Course Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

• Prioritize assessment needs for the critically ill patient.

• Select appropriate diagnostic tests

• Identify and respond to significant changes in the unstable patient.

• Recognize and initiate the management of acute life-threatening conditions.

• Recognize the need for patient transfer and prepare the practitioners for optimally accomplishing the transfer.

Target Audience

This course is intended for healthcare professionals; hospitalists, internal medicine physicians, emergency medicine physicians, critical care physicians, neurologists, medical residents/fellows, medical students, physician extenders, nurses and allied health professionals.

Accreditation Statement

The Inova Office of Continuing Medical Education is accredited by the Medical Society of Virginia to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation

Course Description

A two-day comprehensive course addressing fundamental management principles for the initial care of critically ill patients.

• 14 didactic lectures

• 9 case-based skill stations with use of state-of-the-art simulation trainers

• Pre- and Post tests

• Certificate of successful course completion

• Requirements for successful course completion are:

- attend all didactic sessions

- successfully complete all skill stations

- obtain 70% or higher on the post test

• SCCM maintains database of FCCS providers/instructors

Statement of Need

The FCCS curriculum is intended to introduce principles important in the initial care of critically ill/injured patients to physicians, physicians-in-training, nurses and other healthcare providers who may or may not be skilled in critical care but who must care for such patients during the early stabilization and in anticipation of the arrival of an intensivist, specialist or pending transfer of a patient to a tertiary center.

The FCCS course was prepared under the direction of the Society of Critical Care Medicine by leading critical care educators in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, nursing, pediatrics and surgery. The content was developed with input from international critical care experts.

Competency and Assessment Form required for renewal of an active medical license in Virginia. For those eligible, CE’s available upon completion of course.
