Data use draining your battery? Tiny device to speed up memory while also saving power

The more objects we make "smart," from watches to entire buildings, the greater the need for

these devices to store and retrieve massive amounts of data quickly without consuming too much

power. Millions of new memory cells could be part of a computer chip and provide that speed

and energy savings, thanks to the discovery of a previously unobserved functionality in a material

called molybdenum ditelluride.

A new functionality in a two-dimensional material

Page 7: DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING …jssateb.ac.in/.../02/Enews-letter-Volume-3-Issue-1-2018.pdf · 2019-02-01 · A Technical talk was organized by Information Science

The two-dimensional material stacks into multiple layers to build a memory cell that allows data

to be stored and retrieved much faster on a computer chip, saving battery life.

Researchers at Purdue University engineered this device in collaboration with the National

Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Chip-maker companies have long called for better

memory technologies to enable a growing network of smart devices. One of these next-

generation possibilities is resistive random access memory, or RRAM for short.

In RRAM, an electrical current is typically driven through a memory cell made up of stacked

materials, creating a change in resistance that records data as 0s and 1s in memory. The sequence

of 0s and 1s among memory cells identifies pieces of information that a computer reads to

perform a function and then store into memory again.

A material would need to be robust enough for storing and retrieving data at least trillions of

times, but materials currently used have been too unreliable. So RRAM hasn't been available yet

for wide scale use on computer chips.

Molybdenum ditelluride could potentially last through all those cycles. Molybdenum ditelluride

allows a system to switch more quickly between 0 and 1, potentially increasing the rate of storing

and retrieving information. This is because when an electric field is applied to the cell, atoms are

displaced by a tiny distance, resulting in a state of high resistance, noted as 0, or a state of low

resistance, noted as 1, which can occur much faster than switching in conventional RRAM

devices.Because less power is needed for these resistive states to change, a battery could last

longer.

In a computer chip, each memory cell would be located at the intersection of wires, forming a

memory array called cross-point RRAM.

"Logic," which processes data, and "interconnects," wires that transfer electrical signals.Logic

and interconnects drain battery too, so the advantage of an entirely two-dimensional architecture

is more functionality within a small space and better communication between memory and logic.

Millions of new memory cells could be part of a computer chip and save power for smart devices,

thanks to the discovery of a previously unobserved functionality in a super thin material.

Time Management and Productivity “I am busy, I don’t have time” is a common slogan used by most of the people today, specially the younger generation. The important point to be contemplated is everyone has 24 hours. The essential tip is

to learn from the winners who have achieved in their life in those 24 hours. Mr. Narendra Modi, Dr. A P J

Abdul Kalam, Mr. Mukesh Ambani, Elon Musk and the list of the winners go on. Don’t allow the smaller things to take your time. If you do so you will not be able to accomplish the

bigger tasks. Figure out the highest priorities and do your best to work first on those things that will take

you one step towards your goal. Once your goal-related activities are scheduled, then you can reschedule

all the other activities that are less important, but still you need to do it. That is what the winners do. You too can be a winner with proper time management.

To be more precise every day spent is a matter of seconds. Every morning 12:00 AM you are credited

with 86,400 seconds. Every night this account becomes empty. There is no option left for fixed deposit, withdraw or carry forward. It is left to you how to invest those 86,400 seconds efficiently. Managing

those seconds depends on your body clock. Each one of us comes with an in built body clock. The clock

tells you to act according to the body and change your lifestyle according to that. When the body is filled

Page 8: DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING …jssateb.ac.in/.../02/Enews-letter-Volume-3-Issue-1-2018.pdf · 2019-02-01 · A Technical talk was organized by Information Science

with energy, utilize that time. Put all your efforts when you are active.

There are three stages in your life: past, present and future. The past is for learning from experience to live well in the present and prepare for the future. Divide your time into high-output and low-output hours.

High-output hours are when you can do more in less time. The tips during high-output hours are:

1. Personal Discipline.

2. First things first. 3. Make a to-do-list.

4. Budget your time.

Remember 80% of your success comes from 20% of your activities. How does this work? There is a famous saying “Reap as you Sow”. It means what you do today is what

you get tomorrow. You reap what you sow in those 86,400 seconds. So what do want to sow? If you want

trust, sow honesty. If you want victory, sow perseverance. If you want success, sow hard work and

determination. Good time management leads to prosperity and bad time management leads to destruction says Chanakya.

Tips for Good Time Management:

1. Don’t postpone the work. 2. Time bound for planning.

3. Find out your high-output hours.

4. Prioritize and Focus. In a nutshell, “Fruits of labor are based on the choices you make through those 86,400 seconds”.
