BHUMET News Head’s Desk

Dear Friends,

It gives me immense pleasure to present before you this issue of BHUMET

newsletter. We had a busy and active schedule for the even semester of 2016

beginning from January to June. Apart from Metallurgy Day and Maitri Shield

matches, we had with us our former colleague and a brilliant teacher Professor

S Ranganathan who gave T R Anantharaman Memorial Lecture-2016.

Students have displayed their organizational skill during Anveshan as well as

their research potential during Institute Day. Members of BHUMET family were

actively involved in overseeing the preparation of EMSI-2016. All the participants from India and abroad

had expressed their appreciation for nice quality of conference both socially and academically. We are

looking forward to your kind help and support for furthering the cause of academic excellence. Please do

write to us for attaining greater height in academic pursuits in entirety.

Institute Day

The 2nd Edition of Institute Day kick-started with a cauldron of technical events blended with soothing

cultural events. This year we have new events namely- Poster Presentation, Industry-Institute Interaction

and Institute-Public Interaction session. Poster presentation has three categories- B tech, M tech and Ph

D categories . Students were given the opportunity to present their research in the form of poster. The

best posters were selected out of them on the basis of novelty in the research and its applicability.

Prof. T.R. Anantharaman Memorial Lecture

In memory of one of India's pre-eminent metallurgist,materials scientist and

academic leader,Prof. T.R. anantharaman who served as Director,IT and Rec-

tor & Actg.,VC,BHUthe institute has initiated this lecture series.This lecture

series is delievered by a metallurgist and amterials scientist for his out-

standing contribution and carries a memento and cash award of Rs.

30,000/- .Prof. srinavasa Ranganathan,NASI Platinum jubilee fellow and

Emeritus professor,Department of Materials Engineering,Indian Institute of

Science delievered the fifth lecture in this series on a very vivid topic "Novel

Atomic Configurations in Metallics: A passionate pursuit" at NP Gandhi Me-

morial Hall,Dept. of Metallurgical Engg..

. The selected posters were presented on

the final day of this event. Mr. Manish Ku-

mar Singh, PhD research scholar from Met-

allurgical Engineering got selected for the

final round of poster presentation. His work

featured on “FCC to orthorhombic transfor-

mation in Gold Nanoparticles”. In order to

orient ourselves to do research according

to the needs of the industries and to increase the interaction with the industries, an Institute-Industry

Interactive session was organized. Stalls representing the research works of each department were

installed in the lawns of Swatantrata Bhavan. Our director, Prof. Rajeev Sangal visited our stall and

praised our research work on Ni-free Nitrogen Stainless Steel. An interactive session between public

and institute was organized to understand the needs of the public. Many school children visited our

stalls and interacted with us. In order to interact with school children, we arranged models of Platon-

ic Solids, Blast furnace and minerals. They gazed at them curiously asked us interesting questions.

Prof. R.K.Mandal explained the children about the platonic solids. They were given a word of inspira-

tion by our professors and students. On the side-lines of institute day we had cultural event-

“Viraasat” organized by SPIC MACAY and Indian Music Club, IIT BHU.

The steel production in India is expected to touch 200 million ton by next decade. The production capaci-

ties of non-ferrous plants are also going to increase significantly in the coming decade. The demand for

human resource may also increase with the metal production in India. This demand for human resource

is being fulfilled by academic institutions like, IITs NITs and others.This workshop has been organised to

refresh the theoretical and practical knowledge of persons engaged in academic activities in India espe-

cially in the area of extractive metallurgy. Eminent professors from academic institutions and scientists

from R&D organization were invited to deliver lectures on the subject related to ferrous and non-ferrous

extractive metallurgy. In addition to lectures, practical demonstrations were organized to help in develop-

ing extractive metallurgy laboratory in various institutions. The main focus of this workshop was on devel-

oping laboratory with limited resources available in most of the institutions.

The three days’ workshop started on 8th July 2016 with an inaugural function. The program was presided

over by Dr.Premchand, Ex.Scientist, Guest of Honour, Dr. R.C.Gupta Ex Professor & Head BHU (MET),

Chief Guest and Dr. R.K.Mandal, Head, Department of Metallurgical Engineering, IIT BHU. . The day

started with the offering of floral tributes to the statue of Pandit. Madan Mohan Malviya followed by the

Kulgeet. Dr. G.S.Mahobia, Convenor ETEM-2016, welcomed the delegates. Dr.O.P.Sinha, Chairman,

ETEM-2016 briefed the delegates about ETEM-2016.

The following were the invited speakers of this workshop: Dr. R C Gupta, IIT BHU, Varanasi, Dr. A K

Jouhari, ASET, AU, Lucknow, Dr. T R Mankhand, IIT BHU, Varanasi, Dr. J K Singh, IIT BHU, Varanasi, Dr G

S Mahobia, IIT BHU, Varanasi, Dr. O P Sinha, IIT BHU, Varanasi, Dr. K K Prasad, NIT Surathkal, Dr. D Pas-

wan NML Jamshedpur and Dr. A K Vaish, MSU Baroda. The workshop had both practical and theoretical

sessions.

Experimental techniques in Extractive Metallurgy

He Emphasized on the fact that "Mathemetics is not to be afraid of,but it is to be embraced". He remind-

ed us about Prof. T.R.Anantharaman, who encouraged Indian scientists to work on Metallic Glasses. In

his lecture he explained us about the research done in the field of Multi-metallic materials and High en-

tropy alloys. He reminded us again about the pioneering leadership of Prof. T.R.Anantharaman who

helped our Metallurgical Engineering Department to become Center for Advanced Study,.He also praised

Varanasi calling it a 'Sangam of Art and Technology.Later on,He recalled his Reminisces with Varana-

si,Cambridge,Berkeley and IISC,Bangalore.

Our Department in association with the Electron Microscope Society of India (EMSI) organized an Interna-

tional Conference on Electron Microscopy and the XXXVII Annual Meeting of the Society during June 2-4,

2016 at Varanasi which coincided with the year-long centennial celebration of the Banaras Hindu Univer-

sity, founded by Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1916. It is well known that the Banaras Hindu University

has contributed immensely to the electron microscopy research since 1963 and has produced many re-

nowned electron microscopists.

This conference aimed at bringing together a large number of distinguished researchers, micros-

copists and technical experts from across the globe to discuss the latest advancements on the character-

ization of materials at atomic level. For the benefit of the participants and young researchers, three pre-

conference workshops were organized from May 30- June 1, 2016 on: (i) Electron Microscopy in Materi-

als Science, (ii) in Biological Sciences, both in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, IIT (BHU) and

(iii) Electron Probe Micro Analyzer (EPMA) in the Department of Geology, BHU. Nearly 100 participants,

mostly young researchers and doctoral students from all over the country attended and found delibera-

tions in the workshops useful for their research. Subsequent to the workshops, more than 300 partici-

pants from various countries attended this international conference on ‘Electron Microscopy’. There were

14 plenary lectures by the eminent international experts drawn from India and abroad and 121 oral

presentations of which 54 were invited and 67 being contributory lectures. The poster presentation ses-

sions consisting of 95 papers and Metallography contests with more than 30 entries were also conduct-

ed. Twenty technical sessions were planned over 3 days covering the subjects such as nanomaterials,

steel, nonferrous and complex metallic alloys as well as various techniques such as SEM-FIB, EBSD, elec-

tron diffiaction, HREM, atom probe tomography etc. Some sessions were also devoted to the biological

as well as earth & planatory sciences.

In the inaugural session which included the award ceremony, R.K. Mandal (IIT-BHU), Chairman of

the EMSI 2016 welcomed the delegates and urged them to engage themselves with meaningful discus-

sion during the conference. M. Vijayalakshmi (Kalpakkam), President of EMSI briefed about the theme of

the conference and highlighted the importantce of the meeting at Varanasi. G. C. Tripathi, Vice-

Chancellor of BHU and Chairman, BOG, IIT (BHU) expressed his assurance for the successful growth of

electron microscopy research in BHU. G.V.S. Sastry, acting Director of IIT (BHU) elaborated the role of

electron microscopy in the advancement of knowledge. He also shared his experience

about the near-discovery of quasicrystalline phase in Al-Pd and Al-Mn-Ni in early seventies along

with G.Van Tendeloo (Belgium) during his visit to BHU. As a Chief Guest, R. Chidambaram (New Delhi),

Principal Scientific Adviser to the Govt. of India in his inaugural address discussed about the importance

of sophisticated techniques such as electron microscopy for materials research. He pointed out the im-

portance of new variant of microscopes in solving some of the challenging problems in biological scienc-

es. Indigenous technology for manufacturing electron microscopes in the country were emphasized as

per the mandate for technology development set out by the Government of India. He stressed how the

basic and deliverable research should be developed using advanced characterization techniques. He also

suggested involving many more scientists from biological sciences to exploit these techniques. N.K.

Mukhopadhyay (IIT-BHU), convener, EMSI-2016, mentioned with examples how technology drives science

and quoted from the article by P. Balaram from Current Science - Seeing is believing, which is highly rele-

vant to the present context.

Naburun Tournament

The Naburun Tournament is an annual sports competition between students of

all five years of metallurgical Engineering. It was held for the first time in com-

memoration of Naburun Rai Dastidar of 1993 batch. Late Mr. Naburun Rai Das-

tidar was celebrated as 'Jack of all Trades' in the world of sports. He was a very

vivid sports personality, BHU ever had. Unfortunately, he entered upon an eternal

Sabbath of rest in the ground itself. A genus of eight students from each year

compete in basketball, badminton, volleyball and football Kaushik Kumar Mahato during

. METSOC Society framed the rules and regulation for the tournament. Group Games likes Men Doubles,

Men Singles, Women Doubles and Mixed Singles were held. Fourth yearites soloed to victory with first

yearites being declared as Runner up. Mr. Sachin Gupta was declared as Best Player for the Tournament

for his exemplary performance in basketball, volleyball and football. Winning year was bestowed with a

cash prize of Rs. 25,000 with best player receiving Rs.10,000 sponsored by the batch of '93

Maitri Shield

Along with Technology, the department of

Metallurgical Engg. provides to encourage

sports and other physical activities. Maitri

Shield is a well-known example of it, which is

organized under the banner of MeTSOC in

the month of March. Similar to the preceding

years, the competition was between stu-

dents and faculty members in different

sports like cricket, badminton, table tennis

etc .Students continued their legacy in crick-

et after winning a thrilling match at IIT Gym-

khana A grueling match of badminton took

place at J.K. Hall , in which Dr. C.K. Behra

and Mr.Mahobia showed some master piece of their skills and defeated the student Team both in sin-

gle and doubles. A similar high pitch match held in T.T. were students team defeated the faculty

team .Apart from outdoor activities, other events like Carrom and Chess were also held in these two days

which contributed a much needed refreshment for Teachers and Students. The events were followed by

lunch which provided students a healthy interaction with teachers and their family members. Finally th

HOD,Dr. R.K. Mandal brought down the curtains of these glorious days declaring students as overall win-

ner. He also admired members of METSOC for their irreplaceable contribution and emphasized on the

importance of such events.

Metallurgy Day

Metallurgy Day celebrations were held on 4th April

2016. Prof Shrikant Lele was the Honorable Chief

Guest for this event. Annual report was presented by

Dr. R.K.Mandal, Head of Department, Metallurgical

Engineering, IIT (BHU). Students of the department

were awarded various awards and scholarships for

outstanding performance in their respective fields.

Prof. T.A.Abhinandan was conferred Distinguished

Alumnus Award. He shared his memories with the de-

partment. Prof S.N.Ojha was awarded Distinguished

Services Award for his work in the field of Metallurgi-

cal Engineering.

Anveshan

If we try to delve into the origin of Anveshan , we find the word deriving its meaning from the Sanskrit of

“khoj”. Adopting this as the name of the fest of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering (IIT BHU Va-

ranasi), in each edition we have tried to boost the search for innovation in Metallurgy and Material Sci-

ences. Working this year on the theme of “Discovering Tomorrow”, Anveshan’16 focused at the im-

portance of materials in defining an era and our quest of newer materials which would build a better to-

morrow.

Anveshan’16 was held from 22nd – 24th January 2016 and aimed at synergizing the efforts of academia,

research organizations and industries in propelling futuristic technological developments. It provided a

platform to the most inquisitive minds to get exposed to the real challenges faced by professionals in in-

dustry and academia across the globe.

GUEST LECTURES

The Guest lectures encompassed different dimensions of Metallurgy and Material Sciences. The first day

covered the Industrial aspect of Metallurgy with Dr. Venugopalan (CTO- Tata Steel) speaking on 'Indian

Steel Industry - Growth & Opportunities'. Moving on from the gigantic steel industry to the realm of nano-

sciences we had Dr Partha Ghoshal (Head Scientist, Electron Microscopy group DMRL) talking about the

Nano Materials and Technology. The closing ceremony was graced by Dr Pradip (Vice President, TCS )

who exposed us with the Grand Challenges in Minerals and Metals Processing. Dr. Beena Rai (Principal

Scientist, TCS) enlightened us on the Molecular Simulations Based Design & Development of Reagents

for Mineral, Metals and Materials Processing.

INITIO was one of the main attractions for academic enthusiasts. It required the participants to put on

their thinking caps and present an out-of-the-box solution to the real life problems. Anveshan’16 became

a witness to some very innovative solutions to the singular problem of fog prevailing in the Indian Rail-

ways. This problem was given to us by the Malaviya Chair for Railway Technology.

The participants were required to present

a material based solutions to the afore-

mentioned problem. The other problem

came directly from TRDDC, the research

division of TCS. The participants had to

provide an effective solution for produc-

tion of automotive gears through additive

manufacturing route.

The latter months of the year 2015 and

the month of January 2016 has struck a

single tone across many countries in al-

most every continent on Planet Earth. The Senates, Parliaments, Board rooms, discussion rooms, dinner

tables, interviews, debates and parties across the globe have seen discussions on this topic at least once

in the past few weeks – “CLIMATE CHANGE”.Taking inspiration from the Paris Summit (2015) Anveshan

provided a platform to address the Climate issue which is the hot topic of discussion across the world.

METCON was a model G20 summit with the topic for discussion being ‘Transforming the world’s fossil

fuel driven economy.’ There was an excellent gathering of delegates and the day-long debate brought for-

ward many possible courses of action that can be adopted in real life.

RIVISTA was the paper and poster presentation event of Anveshan’16. The event provided a platform for

budding scientists and researchers to showcase findings in numerous fields ranging from extraction of

materials to their application in structural, advanced material and automotive sector.

The most sought after event of Anveshan was Internado, the National Internship Fair. Through this event

Anveshan seeks to strengthen industry-academia connect and provide an enriching experience to stu-

dents in research laboratories and industry. This edition hosted internship opportunities from steel giants

like Tata Steel, SAIL, JSPL; research laboratories like NML, DMSRDE, DMRL, Bharat Forge and start-ups

like Pick My Laundry.

Quarks was the quizzing event of Anveshan’16 in which the participants had to laterally think out the an-

swers to some mind boggling questions. It was a General Quiz that tested the knowledge from all walks of

life like politics, sports, science, entertainment, business etc. It attracted a huge crowd who cheered the

finalists in the grand finale of the event.

Apart from the on-day events, online events had commenced much earlier, the chief attraction among

them being CODEMET. Codemet was an online coding competition providing a flavour of Computational

Metallurgy and Simulation to the participants.

The events attracted crowd from various states across the nation which not only included metallurgists

but also students from other disciplines like Chemical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Sciences. In

fact this interdisciplinary nature of the fest made it a huge success. The association with reputed indus-

tries, tech giants, prospering start ups and eminent personalities added to the brand value of Anveshan.

PUBLICATIONS & CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS

During the year under review, students and faculty members of the Department have published more

than 50 research papers in national and international journals of repute. In addition, they have contribut-

ed more than 11 presentations in national and international conferences. Several of these have been

keynote/ invited lectures and session chairs. Department deputed some of the faculty members and stu-

dents for attending NMD-ATM of IIM in Coimbatore (13-16 November 2015).

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

This year 53 students have completed B.Tech. programme, 12 students have completed Dual Degree

M.Tech. programme and 06 candidates completed M. Tech. Degree. Shri J.K. Singh and Ms. Raviathul

Basarayia were awarded Ph. D. degree during this session. ś
