Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Deputy Principal Matters by Nathan Lawler Final HSC Examination On Monday, our class of 2019 sat their final HSC examinations. The final exams were Physics, Spanish Beginners, Design and Technology and Textiles and Design. Congratulations to all of the students who have now completed 13 years of schooling. We look forward to catching up with all students on 17 December from 2.00pm as we will be hosting a pizza afternoon tea for these students. This is also the day that students receive their results, so we look forward to celebrating their success and supporting those who are disappointed with their result. Learning and Support Team Planning Day On Monday, our Learning and Support Team spent time planning specific welfare events for students in 2020. This is an opportunity where our Year Advisers and other team members can review the year and discuss and plan targetted wellbeing activities for students in 2020. This year there were many new initiatives such as the Year 8 volunteering pro- gram, which saw every Year 8 student engage in a volunteering activity. This included reading to our primary school students, visiting nursing homes and making food and clothing for the homeless. The volunteering program will be ex- tended in 2020 and will involve other year groups. In 2020, we will further refine and strengthen our methods when tracking student progress. The SIHS Case Management System is our way of monitoring and supporting students with additional needs. This means that those students with additional learning or welfare needs have a designated case mentor, who is a vital support person when coordinating support. Many thanks to Mrs Nunura (Head Teacher Welfare) and the team for a productive day. Maths Competition News APSMO (Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad) Results 2019 Congratulations to all the students from years 7 and 8 who participated in the APSMO this year. Bare Creek Trail Run – Winners On Sunday we had a team of 20 runners competing in the Bare Creek Trail Run. Each year we go up against Killara High School in the teams event. This ‘mob match’ has been running for the past six years. In 2014 and 2015, Killara were victorious. However, for the last four years we have come out on top. In the ‘mob match’ format, our 10 fastest runners are matched against Killara’s 10 quickest runners. This year saw the biggest differential in our favour, which means we take home the shield for another 12 months. Many thanks to Mrs Frykberg who has been running our weekly Tuesday morning run club. This consistent approach to training has no doubt strengthened the performance of our team. Special mention to the following SIHS team members who achieved outstanding results: 1

st place out of 215 competitors in the 6km event with a time of 23:44 - Aidan L (Year 10)

Libby Cameron was elected as President for the second year running as was Jan Ewert (Treasurer) and Sarah Gibbons (Secretary). Nilu Habibi and Tracey Wallbridge have stood down as Vice Presidents. Nilu has been particularly vital in creating systems that support our school uniform shop and she is also the creator of the P&C website. Tracey has been a valued member of the school environment team and her hard work over the past few years has been greatly appreciated. Both Nilu and Tracey will continue their involvement in 2020. Long standing parents (and volunteers) John Cormican and Liz Paul were elected into the Vice- President roles for 2020. Many thanks to all parents for the ongoing support you provide our school community Loud Shirt Day On Friday 15 November, St Ives High School students were invited to wear their loudest, brightest shirt to school for Loud Shirt Day, a wonderful initiative that supports children who are deaf. This is always a special item on our yearly calendar as it is an opportunity to recognise those students in our Hearing Support Unit. It was a fun day for all and students had the opportunity to purchase delicious treats from a cake stall at Recess and from a barbecue at lunchtime. Photos will be in next week ’s newsletter. Thanks to the Support H Unit for organising a great day! Reporting Dates - Yearly reports will be published on the below dates: Friday, 29 November - Year 8 and 10 reports are published on the Parent Portal. REMEMBRANCE DAY On Monday 11 November, the school captains were invited to the service at Roseville RSL in combination with the opening of the Blair Wark Centre in Lindfield. The majority of schools in Ku-ring-gai were represented, all laying wreaths. Both Local and State members of government attended giving moving speeches about some of the notable locals who gave their lives in the Great War of 1914-18. Much of the information was supplied by the Ku-ring-gai Historical Society which has been researching locals who fought in the World Wars. The Ku-ring-gai Mayor gave her personal account of family experiences in the wars. The Council provided a lovely morning tea for all the schools and teachers present. BARE CREEK TRAIL RESULTS And it’s official! St Ives High are the champions again. Killara came out strong in the mob match, but our runners out ran them on the hills to achieve the fastest accumulated time. The race was tough and we had a number of new runners join the team. Congratulations to everyone who competed in the 6km and 12km event. Congratulations to Aidan L who was the overall winner of the 6km event in a blistering time of 23:42 (a full minute ahead of 2

INTERNATIONAL VISIT Yamanoshi Koryo Junior High School from Japan visited our school on Wednesday 13 November. We welcomed them in the library with short speeches and songs. The students spent an enjoyable and educational day with their buddies from St Ives High School, learning Australian slang, Australian trivia, comparing their country with Australia. The stu-dents were accompanied by their teachers and Deputy Principal. We gifted them an interesting book on English gram-mar and they gave us a Fujiyama puzzle which students are constructing in the library. After English classes, there was bush dancing in the gym followed by cultural games and activities brought in by the Japanese school. For lunch, the students and teachers enjoyed a barbecue hamburger. Overall, students from both schools made new friends and ex-changed addresses to keep up the friendship. YEAR 9 — 2020 YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE FROM 30 NOVEMBER TO 4 DECEMBER I have emailed to Year 9 students the work experience forms for 2020.
