Department of Economics (2018-19)
The Department of Economics, LBC organized several protuberant events in the academic year
2018-19. The economic society, Éparcus, conducted numerous guest lectures, two intra-college
events and several inter-college events in the annual economics festival BREAKEVEN’19
under the guidance of Ms. Sonica Singhi, convenor of the society. In addition, the department
(Dr. Ritu Suri as teacher-incharge, Ms. Uma as convenor and Ms. Ujjayini Roy as co-convenor)
successfully executed a week long „Faculty Development Programme‟ on „Research Methods
and Data Analysis Using SPSS & EVIEWS‟ in collaboration with IQAC, Lakshmibai College. A
brief report of these events is given below:
Éparcus, The Economics Society of Lakshmibai College
Intra-college maiden fixture, Mind your whistle was held on 24th
October, 2018 that
brought GK cum economics enthusiasts together and gave them a chance to prove their
mettle.
A guest lecture was held on 4th
January 2019 by Ms. Sweta Satya, an IES officer. She
enlightened the students on the role and working of the fifteenth finance commission.
Leaving no stone unturned, she held an interactive and thought provoking session with
the students.
The society, in collaboration with the Department of Food Technology and in association
with the Association of Food Scientists and Technologies (India) Delhi Chapter, invited
Major Dinesh Sharma, Co-founder of Academy of Pastry Arts & Enchante, on 23rd
January 2019. He conducted a thought provoking session with the students of the college.
A guest lecture by Prof. Neeraj Arora, PGDM IIM Calcutta, was held on 25th
January
2019. He shared his thoughts on the topic „Getting Ready for the Industry 4.0‟.
A guest lecture by Prof. Chirag Mehta, an Investment Banker, was held on 29th
January
2019. He conducted an interactive session with the students on the topic, “Career in the
field of Finance, Economics, Management and Data Science”.
A guest lecture on "Do what you love- Identify your passion” was held on 30th January
2019. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Ankur Kaushik. He enlightened students about
the true meaning of passion and how to amalgamate courage and hard work to make a
successful career.
BREAKEVEN‟19, the annual economics departmental fest of the society was organized
on 31st January 2019. Though it has never been less but this year it was even bigger and
brighter. There were six events beginning from a guest lecture by Mr. Surender Kumar
from Delhi School of Economics who shared his knowledge on the topic “Climate,
Global Economy and Policy”. He enlightened the students and faculty on the current
pressing issues.
The lecture was followed by several inter-college events listed below:
Bet you know it, a quintessential event putting economic cognizance and
gambling expertise to an unrivalled test.
Bid pool, where the students allocated their funds and became their own warren
buffet.
Auc-World, a not-so-conventional auction event with mind boggling riddles
putting everyone‟s wit to test.
Ecomania, a game of numbers, with money at stake and luck deciding your fate.
Carpe-Diem, a treasure hunt that brought out the Sherlock in people and closed
the deal just like Harvey.
Know-it-all, an event where you get a chance to either get heard or get hurt, this
event provided a platform for students to voice their opinions.
All the events and guest lecturers saw great response from the students. Excitements and
participation in large numbers kept the society motivated throughout the year to bring something
bigger and better for the hungry minds of budding economists. Prizes were won and battles were
lost but memories were made and great learnings learnt.
Faculty Development Program on “Research Methods and Data Analysis Using
SPSS & EVIEWS”, Nov 20-26, 2018 (with IQAC, Lakshmibai College)
The Department of Economics and IQAC, Lakshmibai College, University of Delhi organized a
one-week Faculty Development Programme on Research Methods and Data Analysis Using
SPSS & EVIEWS during November 20-26, 2018. The FDP was attended by 29 academicians
and researchers associated with various colleges and research institutions of repute from across
the country. The week long program was inaugurated with the lamp lighting under the esteemed
presence of the Chief Guest Professor Sangit K Ragi, Department of Political Science,
University of Delhi and our honorable Principal and Patron Dr. Pratyush Vatsala.
Resource person Dr. Syeedun Nisa from Jamia Hamdard University commenced the first
session of the FDP on the topic of Research Design. The next two sessions on Data Collection,
Sampling Techniques and Writing Research Proposals were chaired by Dr. Pankaj Kumar
Gupta, Professor in Centre for Management Studies (CMS), Jamia Millia Islamia University,
New Delhi. The following four days were chaired by Dr. Prabhat Mittal, an eminent scholar
with his post-doctoral from University of Minnesota (USA), doctorate in Management from
Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi, and currently an Assistant Professor
in Department of Commerce, Satyawati College (Evening), University of Delhi. He undertook
sessions on Introduction to SPSS, Tools of Analysis and Interpretation, Correlation and
Regression Testing of Hypothesis, Analysis of Variance, Case Study and Practice Session on
SPSS, Time Series analysis using EVIEWS. One vigorous session on Factor Analysis on the
fourth day was chaired by Dr. Ritu Bajaj, Registrar, Vishwakarma University.
The last day of the one week FDP was dedicated to group presentations by the
participants. The session was chaired by Dr. Alka Harneja, IQAC Coordinator, Dr. Lata Sharma,
NAAC Cordinator and Dr. Isha Chawla, senior faculty, Department of Economics. Some of the
topics included Modelling the gold prices, variation in wages by gender, poverty rates of five
different states of India. Participants were seen applying various concepts and methodologies
learnt on the previous days on their selected topics.
The week-long faculty development program concluded with a valedictory function with
Dr. Namita Rajput, Principal, Shri Aurobindo College gracing the occasion as the Guest of
Honor for the valedictory session. Dr. Rajput delivered a very informative lecture on
“Characteristics of High Quality Research”. Following this the participation certificates were
distributed to all the participants and certificates of appreciation were presented to the organizing
team. Further the participants were requested to share their experiences of the program. All of
them appreciated the way entire program was organized and conducted and the immense
learning opportunity the FDP offered them. The FDP concluded with a vote of thanks from the
Department.
