The two giants of the game, co-favorites for the $25,000 first prize in this 72-hole test that begins today, have finished 1-2 in the annual money standings three times since Nicklaus turned pro in 1962. And theyre in that situation now, Nicklaus leading with $106,- 775 and Palmer second at $103,- 928. No other player has won more than $100,000 this season. Neither has led the money standings, considered by many of the touring pros as the real de- termination of the top player of the year, since Nicklaus led and Palmer finished second in 1967. There also was the possibility that NBA owners might take a vote on whether to approve a merger plan, although no vote was scheduled. ABA owners al- ready have agreed to merge. The NBA was to meet in one midtown hotel ;the ABA in an- other. Commissioner Walter Kennedy disclosed after a meeting April 22 that talks between the two merger committees had been go- ing on for two weeks. Two of the areas which were talked about were treatment of visiting students by campus police and crowd reaction to calls by offi- cials, particularly in basketball. Solutions decided upon as guide- lines were a better relationship with the law officers, and more courteous treatment of guests by staff members of the host school. A letter was sent to the offi- cials association that supplies referees for the basketball games concerning the throwing of trash on the court when fans do not like a call. The delegates were in general agreement that this was a prob- lem. In the letter, they suggested that the referees assess technical fouls more freely and more often for such conduct. In other business, the group voted on the spring Sportsman- ship Award, presented to the school judged to be the best- conducted and most hospitable in the league. The winner will be announced at a later date. The next sportsmanship meet- ing will be held at the Cotton Bowl. Football will be the subject then, and a trophy will be pre- sented at halftime of the game to the SWC school voted by its peers to receive the fall sports- manship award. dent Senate President Kent Caperton, and next year’s Presi­dent, John Sharp. In addition, Captain Edward C. Schillo of the Military Science Department spoke to the group, composed of similar representatives of the various member schools.

Suggestions were made about control at the spring sports, bas­ketball, baseball, and track. Two of the areas which were talked about were treatment of visiting students by campus police and crowd reaction to calls by offi­cials, particularly in basketball.

Solutions decided upon as guide­lines were a better relationship with the law officers, and more courteous treatment of guests by staff members of the host school.

A letter was sent to the offi­cials association that supplies referees for the basketball games concerning the throwing of trash on the court when fans do not like a call.

The delegates were in general agreement that this was a prob­lem. In the letter, they suggested that the referees assess technical fouls more freely and more often for such conduct.

In other business, the group voted on the spring Sportsman­ship Award, presented to the school judged to be the best- conducted and most hospitable in the league. The winner will be announced at a later date.

The next sportsmanship meet­ing will be held at the Cotton Bowl. Football will be the subject then, and a trophy will be pre­sented at halftime of the game to the SWC school voted by its peers to receive the fall sports­manship award.
