Preface

Founded as part of the P.G. Extension Centre of the University of Madras, the

Department of English is a near co-eval of the twin oldest Departments of Economics and

Mathematics, along with which it constituted the blastemic primordia for the emergence

of the other Departments and eventually, of course, Bharathidasan University in 1982.

From the beginning, the Department of English has been committed to the

functions of teaching, research, and teacher-training. This Department offers courses in

several areas of English Literature, newly emerging Literatures of other Nations, Literary

Criticism and Theory, Comparative Literature and Translation Studies, Applied

Linguistics, etc. Due emphasis is given for the acquisition of required knowledge and

development of skills. Remaining updated and quite alive to the growing significance of

the English Language and English Literature Studies in the wake of quality enhancement

and globalization, the Department constantly endeavours to introduce need-based and

thoroughly updated syllabi, student-centered learning activities, latest trends, techniques,

approaches and methodologies in the process of teaching, training, and guiding research.

The Department has hosted several international, national and regional

conferences, seminars, and workshops on English Language and Literature, Comparative

Studies and Translation Studies, Literary Theory and Criticism, Indian Writing in

English, and Canadian Literature, etc. Members of the Faculty have participated and

presented papers at International Conferences and Seminars abroad. They have also

published papers in reputed literary journals which are refereed, peer reviewed, and

approved by the UGC.

Program objectives

1. Introduce the researchers to the theory and practice of teaching of writing to develop their

individual pedagogy.

1. Acquire philosophical input in research by both formulating the hypothesis and resolving the

research problems though appropriate research strategies.

2. Imbibe the research culture through a scientific approach to English language and literary

studies.

3. Provide research ambience for frequent and extensive writing and develop the required skills

to produce quality publishable works.

4. Promote job oriented skills through appropriate implication of research methodology and

practical application of literary theories.

Eligibility

M.A. English: A candidate who is a graduate of this University or any recognized University with a

pass in B.A. English Literature.

Entrance examination will be conducted by the department for the applicants for 100 marks.

M. Phil. English: A candidate who is a graduate of this University or any recognized University

with the following qualifying Marks in Master's Degree:

i. 55% of marks / 5.51 of CGPA in the 10 point scale under CBCS or above

ii. 50% of marks or above for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/SC/ST/Differently Able

Entrance examination will be conducted by the department for the applicants for 100 marks.

Candidates who have cleared NET/SET are exempted from Entrance Examinations.

Ph. D. English: Candidates who have qualified for Master's degree (10 + 2 + 3 + 2 pattern or

equivalent in that order) of this university or any other university recognized by the UGC as

equivalent thereto with not less than 55% of marks or a CGPA of 5.51 in the 10 point scale under

CBCS.

Common Entrance examination will be conducted by the University for the applicants for 100 marks.

Selection Procedure

For MA & M. Phil English Programmes Selection will be made on the basis of merit list prepared

based on the Tamilnadu Government Reservation Policy.
