What you need to know

1. Student ID / Semester ticket It is recommended that you carry your student ID / semester ticket with you. Using your semester ticket allows you to travel with trams, busses and trains in Kassel as well as to cities depicted at the back side of your semester ticket.

2. University of Kassel account, Moodle and Multifunction Card Once we have fetched your student ID and semester ticket you can go to the IT Service Center to activate your University Kassel account. This allows you to access your grades online, to access Moodle (our learning platform with all relevant learning materials) and to receive email via your University email address. Moreover, you will need to order your multifunction card that you will need to borrow books and to pay for copies.

3. Alien Department for Visa (Ausländerbehörde) Earlier you received your 3 months visa to come to Germany. Within these 3 months you need to renew your visa for the time period of your studies. There is a visa office at the University providing the service necessary. Make sure to have the following important documents: • Student ID, • Valid Passport • Biometric Photos • Registration Letter (from city hall) • Proof of Health Insurance • Proof of holding a bank account

4. Orientation Week

We strongly recommend to participate in the Orientation Week. This week allows you to get acquainted with the University of Kassel as well as with the city of Kassel. Moreover, it is a nice opportunity to get to know other international fellow students. What has been enjoyed quite much is the final trip to Goettingen, a nice city nearby Kassel. The orientation week is free of charge, though, you have to sign up in advance.

4. Student Union If you have booked a room in one of the student halls and you are lucky enough to get a room, you will need to visit the student union to sign the contract and get your room keys. 3. Registration at the city hall (Rathaus) It is mandatory to register in the city you live in with your full address. You need to bring your house/room contract and your passport. The registration is free of charge.

4. Opening a bank account You need to have a bank account where you can receive your money and conduct others transactions. We recommend the Commerzbank in the city center, which is a solid bank and well accessible for customers. Moreover it is free of charge for students. To open an account you need to bring your registration letter provided by the city hall, your passport and your student ID.

5. Mobile phones Prepaid-cards are available at diverse stores. We recommend the mobile shop O2, which offers well-priced and flexible conditions. Surely, you may also sign up for a plan.

6. Using the campus Internet “eduroam” To use the internet at the university you need to connect to the University of Kassel’s eduroam. The assistants at the IT Service Center at the Holländischer Platz will set up this connection within short time. Have your notebook and student ID with you. 8. Markets for Halal food

There are many shops in Kassel where Halal food is available. These shops will be pointed out.

What you have to bring to Germany Important documents: Make sure to bring the following important documents…

• certified copies of awarded academic degrees • certified copies of academic transcripts of records • certified copies of school leaving certificate • certified copies of job reference or attestation of employment related to

renewable energies in English • proof of English proficiency: TOEFL or IELTS • proof of health insurance

… if you do not have presented these documents during application procedure to uni-assist yet. Note, that it will not be possible to hand out the student ID without these documents. We will be pleased to assist you with the steps necessary.

• And have some cash money with you for the first days in Germany.
