The cautiously designed syllabus has considered the needs of students and the contemporary literary world that is a confluence of ancient and modern Arabic Literature, Language and Linguistics. The Department of Economics is one of the largestdepartments in the Faculty of Arts. It was establishedin 1950-51with the enactment of the University ofKarachi Act, at the old campus in the city and waslater shifted to its present location in 1960. ProfessorNewman Joseph Adams, an American national, wasappointed as the first chairman of the department.Due to its academic stance the department ofEconomics has the distinction of being recognized aspremier department in the country. Many of itsgraduates, have had secured key positions at variousnational as well as international organizations. It isbecause of these standards that the department wasaccorded with the honor of establishing a center ofnational capability in Economics by the name of“Applied Economics Research Center” through agrant by the Sindh Government.

The seminar library has a good collection of booksand periodicals related to Economics, Finance andTransport. In order to fill the gaps, an inter libraryloan facility is also available with other majorlibraries in the city, including the Dr. MahmoodHusain Library and the research library of the AERCthe University of Karachi, the department has twowell-equipped computer labs.

The Department of English was established in 1955.

Dr. Muhammad Ahsan Farooqui was the first head of

the department. The department was located in

Shivjee Murarji bulding in Nanakwara. Later in

January 1960 when the university move to its present

location, the department was housed on the first

floor of the Old Block in the Faculty of Arts. Prof. Dr.

Ahsan Farooqui was the first head of the department

of English. Prof. Dr. Ali Ashraf, Prof. Maya Jamil,

Prof. Dr. Muzaffar Hussain and Prof. Dr. Kaleem ur

Rehman were among notable chairpersons. The

Department offers Masters program in both English

Literature and Linguistics in the Morning as well as

Evening. Prof. Maki Kureshi is one of the

internationally reputed Pakistani English poet.

this field in Pakistan. More than 700 students are

Established as Department of Journalism in 1955

with a diploma course for working journalists it was

renamed as Department of Mass Communication in

1985. The department was established with an aim to

produce qualified and trained journalists and media

professional to cater to the growing needs of the

media industry. A full-fledged MA program replaced

the diploma program in 1962 to modernize media

education in the country.

The department has sufficiently equipped six

teaching and training labs. TV lab, News lab,

Advertising lab and two Computer labs. (one each for

Urdu and English). The department runs FM Radio

channel which provide a training base for the

students in radio broadcasting.

Students have wide job opportunities in the growing

industry including Media, Advertising and PR. Some

of the students conveniently find positions in private

sector FM Radio and TV channels and print media

even they passed out.

The Department of Persian was established in 1955with a view to provide facilities for advance studiesand research in the fields of Persian language andliterature with particular emphasis on the literatureproduced in the Indo-Pak subcontinent during thelast nine centuries and to familiarize the youngergeneration of this country with the history, languageand literature of Iran. Prof. Dr. Ghulam Sarwar wasthe founder Chairman of the Department.

The seminar library holds a stock of more than 5000books and 1500 journals. It also has a good number ofrare printed works, audiotapes and discs. Besides,the personal collections of the teachers, which exceed2000 titles, are also available to the readers withinthe premises of the department.

The department of Persian also arranges specialconversational classes, which aim at developing thePersian speaking power of the student with correctpronunciation and accent. The department hasrecently acquired necessary audiovisual equipmentfor this purpose.

The co-curricular program also involves seminarsand lectures delivered by renowned scholars ontopics mostly relating to Persian language andliterature. These programs aim at enhancingacademic capability and talents of the students.

The Department of Political Science was established

in 1952. It has since then initiated programs for

award of research degree of M.Phil and Ph.D. in

Political Science and its allied fields.

The Department of Political Science has been playing

an important role in the overall development of the

university. It has been the mother of the Department

of International Relations, Sociology and Public

Administration. At present the department is second

in the Faculty of Arts, after Economics, in terms of the

number of student enrolled.

The department has a fully functional seminar

library with over 2000 books. Most of the books are

recent publications in the subject in both English and

Urdu. The library also offers dailies, periodicals and

research journals for reading to its students.

Moreover, three is a well equipped specialized library

with latest books and periodicals in all the areas

relevant to Public Policy. The Library maintains a

reference section which has a reasonable collection of

books for ready reference. Thus the library provides a

very supportive environment for research activities.

The Computer Lab is equipped with high speed

computers, printers and scanner facilities. These

computer are networked with a server and a stand by

server. Audio visual aids including multimedia

option are used during presentations / lectures.

Internet access is also available to the students.

Global Politics, Political Economics, International

Relations, Comparative Politics, Islamic Political

System, Government and Politics of Pakistan,

Western Political Theory, Foreign Policy Theory and

Practice with reference to India, USA, UK, China and

the Muslim Countries.

In addition to teaching and research positions in

academic settings, Political Science degree holders

are prepared for careers at all levels of government as

well as journalism, International Business,

International Risk Analysis and Political Campaign

Organizations their skills of surveys and statistical

The Department of Psychology came into existencein 1954 under the Chairmanship of Prof. Dr. QaziAslam. It gradually attached both students andteachers with the result that reaching and researchpsychologists like Dr. Haseen Uddin Zubari, Dr. S.M.Hafeez Zaid, Dr. Farrukh Z. Ahmed, Dr. Afzal Imamand Dr. M. Wasim led the department to its presentacademic heights. It has now become one of theleading Departments of the Faculty of Arts.

Since 1956, the teaching and practice of ClinicalPsychology has enjoyed popularity both amongstteachers and students of the department. Dr.Farrukh Z. Ahmed, the then chairperson, took activesteps to establish a separate institute of ClinicalPsychology.

The department’s teachers are also members of theSindh Psychological Association and the PakistanPsychological Association. They further act assubject specialists in the Provincial and FederalPublic Service Commission for the appointment ofteachers in colleges. Seminars, Lectures, Mentalhealth camps, Picnics, Students’ week, welcome andfarewell parties etc are arranged for the students sothat they remain updated with current happeningand also get a chance to take a break from studyschedules.

The department’s library has a collection of over 800books. this large collection includes latestpublications, journals, encyclopedias andmagazines. The department has six computers, fouroverhead projectors, multimedia, two screens, aprinter and a scanner.

Centre of Excellence for women’s Studies (CEWS),

University of Karachi, since the last 23 years has been

offering teaching and research facilities in a friendly

environment to prepare students to act as agents of

change. We are the first offer M.A. and M.Phil/ Ph.D.

degree programs in Pakistan along with BS 4 years’

and BA (Hons.) 3 years’ teaching in Women’s

Studies. We have an Evening Program for M.A in

Women’s Studies . Women’s Studies , an

interdisciplinary discipline, aims to make visible

women’s role and contribution towards building a

gender-bias free society for a holistic development of

Program Available

The Department was established in 2000. Master’s

Degree Program is available in this department. All

the students who have passed B.A. or Shahadat-ul-

Aliya from Wafaq-ul-Madaris and other Madaris are

eligible for admission. Those candidates who have

done only Shahadat-ul-Aliya are required to submit

complete equivalence certificate issued by the

University of Karachi.

The research activities in the department are

remarkable such as:To write thesis on M.A. level is a part of research

activities.At least 50 Ph.Ds have been produced from the

establishment of this department in 2000.More than hundred students have been enrolled in

MS / Ph.D.

After passing M.A. there is vast scope in Schools,

Colleges, Universities, Madarsas as teachers, as well

as in other National and Multinational institutions as

Shari’ah experts.

commerce has brought a change in its curriculum

Karachi University Business School (KUBS) was

established during 1999-2000 because Institute of

Business Administration (IBA a constitute of

University of Karachi) was declared autonomous

degree awarding institution.

KUBS within short period of eight year has become a

well established institution with good reputation and

high image in the business world. MBA (Banking and

Finance) two year professional program is also run

jointly with Institute of Bankers Pakistan (IBP).
