Dental Health and LearningFerber Dental Group Staff Writer
According to the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center, dental-related illnesses cause a loss of more than 50 million school hours every year. For children from low-income families, the loss of school days and learning time is even more severe.
Missed school days are only one of the negative outcomes of poor dental health. Dental decay and early tooth loss also lead to problems with concentration, impaired speech, reduced self-esteem, poor social relationships, and an overall failure to thrive. Left untreated, tooth decay may lead to difficulties with speaking, eating, and other problems that extend into the adult years.
Some schools provide oral health and preventive services to students. Federal money available for dental care, prevention, and treatment most often is provided via programs such as Head Start and Early Head Start.
