What is depression?• A medical condition characterized by
overwhelming feelings of sadness, fear, and anger
• Affects mood, behavior, thought and physical health• May lead to suicide (10% success)
Types of depression
• Major Depression• Dysthymia• Bipolar Disorder• Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Major Depression
• Sudden onset caused by severe loss, crisis or change• Interference with normal
functioning• Prolong nature
Dysthymia
• The symptoms of Dysthymia is quite similar to major depression
• Relatively mild type but chronic
Bipolar Disorder
• Transitions between depression and mania
• Periods of Mania: abnormally happy, energetic or irritable condition; overconfidence; reckless behavior, less need for sleep
• Periods of Depression: crying; poor eye contact with others and negative outlook on life
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
• Consequence of seasonal changes
• Usual occurrence in fall, winter or reduced sunlight

symptoms: affective, behavioral, cognitive, or somatic.
• DSM is not used to categorize people but to categorize disorders that people have

Conclusion• Millions of people in the world are effected by
depression. Depression is complex, comes in many types and can cause severe consequences to those it inflicts. Without treatment in all likelihood your condition will worsen and persist. However with treatment your odds statistically for recovery from depression are very high!
