INTRODUCTION
1. What are ATA 100 Specs?A. The Air Transport Assoc. of America established standards for the presentation of certain
data produced by aircraft, engine, and component manufacturers which is required forsupport of their products.
2. Advantages
A. It minimizes cost and effort of operators to make the manufacturers data more compatiblefor the publishers, engineers, airframe manufacturers, owners, and mechanics.

A. Header and Footer
(1) The Header and Footer are set to mirror, so page numbers appear on the outside cornerof each page. See examples for placement of information.
B. The font is always Arial 11 pt, although section headings may be bold and underlined. Alloutline numbers and letters are Arial 11 pt, regular.
C. Paragraph spacing is set to 6 pt After. The default Style Sheet must have these attributespreset.
D. Page numbers further subdivide information within a section. Each section will have its ownset of the following page numbers available for use within the individual section.

(1) WARNINGS
(a) The word WARNING is bold, underlined, and in all capital letters.
(b) The text is plain, not underlined, and in all capital letters.
(c) A warning always precedes the paragraph it affects.
(d) If a warning and a caution both affect the same paragraph, the warning precedes thecaution.
(e) A warning must appear on the same page as the text it affects, unless the adjunct(s)has more text than will appear on one page.

(3) Type Effectivity: and the engine the manual applies to.
Note: In the case of a manual applying to more than one engine, each page willneed to show the effectivity specific to that page. In the case that effectivityvaries from page to page, within a section, the footer is not going to work.You can type the effectivity into a text box, set the layout property to abovetext, and move it over the footer area of each page.
(4) Create a Tab at 6.75"
(a) MENU: Format Tab [ hold ALT; press O, T ]
(b) Select and clear any tabs on the Tab Stop Position list.(c) Type 6.75 in the Tap Stop Position box on the upper left.
(d) Make sure alignment is set to right and leader is set to none.
(e) The footer should contain the following information

5. Alpha-Numeric Subdivisions

B. Creating a tabbing outline format with the numbering outline function (Level 1).
(1) MENU: Format Bullets and Numbering [ hold ALT; press O, N ](2) Select Outline Numbered and box to right of none
1 Press on bottom right.
2 Delete all contents of Number format box.
3 In Number Style box, select 1, 2, 3
4 In Numbering Format box, add a period after 1.
5 Click and set to Arial, Regular, 11.
6 Setting the alignment, tab space and indent is very tedious. You do not reallyneed to change these setting for the main outline.
Note: Some experimenting may be necessary for Warnings, Cautions, and
Notes, especially to have the text appear vertically aligned with theoutline number, while the is hanging on the left.

7 Editing Level 2
a Click on the next level in the Preview window.b Delete contents of Number format box.

C. Saving a New Style
(1) Once you have most of your outline organized in the Custom Outline Numbered Listwindow, you can save the Style Sheet with the following steps.
(a) Place your cursor on a line that is formatted as level 1 of your outline list.
(b) MENU: Format Styles and Formatting [ hold ALT; press O, S ]
(c) The Styles and Formatting panel will either appear on the left or right side of yourscreen.
(d) Click near the top of the Styles and Formatting panel.
(e) Name your Style
Note: The first few characters of the style name is very important, since that is allyou will see in the narrow window. If you begin the file name with anunderscore, it will appear near the top of the styles list.
(f) Click to exit.
(g) At the bottom of the Styles and Formatting panel, select Show: All Styles.
(h) Find the Style you just named and hover your mouse over the right side.
(i) A down arrow will appear on the right.
(j) Click
(k) Choose Modify from the popup menu.(l) Choose FormatNumbering from the bottom left of the Modify Style window.
(m) You can make any further adjustments to Numbering here.
Note: Be sure to click on the Modify Style window.
Note: The Modify Style window is the best place to adjust text attributes to bedifferent from the number list attributes.
Example: The word Note: is bold on the left, but the text is not bold.The Modify Style function controls the text on the right.

6. Text Adjuncts (Warnings, Cautions, Notes, Examples)
A. Two ways to Create Text Adjuncts(1) Text (NOTE or EXAMPLE)
(a) Repeat the previous steps for setting up alpha-numeric outline levels, except select(none) in the Number Style box.
(b) Enter the WARNING:, CAUTION:, or NOTE: into the Number format box.
(c) Set the Number position and Text Position.
NOTE: You may need to exit the Custom Outline Numbered List window severaltimes (by clicking ), in order to view your margins.
1 To re-enter the Custom Outline Numbered List window, set your cursor on aline of text within an outlined number, letter, or adjunct.
2 MENU: Format Bullets and Numbering [ hold ALT; press O, N ]
3 Click on the numbering or adjunct format you are currently working on.
4 Click on the bottom right.
(2) Graphic
1 Follow above steps 3. A. (1) (c) 1 thru 4.
2 Select New Picture in the Number Style box.
3 The Picture Bullet window will appear (wait a few seconds for it to load).
4 Click the button on the lower left.
5 Browse for the graphic of your choice.
NOTE: The black/white warning and caution graphics in the sample stylesheet, are 664 X 124 pixels and 300 dpi in PNG format.
6 Repeat steps 1 through 3. Your newly imported graphic will now appear in thePicture Bullet window. Just hover your mouse over the graphics to reveal the
name.NOTE: If you modify the graphic and re-import it into the Picture Bullet
window, the thumbnail in the Picture Bullet will not change. Irecommend changing the name with each new version.
Example: Picture_001.png, Picture_002.png, Picture_003.png, etc

B. Examples
(1) Whenever possible, you should list examples as adjuncts, instead of a part of aparagraph.
A. Average Temperatures
(1) The ambient ground air temperatures listed in the chart are meant only as a guide. Agreat deal of personal judgment must be used when selecting the seasonal grade ofoil to put into the engine.
EXAMPLE: If an aircraft is to be flown into an area that is much warmer or colder,only the personal judgment of the operator can be used to determinewhat grade of oil to use. When oil inlet temperatures approach themaximum allowable temperature during operation, it is a goodindication that a higher viscosity oil should be considered.
C. Keeping Paragraphs with Adjuncts
NOTE: From the ATA Spec 100 Manual:
Warnings, cautions and notes shall always be on the same page as the text towhich they apply.
(1) To set a paragraph to keep with next within paragraph properties.
(a) Open the file Sample_Adjunct Keep With Next.doc
(b) Scroll to the bottom of the first page.
1 Notice the NOTE is on page 2.
(c) Click the cursor anywhere within the paragraph preceding the NOTE.
(3. Check the Crankshaft)

(2) To set a paragraph to keep with next within a style sheet:
(a) Place your cursor on a line that is formatted on the style you want to change.(b) MENU: Format Styles and Formatting [ hold ALT; press O, S ]
(c) The Styles and Formatting panel will either appear on the left or right side of yourscreen.
(d) A down arrow will appear on the right.
(e) Click
(f) Choose Modify from the popup menu.
(g) Choose FormatParagraph from the bottom left of the Modify Style window.
(h) You can make any further adjustments to Numbering here.

7. Converting an Old Manual to the New Format
A. Importing (The easy way)(1) Open the original file.
(2) [ Ctrl A ] Select All
(3) [ Ctrl C ] Copy
(4) Open Notepad
NOTE: If you are converting a lot of sections, it can help to left click and drag the
notepad shortcut to your desktop, so you do not need to navigate the menuevery time.
(5) [ Ctrl V ] Paste
(6) [ Ctrl A ] Select All
(7) [ Ctrl C ] Copy
(8) In MS Word, Open a blank Lyco Manual template
(9) [ Ctrl V ] Paste(10) Notice every paragraph has a top level outlined. This will be to your advantage.
(a) Place your cursor on the left of each line.
(b) Delete any former outline numbers or letters.
(c) With your cursor on the left of paragraph (and right of outline number), press tab untilthe line reaches the outline level you need.
(11) You will need to copy the graphics separately, since they did not transfer fromnotepad.
B. Importing (The hard way)
NOTE: For the purpose of consistency, the following exercise is based upon using twospecific prepared files.
(1) Open the file __Style Sheet_blank.doc
(2) MENU: Insert File Browse to the file TEO-540-NC-76-00_Test.doc
(3) Click
(4) MENU: File Save As 76-00-01
(5) Scroll to the top of the first page.
(a) The imported text should appear as the following example:

C. Deleting all Section Breaks and Manual Page Breaks
(1) MENU: Edit Replace [ Ctrl H ]
(a) Click , unless the Less button is currently visible.
(b) Click in the box beside Find what (make sure box is empty).
(c) Click Special at the bottom of the Replace window.
1 In the pop-up menu, click Section Break.
2 ^b will appear in the in the Find what box.
(d) Make sure the replace box is completely empty.
(e) Click Replace All.
1 The header on the first page should have updated to the new style with the
logo.
D. Replacing FontsNOTE: There are two ways to replace fonts. You can use the Replace Font window or byselecting all. Knowing both ways can be very beneficial.
(1) Using the Formatting Toolbar.
(a) All of the fonts on the page are Times New Roman. The current font sizes vary as

(2) Using the Replace Function
(a) MENU: Edit
Replace [ Ctrl H ]
1 Click
2 Click in the box beside Find what (make sure box is empty).
3 Click on FormatFont on the bottom left of the find box.
4 Select Times New Roman in the Font Tab, Font box.
5 Click to exit.
6 Click in the box beside Replace with (make sure box is empty).
7 Click on FormatFont on the bottom left of the find box.
8 Select Arial in the Font Tab, Font box.
9 Click to exit.
10 Click Replace All.
(b) MENU: Format Styles and Formatting [ hold ALT; press O, S ]
(c) The Styles and Formatting panel will either appear on the left or right side of yourscreen.
(d) Click Available Styles at the bottom of the Styles and Formatting panel.
(e) At the top of the Pick formatting to apply window, click 1. _How To.
(f) Select and delete 76-00-00 on the top left.

E. Formatting the Header and Footer
(1) MENU: View
Header(2) Change XXXX Series XXXX Manualto the name of the Manual.
(3) In the footer, replace XXXX with the exact model number of the engine.
(4) In the footer, replace XX-XX-XX and the date with the proper information.
F. Formatting the Title
(1) At the top of the first page, delete 76-00-00 and 76-00-01.
(2) Center and Underline ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM MAINTENANCE.
G. Formatting the Paragraphs
(1) If the Styles and Formatting panel is not visible:
(a) MENU: Format Styles and Formatting [ hold ALT; press O, S ]
(b) The Styles and Formatting panel will either appear on the left or right side of yourscreen.
(2) Select all of the text from GENERAL DESCRIPTION to mitigated at the end of thefirst page.
(3) In the Styles and Formatting panel, click_Lyco 1 A (1) (a).
(4) The first line of text should now appear as 1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
(5) To make the next paragraph appear as Level A, click your mouse to the left side of thefirst paragraph (2. The Lycoming EEC)
(6) The cursor will appear to the left of the word Lycoming.
(7) Press the Tab key.
(a) The 1 changed to an A.
(b) Press the Tab key again
(c) The A changed to a (1).
(8) Hold Shift and press the Tab key.
(a) The (1) becomes and A again.

(9) Open the file _Sample Style Sheet.doc
(a) The following information explains how the sample manual page was edited.NOTE: From the ATA Spec 100 Manual:
The full name of the unit shall be shown in the lead title of the material. If the full nameis susceptible to abbreviation for common usage, the abbreviation shall also beincluded in parentheses in the title. Future reference to the unit within the write-upmay be by abbreviation.
NOTE: The style sheet for this tutorial was created without underlining 1. Level, asin the ATA book. The book does not specify to underline the 1. level, but theexample shows it underlined.
(b) Per the above quote from the ATA book, the first paragraph will now contain the textLycoming Electronic Engine Control System and then the abbreviation in
parentheses (EEC).(c) All of the paragraphs below Level A will only use the abbreviation EEC.
(d) In the sample, the information has been subdivided into individual information aboutthe three units of the EEC.
(e) The TAG-100, ADL-100, and APU-100 are in parenthesis as abbreviations.

A. Converting Tables to Text
(1) If you can not already see the gray lines on all borders of the table:
(a) MENU: Table Show Gridlines [ hold ALT; press A G ]
(2) Hover your mouse over the upper left side of the table and click the . This will selectthe entire table.
(a) MENU: Table Convert Table to Text [ hold alt; press A V B ]
(b) WAIT! Leave all of the text selected.
(c) MENU: Format Tabs [ hold alt; press O T ]

C. The Normal File
(1) The file Normal.dot is the default document that MS Word opens as a new blankdocument.
(a) You can preset the margins, default font, paragraph spacing, and style sheets in thenormal document.
(2) Saving Normal.dot
(a) MENU: File --> New [ hold alt; press F N ]
(b) Edit this blank document with all of the default page setup, font, paragraph, and style
sheet setting that you want to automatically appear in the new blank document.
1 Create a folder on your desktop named My Normal.
(c) MENU: File --> Save As [ hold alt; press F A ]
1 Browse to the My Normal folder on your desktop.
2 In the file name box, type, Normal with a capital N and lower case.
3 In the Save as type box, select Document Template.
a .dot will automatically appear in the File Name box after Normal.

5 MENU: File --> Exit [ hold alt; press F X ]a You just closed MS Word on purpose.
(d) In Windows Explorer, open the My Normal folder on your desktop.
(e) In Windows Explorer Navigate to the following path and keep the folder opened.

Title Page
Masthead, manual's identification, initial issue date
Revision Transmittal Letter (Sum of all TRs incorporated into full Revision)
Revision Highlight pages identify the affected pages in consecutive order and the reasonfor each change. (full revisions only)
Advises all holders of pages (temporary and full) to be removed and pages added by therevision.
When nearly all of the manual pages are revised, necessitating the issue of a completereplacement, the changed information is handled as a full revision.
After the original issue (Initial or Rev 0), each revision will be numbered in consecutivesequence and show date of issue, which is the same as the date appearing on the revisedpages only.
EXAMPLE: This is the exact same thing as saying to list the current revision number ontop of the Revision Transmittal, and on the footer of every changed page inthe manual.
Mailing addresses, telephone number and telex codes (if applicable) for themanufacturer/vendor or organization that has responsibility for the publication and/or is the
customer contactoffice for inquiries concerning the publication being transmitted.
Contact info can be moved or copied from Introduction and /or back of Title Page.
Check Introduction to see if this info should be exclusive to Transmittal Letter.
Transmittal Documents shall identify aircraft or engine applicability.
Do not to remove information affecting components still in service but out of production.
Record of Revisions (The page formerly known as Revision Log)
Revisions should be transmitted (shipped) to the operator or group of operators nolater than ten (10) working days after the date appearing on the revised pages.
Successive Revision numbers, issue dates, insertion dates and incorporator's initials.
Only edit this page with a full revision
Record of Temporary Revisions (Updated this, every time a TR is released)

Temporary Revisions shall be forwarded no later than five (5) working days after
the date appearing on the page or pages.
Temporary Revision Record Sheets (TR) (Cover Sheets)
Sometimes a TR can be issued without the approval of the FAA, but will await FAAapproval before incorporation. It completely depends upon the system and/or procedure.
You need to communicate with the FAA for the details on your exact situation.

Same manufacturer's masthead, model/series/type number, manual title andchapter/section/subject number as the publication page being revised.
The words "Temporary Revision" are at least 1/4" in height.
TR is headed by a subject title. Each TR applies to one subject only.
In the footer, specify the number of pages that comprise the revision, including TR coversheet and revised pages. All of these TR pages must be yellow.
EXAMPLE: "Page 1 of 6"
Unique numbers are assigned consecutively, starting with No. 1 for each chapter of amulti-chapter manual. In the Component Maintenance Manual, unique numbers are
assigned for each manual.EXAMPLE: The first TR issued against the chapter on Communications (23) will be
numbered "TEMPORARY REVISION NO. 23-1."
Origin reference number where it is applicable. (Service Bulletin, SI, SL, AD, etc)
Filing instructions specify the old TR that the new TR replaces.
EXAMPLE: "This Revision replaces Temporary Revision No. 23-12.
Filing instructions identify the chapter-section-subject and pagebeing revised, and the
insertion point of the new TR.EXAMPLE: "Insert facing page401, of 23-11-02."
Narrative type discussion of the reason for issue.
A manual-type write-up will be included in the permanent text.
These are the actual pages from the manual with the newly edited information.
TR Info is included at the bottom of each page in a removable text box.
TR is distributed as yellow pages and the following full revision will be distributed as
normal white paper with TR box deleted. Rev bars will remain on page, until the page isupdated by a TR or full revision.
When the full Revision is created, all previous TR information is deleted from the revisedpages, except on the Record of Temporary Revisions, where it is initialed asincorporated.
Revision instructions and the first revised page are placed adjacent to one another forshipment, but TR filing instructions will instruct to place TR Record Sheet in the frontal andthe revised sheets in the manual, in place of the previous pages.
MAINTAIN A MANUAL ON FILE THAT IS IDENTICAL TO HOW THE CUSTOMERSSHOULD APPEAR. AUDIT IT REGULARLY.
The content of a TR is incorporated into the manual by the full revision, or deleted within 90days from date of issuance, except for Temporary Revisions issued by an airframe orengine manufacturer to cover interim equipment configuration differences that result froman operator's planned incorporation of a Service Bulletin. Such temporary Revisions shallremain in effect until the manufacturer has been advised by the operator that fleet

For large manuals, the LEP can be prepared for each chapter of the manual. LycomingsMaintenance Manual is NOT considered to be large.
In the large manuals, the chapter listing includes the latest effective revision number and date foreach chapter or page block heading.
