Department of mechanical engineering

organized a two day national seminor on

the topic “Finite Elements Formulations

for Nano Structures” in association with

Department of Science & Technology

(DST), during 19-20th August, 2011.

A nanostructure is an object of

intermediate size between microscopic

and molecular structures. In describing

nanostructures it is necessary to

differentiate between the number of dimensions on the nanoscale. Nanotextured surfaces have one

dimension on the nanoscale, i.e., only the thickness of the surface of an object is between 0.1 and

100 nm. Nanotubes have two dimensions on the nanoscale, i.e., the diameter of the tube is between

0.1 and 100 nm; its length could be much greater. Finally, spherical nanoparticles have three dimensions

on the nanoscale, i.e., the particle is between 0.1 and 100 nm in each spatial dimension. The terms

nanoparticles and ultrafine particles (UFP) often are used synonymously although UFP can reach

into the micrometre range.

Interest in nanotechnology is growing rapidly. Now it is possible to arrange atoms into structures that

are only a few nanometers in size. A nanometer is about four atom diameters or 1 / 50 000 of a

human hair. (Your fingernails grew about a nanometer while reading this.) A particularly attractive

goal is the self-assembly of nanostructures, which produces large amounts of artificial materials with

new properties. In order to connect nanostructures to the more familiar world of microstructures and

microelectronics, one wants to to build up larger assemblies by guided self-assembly.

Suresh Kumar Janagade, Project Director, Senior vice president Lanco, Kondapalli graced the function

as Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, he discussed the basic needs of research in the area of

Finite Elements Formulations for Nano Structures.

Dr. B. Bangaru Babu, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIT Warangal delivered

lecturer on the basics of Finite Elements Formulations for Nano Structures.

Dr. R. Vijay, Scientist – E, ARCI, Hyderabad, delivered lecturer on latest advancements in the Finite

Elements Formulations for Nano structures.

Department of mechanical engineering organized a two day national seminar on the topic ‘Integration

of Reverse Engineering and Rapid Prototyping’ in association with Department of Science & Technology

(DST), Govt. of India, New Delhi, during

16th – 17th March, 2012.

Rapid Prototyping is a group of techniques

used to quickly fabricate a scale model of

a physical part or assembly using three-

dimensional computer aided design (CAD)

data. Construction of the part or assembly

is usually done using 3D printing

technology. The first techniques for rapid

prototyping became available in the late 1980s and were used to produce models and prototype

parts. Today, they are used for a wide range of applications and are used to manufacture production-

quality parts in relatively small numbers if desired without the typical unfavorable short-run economics.

Rajesh Mumbaraddi, Senior Territory Manager, Altem Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Chennai graced the

function the function as Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, he discussed the challenges faced

in Reverse Engineering and Rapid Prototyping and stressed upon the remedial measures required to

be taken in this respect.

Sri Y. Gopal Rao, Vice President (Operations) in Kusalava International Ltd., Vijayawada delivered

lecturer on latest techniques and methods for Rapid Prototyping. Dr. A. S. Sekar, Department of

Mechanical Engineering, IIT Chennai, highlighted the various aspects of signal conditioning and

analysis. Dr. Yennam Ravi Kumar, Asst. Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering,

NationalInstitute of Technology (NIT), Warangal highlighted the various aspects of Reverse

Engineering. The fuction was presided over by Dr. G. SARAVANA KUMAR, Assistant Professor,

Department of Engineering Design, Indian Institute of Technology Madras. The workshop was

organized by Mr. A. Mallikarjuna Rao, Asst. Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, V.R.

Siddhartha Engineering College, Vijayawada.
