What is a dependent (or subordinate) clause?

A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a grammaticalsentence because of an extra element that changes anindependent clause into a dependent clause. It must always be

    connected to an independent clause.

    For example:

    DEPENDENT CLAUSE

    Because I was late

    When I miss the bus

The following sentences are examples ofdependent clauses connected to independentclauses:

Because I was late, I had to run all the way to school.

    Dependent Independent

I must drive to school when I miss the bus.

Fragments - may also be a dependent clause

and, therefore, cannot stand alone as a grammaticalsentence. To correct these fragments, combine themwith an independent clause or change them into anindependent clause.

    Examples:

    -Because I was late.

    -Who lives in Virginia.

    -I missed the bus but.
