DENSITY AND BUOYANCY
OBJECTIVE: to learn how to predict whether an object will float or
sink.

FLOAT OR SINK?
Why do some objects float and others sink?
The answer lies in the density of the objects and the density of the fluids they are placed in.
Density is the mass of a substance in one unit of volume. D = M/V.

VIRTUAL LAB
We will determine the density in g/ml of four solids and four liquids.
We will then make predictions about whether the solids will float in the liquids.

CONCLUSIONS
1. Which of the solids will float in the olive oil? Explain. Test this in the virtual lab.
2. Which of the solids will sink in mercury? Explain. Test this in the virtual lab.
3. What would happen if olive oil and water were poured together? Test this in the virtual lab.
4. What would happen if all four solids and all four liquids were mixed in the same cylinder at the same time?
