By Terry Beigie You have probably heard the saying that if you smile the whole world smiles with you. It’s amazing that this feature can make such a dramatic difference in your outlook—and those around you. For those who aren’t confident in their smiles they might hold back, which is a true shame. This is where Dr. Jay Knight DDS in Charlottesville comes in. Knight—and his teams at Charlottesville and Spring Creek Family Dentistry— offer a one-stop shop for oral health. The locations offer gen- eral dentistry, pediatric den- tistry, orthodontics, oral sur- gery and implant dentistry. “In the past you were sent somewhere else,” Knight says. “My vision was to cre- ate a state-of-the-art facility where all of a person’s treat- ment could be provided in one practice.” Knight purchased the Charlottesville location from his father in 2004—a practice deeply rooted in the community after opening in 1960. He opened Spring Creek Family Dentistry in Louisa County in 2009. “I knew that Zion Cross- roads was going to be an ex- ceptional growth area. I also knew that there were no other dental health care providers in this area. This area really serves the counties of Albe- marle, Louisa, Fluvanna, Or- ange and even Goochland,” Knight says. “We had many patients from these areas who were driving all the way to our Charlottesville office for dental needs. Folks who reside in these areas were having to drive to Charlot- tesville, western Richmond and even Culpeper for treat- ment by an oral surgeon, or- thodontist, periodontist and pediatric dentist.” Now those in that region have high-tech oral health- care in one location. “No other practice in our area can offer all of these services in one location,” Knight says. In recent history the link between overall health and oral health has been clearly established. “We’re not just interested in teeth and cavities,” he says. “We’re interested in the whole per- son—everything about our patients’ health.” Knight notes that those who have Type 1 or 2 Dia- betes are more likely to de- velop gum disease. “That’s because they may have a decreased ability to fight bacterial infections, includ- ing those that occur in the mouth. Serious gum disease can make it more difficult for people with diabetes to control their blood sugar,” he says. As well, Knight says, pregnant women with seri- ous gum disease may de- liver prematurely. Also, gum disease may increase risk of heart attacks and strokes. “Researchers are inves- tigating the links between gum disease and cardiovas- cular disease,” Knight adds. “One potential link is that inflammation in the mouth increases inflammation in other parts of the body, in- cluding the arteries. This in- flammation may play a role in heart attacks or strokes.” So, what can you do to protect your oral—and over- all—health? Knight offers these tips: • Brush at least three times a day. You can never brush too much. • Use floss. • Use a daily mouth rinse with fluoride. • Be diligent about twice- yearly cleanings if you’re healthy. For those who have a periodontal condition it might be every three to four months. • Bring children to the dentist around age 3 to intro- duce them to the dental team. “We make all visits as fun as possible,” Knight says. “It is also good not only to get the children in for educa- tion about how to take care of their teeth, but also very important for parents to un- derstand nutrition, brushing and flossing as well.” Knight notes that nutri- tion plays a key role in over- all oral health. “Foods and drinks that are high in sugars increase the risk of dental de- cay,” he says. This includes soda, as well as juices and sports drinks. Knight and his team can handle any dental treat- ments, including Invisalign Orthodontics (clear brace alternative) and comprehen- sive implant dentistry. Comprehensive implant dentistry, Knight says, is be- coming the standard of care in tooth replacement. This is when a titanium replace- ment for the root of the tooth is implanted in the jaw and a crown is attached to the implant after healing. “This is the best thing to do to re- place one or more missing teeth,” he says. “When we lose teeth we also lose bone and our jaw lines change be- cause of it, but the implant replacement stimulates the bone growth prevent- ing such bone loss.” Using a high-tech 3-D cone beam x-ray called an I-CAT, the doctor can get a 3-D image of the patients’ head to ana- lyze the quantity and quality of the bone there and using design software can create a surgical guide for exactly the right spot for the implant. Patient education is very important to the staff, as well. “We take extra time to be sure all of our patients under- stand their dental conditions, how to have better overall oral health that translates into better systemic health and all of the treatment op- tions available for their den- tal conditions,” Knight says. Knight and his staff work very hard to make patients feel as comfortable as pos- sible and develop relation- ships with each patient. “Our dental team does an excellent job of making peo- ple who have a high level of anxiety feel very comfort- able with the treatment they will receive,” Knight says. “We are here to help all of our patients with their den- tal conditions. My teams at both offices make every one of our patients feel like they are part of our family. The staff is very, very person- able. They care about each other, they care about their profession and they care about patients.” Dentist Offers Comprehensive Practice in our Community Paid Advertisement OFFERING TWO CONVENIENT LOCATIONS TO MEET ALL OF YOUR DENTAL NEEDS Located at Zion Crossroads across from Wal-mart Supercenter 34 Jefferson Court, Zion Crossroads John H.
