Integration of Esthetic Dentistry and Prosthodontics Friday, March 23, 2012

Course No: ES030-12 CDE Credits: 6Location: University of Toronto Centre for Continuing Dental Education

1440 Don Mills Road (Kern Road entrance)

COURSE OUTLINE

Dentistry that is esthetic to the patient is an important clinical objective. The knowledge within dentaltechnology, dental science and dental practice has dramatically expanded leading to better quality;artistry and more standards based clinical applications. Ceramics are the most consistently pre-

dictable esthetic dental material. Today dentists can offer more treatment options for patient’s complex problems.Metal-ceramics continue to be the “state of the art” and profoundly affect prosthodontic care but the singlephase or monolithic all-ceramic materials have become increasingly more popular and do not chip as do all bi-layered ceramic materials. These types of dental ceramic materials will dominate the market and future devel-opment brings with it more long-term success.

This presentation will provide:• A comprehensive look at failure modes and effects in bilayer all-ceramic crown-cement-tooth systems, tying together the influences on resistance to fracture initiation and propagation of ceramic material properties and thickness.

• Crown/tooth geometry.• Cement modulus and layer thickness.• Damage induced by shaping, fabrication, clinical adjustments, and sandblasting.• Fatigue in the wet intraoral environment.

Some counter-intuitive findings will be addressed including changes in fracture behavior with different geom-etry and the in fluence of the compliant cement layer beneath stiff cores. Original research will be presented that studied the clinical behavior of over four thousand all-ceramic

restorations. Prosthetic techniques will be discussed utilizing newly developed ceramic gingival material anddesign for fixed prosthodontics.

TUITION* (includes continental breakfast, lunch and breaks)

Prior to Mar. 9, 2012 After Mar. 9, 2012Dentists: $495 $515 (Dentist tuition fee includes the IPS e.max Cementation Kit)Dental Team: $125 $125

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. To understand what factors and concerns a prosthodontist would havetreating patients that require “esthetic procedures”.

2. To understand the controversies that exists with modern dental materials.

3. To understand what clinical factors impact on long term survival ofdental ceramic materials.

4. To understand the restoration of dental implants in complex conditions.

Legislative Update: When will dentists be able to purchase, install and use small field-of-view cbCT?The Standard of Practice was passed by RCDSO on April 18, 2011. In late May, 2011 the government of Ontario also passed this standardwhich essentially removed the government’s moratorium that was in place. The Standard requires that a dentist who wishes to have a smallfield of view cbCT have a Facility Permit from RCDSO. The Council of RCDSO has now passed a proposed by-law that outlines the FacilityPermit and the fee that will be charged for it and has circulated this proposed by-law to all of its members for comment. The Council will meetin March and a final by-law will be presented. Facility permits are expected to be available shortly after the RCDSO Council meeting passesthe final by-law.

COURSE SYNOPSIS

Oral & maxillofacial Surgeons typically engage in and represent the community standard in certain areasfor facial trauma, facial deformity correction, cancer surgery, reconstructive facial surgery, cosmetic facialsurgery, temporomandibular joint management and surgery, head and neck infections and the manage-

ment of other pathologies. However, the most fundamental, and important aspect of our practices remains the provi-sion of dentoalveolar surgery. Extracting teeth, draining abscesses, removing roots, performing biopsies and placing implants are the cornerstoneof our specialty. We also consider these skills to be at the cornerstone of practice for the general practitioner.Typically, referral to an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon is based on a number of issues which typically include, time

requirements, anesthetic concerns, medical issues, degree of difficulty, requirement of other medical services for patients, and often times due to fear or a poor past experience in treating certain scenarios. In some instances it isnot unusual for practitioners to completely eliminate even the simplest extractions from their practice due to practicepreferences or the busyness of the practice.

The course is intended for those who have shied away from performing surgical procedures due to previous diffi-culties or fears, but also for those who enjoy surgery but find that they need to strengthen certain areas and it is hopedthat this intensive, and focused course can clear up any misconceptions and alleviate any fears that you may have.We encourage dialogue with instructors and hope that you can pick up some “tricks” along the way.

Basically we hope to demonstrate how with proper diagnosis, treatment planning and the execution of proper basicskills that you will be able to consistently obtain better results, that will satisfy your patients and make your practicesmore complete.

These objectives will be dealt with by reviewing and refreshing the basic surgical concepts that are essential not only for simple surgical techniques, but also for advanced and more elaborate procedures. Through case presentations, hands-on animal laboratory exercises and video surgeries, theparticipant will receive a wide spectrum of approaches that should increase the confidence to tackle what at times may seem insurmountable ob-stacles.The essential components of the program will be covered over a two day period. An additional optional half day will be provided to a lim-ited number of participants during which simulated surgical procedures will be performed using surgical simulator models.
