It is a 10 minutes journey by bus and we reached there by 9: 40 AM. After finishing the formalities for the permission we entered into the substation premises. Mr A.V.K Acharayalu, Assistant engineer of the substation, he gave us the single line diagram of the whole substation. The diagram shows the areas which are under it and the equipment used in the substation.

Single line diagram of the substation

The major equipments are:

1. Bus Isolator 2. Circuit breaker3. Current transformer4. Line isolator with earth switch5. Wave trap or line trap6. Capacitive voltage transformer

Bus isolators are used mainly for maintenance purpose. This is mechanical switcheswhich isolate a part of circuit from system as when required i.e. for safe maintenance work.

Circuit breakers are switches which are used to interrupt during fault conditions.These are automatic interrupting devices that are capable of breaking and reclosing a circuitunder all conditions i.e. faulted or normal operating conditions. Its primary purpose is toextinguish the arc that is developed due to the separation of its contacts in arc extinguishingmedium.

A current transformer (CT) is a type of transformer that is used tomeasure alternating current (AC). It produces a current in its secondary which is proportionalto the current in its primary.

Line isolators with earth switch comes in operation during lightening, thundering, overloadedconditions. Wave trap operation is to cease the unwanted communication signals.

A capacitor voltage transformer (CVT or CCVT), is a transformer used in powersystems to step down extra high voltage signals and provide a low voltage signal, formetering or operating a protective relay.

He has shown us different conductors which are used in underground cables(MOOSE, PANTHER and ZEBRA) has also given the difference between overheadtransmission lines and underground transmission lines. In most parts of the world overheadtransmission lines are used as it is easy for maintenance, less installation cost, whereasmaintenance and installation cost is high for underground transmission lines.

This substation feeds power to different areas; those are Narsapuram, Razole, Taderu,Bhimavaram, Tanuku, Penugonda, Kovvada, Mogallu, Matsyapuri, Vendra, Veeravasaramand Undi.

After that we were taken to the control room, the employers monitor the substationmanually from there. It contains the equipments which indicate the real power, reactivepower, apparent power. The information about the incoming and outgoing power is alsoindicated. To this whole system to run a separate supply must be given for this a battery isconnected. About 110 batteries are connected in series each battery has 2V capacity.

We thank our department for providing us this wonderful opportunity .This visits will help us to a great extent in understanding the power distribution.
