six. A five-wicket-haul from Viljoen wasn't enough to prevent Durham from getting into a dominant position, declaring on 480 with one wicket remaining. In reply, Ben Slater hit 29, but Luis Reece (6), Billy Godleman (2) and Wayne Madsen (5) all fell cheaply. Alex Hughes (47) put up a good stand, but he fell just short of his half century. All out for 164, Derbyshire were forced to follow on, trailing Durham’s first innings total by 316 runs. The second Derbyshire innings started much stronger, with Luis Reece and Ben Slater making a 99 partnership before Slater went for 57. Reece and Madsen also had an excellent partnership as they added made 106 together before Madsen went just two short of his 50. Reece powered on for his century before being dismissed and helped Derbyshire to 354 all out. However, this meant that Durham would only need 39 runs to win. The home side lost just one wicket as Hardus Viljoen removed Tom Latham (16), but the hosts secured a nine-wicket victory.

Glamorgan 2nd innings
Derbyshire and Glamorgan were forced to accept a draw as three out of four days of their Specsavers County Championship match were abandoned due to bad weather. After two washed out days at The 3aaa County Ground, Derbyshire closed Day Three on 236-9 after Luis Reece hit 53, before Alex Hughes (44) and Gary Wilson (45) added 79 for the fifth wicket. Will Davis and Matt Critchley (24 not out) were the unbeaten batsmen at the end of play. Sadly, both teams were forced to accept a draw as no play was possible on the final day after heavy overnight rain left the outfield far too wet for any play. Only 72 overs were possible, as Glamorgan took eight points from the match and Derbyshire claimed six.

Hardus Viljoen’s spectacular 15-170 stunned Sussex as Derbyshire got their second win of the season at Hove. Viljoen posted career-best innings figures of 8-90 to seal victory on the final day for Derbyshire after an excellent first innings performance, in which he returned figures of 7-80. Derbyshire were put in to bat first, a decision that openers Ben Slater and Luis Reece seemed to relish as they formed a 100-run partnership. Reece fell having just passed his half-century whilst Slater fell just 11 balls later and just two runs short of his fifty. Billy Godleman and Alex Hughes continued the good work of Reece and Slater, adding 87 runs for the next wicket. Godleman fell for 51 and Hughes just missed out on 46, but Derbyshire began to build a sizeable score. Harvey Hosein contributed 38 not out as Derbyshire were all out for 338. Sussex’s reply stuttered from the off, with Viljoen bowling with pace and vigour. But Sussex managed to stay in the game thanks to good knocks from Luke Wells (46) and Luke Wright (70). Viljoen removed the majority of Sussex team to end with remarkable figures of 7-80, leaving Derbyshire with a 67-run lead. Stuart Whittingham shone for Sussex in Derbyshire’s second innings, taking five wickets. But Harry Podmore and Hosein’s 63-run partnership was crucial for Derbyshire who declared with a lead of 389. At tea on the final day, it seemed as if Sussex were going to find their way back into the game, with them at 267-3. But Hardus Viljoen’s devastating post-tea spell quickly pulled them to 318-8. Podmore finished the game off for Derbyshire as he collected the final two wickets, but they day belonged to Viljoen after posting career best figures of 8-90.

The Specsavers County Championship match between Derbyshire and Kent at Queen's Park was abandoned without a ball bowled. Heavy rain in the build up to the game, as well as rain on the second and third day of the game, caused increasingly soft ground conditions around the edge of the square. The umpire's inspected conditions each day, but deemed the outfield unfit for play. On the final morning, certain parts of the outfield remained unfit and the match was abandoned with both teams collecting five points.

Centuries from Wayne Madsen and Alex Hughes saw Derbyshire claim victory in the final game of the 2017 season against Gloucestershire. A 233-run partnership for the pair put Derbyshire set the foundations for a third win of the Specsavers County Championship campaign. Imran Tahir then claimed five wickets on the final day of the game to ensure that Derbyshire would end the season in style. Derbyshire were put in to bat first and made a solid start, with Ben Slater falling just five short of his half-century. But Madsen and Hughes propelled the Derbyshire scoring as both looked fluent and assured in reaching centuries. The impressive stand came to an end at 233 as Madsen was bowled on 121. Harvey Hosein (37 not out) and Harry Podmore (43) both added important runs to the Derbyshire total as they formed a 70-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Derbyshire were eventually bowled out for 460. Gloucestershire batted well, with James Bracey (82 not out) and George Hankins both passing half centuries. But after having only lost two wickets and trailing Derbyshire by 236 runs, the home side declared at the end of the third day in order to make all results possible on the final day. Luis Reece and Ben Slater added an unbeaten partnership of 144 runs before Derbyshire declared, setting Gloucestershire 381 runs to win. Two early wickets from Podmore (2-44) put Derbyshire into a strong position early on. But it was Tahir (5-76) who sealed the victory, claiming five of the wickets required to seal victory for Derbyshire. O M R W Wi Nb

Debutant Callum Brodrick hit his maiden first-class half-century as Derbyshire drew with the touring West Indians. Derbyshire handed first-class debuts to Brodrick, James Taylor and Matthew Sonczak for the day/night fixture - the first ever to take place at The 3aaa County Ground. West Indies won the toss and elected to bat, but they were soon one down as Tom Milnes removed Kraigg Brathwaite for three. But the tourists showed their batting prowess as Kieran Powell and Kyle Hope’s partnership passed 153. Sonczak broke the stand and claimed his maiden first-class wicket as he bowled Hope, removing him for 105. Shai Hope (107) and Roston Chase (110) both made centuries before the West Indies declared on 427. Ben Slater, opening with Charlie Macdonell (9) made 39, before he was out to Alzarri Joseph, Derbyshire slipping to 78-3. Tom Wood (15) and Harvey Hosein (4) were out quickly, whilst Tom Milnes and Greg Cork both failed to score. As wickets fell around him, Brodrick managed to steady the innings against the international bowling attack, reaching his maiden half-century for the Club. Derbyshire were bowled out for 181 on the second day, before Kieran Powell enjoyed another good batting spell, this time reaching 100 before retiring hurt. Chase added an unbeaten 60, whilst there were runs for Shane Dowrich (37) and Kemar Roach (40 not out). Macdonell (2-57) and James Taylor (1-14) claimed their maiden first class wickets before the tourists declared at 327-6 at tea. Slater (27 not out) and Macdonell (17 not out) saw out the remainder of the game before the teams shook hands on a draw.

Derbyshire Falcons claimed a point from the opening Royal London One-Day Cup fixture of the summer as heavy rain prevented a result at Durham. Durham had reached 194-2 after 34 overs when rain arrived at Chester-le-Street. Keaton Jennings hit 79, while Michael Richardson was 83 not out when play was halted. No further play was possible as heavy rain fell and both teams had to settle for a point to open the new one-day campaign.

Wayne Madsen hit a century as Derbyshire posted their highest List A score against Yorkshire Vikings, but ultimately lost by 15 runs at Headingley. Hardus Viljoen claimed a wicket in his fourth over and Jeevan Mendis took 2-59, but a well-made 140 from Peter Handscomb helped Yorkshire Vikings post 349-7 from their 50 overs. Madsen (112) added 117 with Daryn Smit, who was unbeaten on 77, giving Derbyshire hope of chasing 350 to win. But wickets fell at regular intervals and the Falcons fell short of their target, finishing on 334-8.

Alex Hughes hit a career-best unbeaten 96, but half-centuries from Cameron Delport, Ned Eckersley and Lewis Hill guided Leicestershire Foxes to a five-wicket win at the Fischer County Ground. Hughes was the mainstay of the Derbyshire innings, hitting ten fours and one six, but he was left stranded four short of a maiden List A century, as three wickets each for Gavin Griffiths and Dieter Klein dismissed the Falcons for 219. Ben Cotton was the pick of the Derbyshire bowlers, claiming 2-18 off his nine overs, but fifties from Delport (53), Eckersley (80) and Hill (68 not out) saw the hosts to victory with 10 overs to spare.

Despite 52 from Wayne Madsen and Imran Tahir’s 2-32, Derbyshire Falcons suffered their first defeat of the NatWest T20 Blast to Lancashire Lightning. Matt Critchley’s quick-fire 40 off 24 balls and a finely-paced 52 from Madsen guided Derbyshire to 152-8 on a slow, turning wicket. The hosts got off to a flyer in their response and, although they were pegged back by a brief flurry of wickets, Jos Buttler’s unbeaten knock of 42 steered them to victory.

A four-wicket defeat to Leicestershire Foxes meant Derbyshire Falcons were unable to seal a NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final spot at the first time of asking, with one crucial match still to play. After losing the toss and being put into bat, Derbyshire Falcons struggled to get going and lost wickets at regular intervals as they posted 139-7 from their 20 overs. Defending a low total, the Daryn Smit’s men managed to take six wickets, but 57 not out from Mark Cosgrove and 32 from Luke Ronchi steered the hosts to victory.

Twenty20 Quarter-Final
Derbyshire v Hampshire Hampshire won by 101 runs The 3aaa County Ground, Derby 22 August 2017
After a record-breaking campaign, Derbyshire Falcons bowed out of the NatWest T20 Blast with a 101-run quarter-final defeat to Hampshire at The 3aaa County Ground. It was only the second knockout match for Derbyshire in the format, at the end of a campaign which saw a number of Club records broken including the most wins and highest points tally. But 101 from Shahid Afridi and 3-25 from Kyle Abbott took the game away. Returning to lead the Falcons, Gary Wilson won the toss and decided to bat, but Hampshire took control early on, with Shahid Afridi taking 16 from the first over. The Falcons eventually found the breakthrough in the fifth over as Calvin Dickinson (18) was caught dramatically by a diving Matt Henry, but Afridi powered on alongside the incoming James Vince to end the powerplay at 71-1. He was dropped on 65 and went on to pass his 100 before he was caught by Ben Cotton off the bowling of Henry, hitting 10 fours and seven sixes during his innings. Hampshire reached the end of their 20 overs on a huge 249, leaving Derbyshire needing to complete the highest ever Twenty20 run chase for victory. Under scoreboard pressure, the Derbyshire response started poorly as they lost Billy Godleman (4) and Matt Critchley (1) within the first two overs. Luis Reece (16) responded well and smashed a huge six in the third over, but he was gone by the end of the over as he was caught behind by Dickinson. Hughes added a well-made 23, including a six over mid-wicket, but once was caught by Wood that brought the final pair to the crease with the score 102-9 in the 15th over. Tahir and Cotton made put on a defiant stand of 46 but Tahir was last man out for 23.
