Building a Foundation for YourFuture CareerCareer Tips for First YearsBy Michael Kueker, Alumni Sharing Knowledge (ASK) Mentor

As you begin your academic career atDePaul, it may seem premature to talkabout what youll do after graduation.However, it is never too early to startthinking about your career. If you startthinking about your career interestsduring your freshman year, you will befar ahead of your peers. And, come tothink of it, you have to be ahead of yourpeers to get a job and compete in any job

market. The problem is, at this stage in your life your resume

may look like a blank page. Here are some tips on how to fillin the blanks while laying a solid foundation for your futurecareer.

First, review the resume samples offered by the DePaul CareerCenter (careercenter.depaul.edu/resumes/). Use these examplesas a template to create your own resume, and fill in everythingyou have done in high school. By my freshman year of collegeI had worked as a busboy, volunteered for a med school andstarted my own open mic night at a local caf. This hadnothing to do with the field that I eventually went into(finance), but when your resume is a blank page, highlightingyour past experiences is a good start.

After youve completed a resume draft, start to think aboutyour connections. Chances are you know someone who knowssomeone who could land you in a position. At this point inyour young career, it is not the time to be picky about whereor what you do for work. Any opportunity to gainprofessional work experience or office experience isworthwhile. In my case, I was fortunate enough to work inproject management for my stepdad at a plastic surgery clinic.Again, this position had very little to do with finance, but itwas a professional experience that put my resume on the righttrack.

If you cant find a job through your connections, then look for a job in the Chicago Loop. Find workwhere you will interact with business professionals on a daily basis. This is because all internships wantcandidates with qualities like good people skills and teamwork and works well under pressure. Youwill learn good people skills, be part of a team, and work under pressure in a busy environment surroundby professionals while you sell cigars, fold pants or prepare lattes.

Timing is also very important. You should work in this job for at least six months. If you work at three

different retail or food service places in a six month period, your resume will look erratic andundependable. You dont want a future employer to question your work ethic. The other thing toremember is that you need to continually build your skills and range of experiences. After reaching acertain point, you will have squeezed all the professional value you can get out of a position and it will betime to move onto a role that will give you more valuable experience or expose you to an interesting field

One more thing: do something academically or at work that will make you stick out professionally. Forme, it was learning Chinese. Now, you dont have to learn Chinese to stand out, but its a worthwhileexample as its something that grabs a recruiters attention. As a job candidate, you want unique strengthskills or experiences on your resume that will make you memorable in an interview.

As a freshman, your focus should not be on, what job can I get now? but rather what job will this getme a year from now? Gaining experience in a professional setting will provide you with a solid

foundation for moving forward in your sophomore year. Utilize connections; work in a professional settinsuch as downtown Chicago; and do something extraordinary that will stand out in the recruiting andinterview process.

Articulate your experience through a compelling storythat is uniquely yours! In addition, it is equallyimportant for candidates to prepare for these phone

interviews by researching the company and preparingquestions about the job or the organization.

Last, but not least, be enthusiastic! An enthusiastic

candidate who seems eager and ready to hit theground running is more likely to move through theprocess than someone who is reserved and holds back

their excitement about the organization or position.

the interview should be conducted as if it were in-person:

dress professionally

come prepared with a good series of questions forthe company

be prepared to provide as many parallels as possiblebetween what the job requires and how your skillsand experiences translate well to the job

Nothing should be taken for granted; have a resume

and reference list ready so you can forward them via

email if requested by the interviewer(s). Follow upaccordingly after the interview with email thank you

letters to all interviewers. The Skype interview coulbe a prelude to further in-person interactions so the

best presentation is always the best practice.

Wait a beat before answering questions. Without

visual cues over phone and with the slight time lag iSkype, the interviewer may be about to ask an

additional question or provide clarifying information

You still need to prepare questions for the

interviewer. Employers have told me repeatedly thacandidates fail to do this more often with phone andSkype interviews.

Finding a job or internship can seem like a daunting process. TheCareer Center and Office of Student Employment have tools and

resources, including two online job posting systems exclusively forDePaul students, to help you find the opportunities that are right

for you.

Campus Job Board: On-Campus Jobs

The Campus Job Board (CJB) at studentemployment.depaul.edulists available on-campus positions throughout the university.

Jobs are available in a variety of departments across all skill levels.Some on-campus jobs also qualify as internships for academic

credit. You must be a current DePaul student (enrolled at leasthalf-time) to work on-campus.

To get the most out of your campus job search, follow these tips:

You can filter job postings in the CJB by campus, ladder level,

key word search, department or all of the above. To view allavailable jobs, leave the search criteria blank.

Before applying for a position, read the job description carefully

to ensure you meet the qualifications and availability needs. Besure to include all required application materials/information that

the job requests (i.e. writing sample, class schedule, filling out anadditional form and emailing it back etc.); failure to do so can

hinder your chances of getting a job.

Use a cover letter when applying for jobs, even if one is notrequired. A cover letter gives you the opportunity to tell the

employer more about the skills and experiences that may not belisted on your resume. When possible, tailor your resume and

cover letter to a position. You can store up to ten documents onthe CJB, so you can store/upload tailored resumes when applying

for jobs.

On-campus jobs are competitive, so start your job search early,and be patient and persistent!
