Classschedule:Mondays,Wednesdays,Fridays–8:30to9:20amClasslocation:AlexanderHall,Room200(ALEX200)Calendardescription:Thiscoursepresentsthebasicconceptsofhealthanddiseaseinpopulations.Methodsusedin descriptive and analytic epidemiological studies, including the design, analysis andinterpretationofresultsforobservationalstudiesandfieldtrialsarepresented.Coursegoals:Thegoalsofthiscoursearetopresenttheepidemiologicalprinciplesandconceptsrequiredforthecollection,analysis,andinterpretationofhealthdataatthepopulationlevel.Coursecoordinator’sgoals:Tohelpfosterexcitementandinterestinepidemiology,inaclassroomenvironmentthatispositive,engagingandintellectuallychallenging.Courseobjectives:Attheendofthiscourse,thelearnershouldbeableto:

1. Describetheapplicationofepidemiologytodiseasecontrol,outbreakinvestigation,healthresearch,andcurrentpublichealth,animalhealthandOneHealthissues;

2. Identify, define, calculate, and interpret common measures of association (riskdifference,attributableriskexposed,populationattributablerisk,relativerisk,oddsratios) and measures of disease frequency (prevalence, risks, rates) used inepidemiologicalresearch,andcitetheirstrengthsandlimitations;

3. Describe how to select appropriately-sized samples from populations for surveysandobservationalstudies;

4. Discuss disease causation, statistical associations and causal inference, and rankcommonstudydesignsbytheirabilitytoestablishcausality;

5. Discuss the use of screening tests, identify the criteria used to evaluate tests, andexplain epidemiological sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and agreement,includinghowtocalculatethesemeasures;

6. Discuss thedesign,methodologyand strengths/limitationsof eachof the commonobservationalandexperimentalstudytypesinepidemiology;

7. Identify and discuss the potential effects of common biases observed inepidemiological research, including various selection biases, misclassification andconfounding;

8. Explain the concepts of incubation and latent periods, state transition models,effectiveandbasicreproductivenumbers,andgiveexamplesofstrategiestoreducethelatterfordiseasecontrol.
