1. Click on the corresponding year (ex: “2018-2019 Academic Calendar”)

2. Click on “Adding/Dropping Courses or Complete Withdrawal”

This shows the deadlines for adding a course, dropping a course, withdrawing from the quarter without paying tuition, needing entry codes, and S/NS a class.

Green writing below will show the box on the Academic Calendar that you should look at to find the time periods that you can drop or S/NS a class.

1. Is this class a requirement for your major or minor?a. Yes—it is suggested to complete the class with a passing grade, because a class that is S/NS

cannot count toward any university, college, or department requirements. Talk to your department’s advisor for your options!

b. No—you can S/NS or drop a class early in the quarter without any punishment.i. Will you receive a 2.0 or higher?

1. Yes—Changing the status of your class to S/NS Grading Option. A $20 fee is applied. [Last day to change to or from S/NS grade option. $20 fee]

a. An “S” grade, or satisfactory, is automatically converted from a numerical grade of 2.0 or above.

b. A “NS” grade, or not satisfactory, is given to a grade of 2.0 or less. No credit is awarded, but this will show up on your academic transcript.

How to S/NS a class:

1. Log into my.uw.edu

2. Click on the “Register using SLN codes” link under “Quick Links”

3. Under “Grading Option”, click the S/NS option next to the class(es) that you would like to take for credit/no credit.

4. Click on “Update Schedule” at the bottom of the page.

2. No—your other option is dropping a class. Depending on the date that you decide to drop the class, you may be assessed with a fee. https://registrar.washington.edu/course-registration/changing-or-dropping-courses/course-drop-policy-periods/

a. Is the date between Registration Period 1 and the 7th calendar day of the quarter (start of Period III)? [Last day to make changes via MyUW without being assessed a $20 Fee and possible tuition forfeiture]

i. Yes—there will be no record of the dropped course(s) on your transcript.

b. Is the date between the 8th and 14th calendar day of the quarter? [Unrestricted drop period $20 fee]

i. Yes—there will be no record of the dropped course(s) on your transcript, but a $20 Change of Registration Fee will be applied.

c. Is the date after the 14th calendar day of the quarter through the end of the Late Course Drop Period? [Late Course Drop Period Use of Annual Drop Required and a $20 Fee is Assessed]

i. Yes—only ONE “annual drop” will be allowed. A W grade and week designation (W3 through W7) will follow the course title on your transcript. A $20 Change of Registration Fee will be applied.

3. Under “Grading Option”, click the “Drop from schedule” box next to the class(es) that you would like to remove from your schedule.4. Click on “Update Schedule” at the bottom of the page.

d. Is it after these time periods? Did you have a rough quarter due to physical and/or mental debilitation, or unusual/extenuating circumstances beyond your control?

i. Yes—you can petition for a Hardship Withdrawal. These petitions are reviewed at the end of the quarter.
