Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Deputy Principal Matters by Nathan Lawler PAU Showcase The Performing Arts Unit held a mid-year showcase on Tuesday night. A variety show format was used with items from students in all PAU classes: hip-hop, acting for theatre and musical theatre. Students rehearsed over Monday and Tuesday before the show and the quality of the performances was out- standing given the small amount of time to prepare. The number of performances and the talent among the performers was outstanding and is a really positive sign, as we look forward to the school musical later this year. Thanks to Ashlea George for coordinating the PAU and bringing the show together. Thanks also to our tutors, Lauren Paul and Isaac Bradley. Year 11 High AchieversMorning Tea Earlier this week we held our high achievers morning tea for our top performing Year 11 students — Nicole C, Abigail B, Sina P, Alexander L, Ching P, Lachlan W, Gavin R, Nikita P, Eliana S-G, Matthew B, Elizabeth M, Lauren C, Elizabeth H, Cohen S, Liam D, Nicholas B, Angela K, Siu Yu H, Nathan C, Shannon L, Sophie C, Chiara B, Esther W, Chun Wai W, Kurt T. This is something we hold twice each year for those students who have performed strongly across all courses. It is always pleasing to see new faces in the mix and to those students who consistently rank in the top 25 students in their respective grades your effort is not unnoticed. Year 12 – We Are With YoubreakfastOn Thursday morning we held a surprise breakfast for our hard working Year 12 students. This was something as a staff we decided to do in recognition for the efforts of our students in their final year of school. Typically the end of Term 2 and start of Term 3 are very busy times with assessment tasks and major works being finalised, so this was a timely reminder for students that they have our support. It was also an opportunity to thank our Year 12 teachers, who have been busy engaging students delivering new syllabuses. Maths Gats Day A group of our top performing Year 10 students attended a Mathematics day on Wednesday. The day was run by Inquisitive Minds, who are a group that partner with MANSW (The Mathematical Association of NSW). This most recent workshop was held at Barker College and consisted of solving large numbers of interesting and challenging maths problems. There were over 90 students participating from Barker, Abbotsleigh, Ro- seville College, Loreto Normanhurst. Each student worked in teams of two. Our students performed extremely well with Will G and Luke B com- ing equal second in the mixed school competition. Many thanks to Mrs Berger who is continually motivating our top end Mathematics students. Term 2 Week 9 28 June 2019

Homeless Mufti Day On Wednesday, Ms Brown’s Year 12 Community and Family Studies class organised a mufti fundraiser for the homeless. The theme was beanies, scarves and gloves. The group raised an impressive $1300 that will be used to purchase swags for those in need. A special thanks to St Ives Lions Club, who generously donated $250. Netball Gala Day On Wednesday, Ms Margalit and Ms Fong organised for 75 Year 7-10 students to compete in an interschool Netball gala day at Willoughby. For many of our male students this was the first time they had played netball, however, under the tutelage of the above teachers all 7 teams won more games than they lost. Our Year 8 boys and Year 8 girls teams performed strongest, beating many of their opposition schools by large margins. I was lucky enough to go along for the day and I was thoroughly impressed with the skill and competitive drive on display. As someone with two small daughters I am looking forward to trying my hand at coaching down the track. If I stay close to Ms Margalit and Ms Fong I’m confident that I’ll start to learn the subtleties of the game.

Merit System Our Head of Welfare, Mrs Nunura, has been leading a team that has reviewed our school merit system. Out of the recommendations put forward, a new merit system has started this term for Years 7-11. The new system has been simplified with only one merit certificate, rather than the previous system that comprised a range of categories. The new certificate is in line with our three core values, Respect Perseverance Growth. Students can be awarded a certificate for applying themselves in any of these areas. Once a student has received 10 Merit Awards they will receive a Year Adviser's Award. Three Year Adviser Awards equates to a Deputy Principal's Award. Three Deputy Principal's Award gains a Principal's Award. The system still has the Medal of Distinction (earned after two Principal's Awards) and Medal of Honour (awarded by obtaining two Medals of Distinction). The current Year 12 cohort will still be under the old system, however, we have started this exciting transition with years 7-11. Rugby We would like to acknowledge that over the June long weekend Hugh M represented Gordon Rugby Club in the U14 State Championships. Not only was the team undefeated but they also went though to win the Championships against the ACT Brumbies 22-17 in the finals. Hugh was also a valued member in the U14 Boys Netball team that competed on Wednesday in the interschool competition. Who says rugby players don’t have finesse? Best wishes Nathan Lawler Deputy Principal

MORE ART FROM ST IVES HIGH SCHOOL AT THE SHOPS

Be sure to visit the ramp at St Ives Village Shops over the next two weeks. A new St Ives High display was hung on Sunday with the help of Year 9 parent Tracey, and even as they were being put up, passers by were stopping to comment on the talents of our students. Year 10 works are portraits drawn in white on grey paper and Year 9 have had their first try at oil painting (one of our PBL courses). The Year 9 paintings were judged by local artist Lyn Thomp-son ; Gemma L first prize, Hana J second prize, Liam W third prize with Vishwa D and Annabelle C highly commended. Congratulations to all exhibited students.

YEAR 8 STREET ART Year 8 Visual Arts students have been dodging the rain this week so they can finish their Street Art by the end of term. In class, students looked at contemporary issues and developed stencils on their chosen theme, before building up paste ups, spray paint layers and adding their own stickies on to individual boards. You will all be able to see the completed works at this year's Art Show coming up next term. Patricia Gettens Head Teacher Creative Arts Gats Coordinator Visual Arts Teacher

"Kindness can make a bad day good and a good day better". If everyone at St Ives High School fulfilled one act of kindness each day, imagine what a wonderful environment we would be learning in! Please come down and fill out a green slip if a student has displayed kindness or a purple slip for a teach-er. Each month 1 green and 1 purple slip will be drawn out of the box and a prize will be awarded to the selected student and teacher.
