The event commenced with the Indian cultural ceremony of lighting of lamp followed by felicitation of Chief Guest of the day one Shri N. R. Narayana Murthy, Founder, Infosys and our guests by the Head of the Department. Prof. J. P. Sharma, former head of the Department highlighted the various achievements of the Department and recreated the memories of past Annual Commerce Convention specially those graced by great personality like Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India.

Shri Narayana Murthy deliberated on the theme of the Convention during his address in the inaugural session. He defined good Corporate Governance as maximizing shareholder value while ensuring that there is fairness, transparency, and accountability to every stakeholder of a corporate and that is customers, employees, investors, the government of the land and the society. Of all these, the most important stakeholder is clearly the society, as society contributes customers, society contributes employees, society contributes investors, society elects politicians, and society contributes bureaucrats. Therefore, those who aspires to lead a corporation in the path of good corporate governance has to remember that doing good to a corporation has to be in conjunction with doing good to a society. Shri Murthy also remarked one of the very powerful instruments to good corporate governance that everyone will have in their hands if they want to seek good corporate governance is to simply ask yourself before making any corporate decision whether that decision will enhance respect for you and respect for your company in the eyes of the society and that's when you will be following the best corporate governance principle and best corporate social responsibility. Indeed the topic of Convention was contemporary yet was attached to each distinguished speakers roots.
