During the week I was privileged to be requested to attend a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Michael Cannon book “The Land Boomers”. Michael has a history with us that is so important. He came to us as his book distributor back in the 1990’s – It was the first time we had experienced a publisher wanting to comes to us for distribution. Yes, we sold thousands of his books like “The Roaring Days”, “The Hidden Face of the Great Depression” and then all those “Loch Haven” titles from Roy Farrell. Roy was a senior manager at both Rigby and Nelson before starting Farrells Bookshop in Mornington in the early 1990’s. Roy’s son, Andrew, joined us some years ago. I was also fortunate to reunite with Alison Forbes at the celebration. Alison was (or, it seemed to be) the preferred freelance book designer used by Ken Wilder and the publishers at William Collins in the 1970’s; landmark books like John Cotton's Birds of the Port Phillip District of New South Wales 1843-1849. We used our then StKilda road office as a workshop to physically dry 850 slipcases and insert the book into them in advance of that night’s book launch. For those who remember Alison informed me that Thelma Kirkbride is in good health as well; Thelma was a manager for one of the Little Bookroom in South Yarra when Albert Ullin had a presence in Toorak Road as well as Burke Road, Camberwell.

We are in the days, weeks of balancing the results from Christmas trading with the returns season in full swing; extra staff to process them and then what do we do with these excess books. Most of them come back in non-mint, non resaleable condition; what a waste as we all profess to be inclined toward a tint of green. Seriously it is an issue for us as we then have to go back to the publishers with our story of how we (and you) tried – however we did not attract consumer demand and the bookshops are not expandable warehouses. Our distribution agreements push to allow us to auto-pulp which at least means those returns are turned into paper pulp. Oh well. And then some of the books are still involved with very big media spends by the publishers, whilst our retail customer have pulled them for return there is still ongoing demand. A case in point are those wonderful Harriet Clare books – our current sales exceed our sales when we launched them. Our best results now come from the onliners who don’t have shelf-life cycles. I normally don’t go ahead with some of these brain snaps – we can re invoice this series if it means it extends the sale or return shelf life.

I got a rap over the knuckles for making a mistake last month to do with the closure of Booktalk in Richmond Victoria; I apologise to the people who have taken over the shop and will make a personal visit to say so. Not wanting to continue the saga of matches and despatches I will close by saying farewell to Volume 2 in Launceston, The Bookshop in Wagga and well done to Lee & John for Dymocks Chadstone. I also hope Birchalls finds a Bookish owner. Been a long time calling on that store back as far as when Norm Tilley SR was the MD and I had to explain we were closing the market at Collins Publishers all those years ago. Readings moving into a Shopping Mall – I wonder if this is a sign of the value of bookshops to Shopping Malls as we see many brands disappear from those same Malls. I read ASIC’s September 2015 quarterly statistics confirm the retail industry experienced a 9.8%increase in external administrations from the previous June 2015 quarter – despite us all enjoying the business of bookselling that retail environment is complex and highly competitive. I hope the SMH, Age and Fin Review redundancies don’t jeopardise the book review sections of these mastheads.

I read this item about the world’s most literate countries – worth a click over and it shocked me as seem to have our “literate” opinions perhaps misplaced if this report is correct. Someone else saw this as Jason Steger ran with it over the weekend.

Anna Fergusson runs a lab researching Huntington's disease at a prestigious Boston university. When her long‐standing grant is pulled unexpectedly, Anna finally faces the truth: she's 49, virtually friendless, single, and worse, her research has been sub‐par for years. With no jobs readily available, Anna takes a leap and agrees to spend a year monitoring a remote campsite on Turtle Island in Australia's Great Barrier Reef. What could be better for an introvert with shattered self‐esteem than a quiet year in paradise? As she settles in, Anna opens her heart for the first time in decades‐to new challenges, to new friendships, even to a new love with Tom, the charming, younger turtle tagger she sometimes assists. But opening one's heart leaves one vulnerable, and Anna comes to realize that love is as fragile as happiness, and that both are a choice.

A DROP IN THE OCEAN is a deeply moving novel about second chances and last hopes, about loving and letting go, and about the power in self‐discover.

Author InformationJenni Ogden grew up in a country town in the South Island of New Zealand, in a home bursting with books and music. Armed with NZ and Australian university degrees in zoology and psychology, she took up a postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked with H.M., the most famous amnesiac in history, before returning to an academic position at Auckland University. There, she immersed herself in clinical psychology and neuropsychology, as well as traveling extensively and writing about her patients’ moving stories in two books, Fractured Minds: A Case-Study Approach to Clinical Neuropsychology and Trouble In Mind: Stories from a Neuropsychologist’s Casebook. Jenni has had a love affair with the Great Barrier Reef since her twenties, when she spent summers on a coral cay rather like Turtle Island, tagging sea turtles. Ogden and her husband now live off-grid on a spectacular island off the coast of NZ, with winters spent traveling and at their second home in tropical Far North Queensland. When she is not writing or traveling, Jenni can be found on the beach—always with a book—or spending time with her family.

This Will Explain Everything

Jeff Duff is arguably the most flamboyant, creative and controversial entertainer Australia has produced. His musical gifts and fantastical androgynous performances parallel the artistry of David Bowie. While Duffo’s career kicked off in the 1970s, he continues to grow as an artist, creating new music and performing sell‐out concerts to this day. In his tell‐all memoir, dedicated to Bowie, Duffo shares his tales of life, love and rock‘n’roll, in what is a rollicking, entertaining read. From his childhood desire to wear a dress, to performing before violent London punk crowds, to being banned and arrested, and even his journey into the depths of despair, Duffo recalls all with flair and style.

From the Foreword by Molly Meldrum Jeff Duff once hosted Countdown dressed as a sausage. Unique is an over‐used word in showbiz. But Jeff Duff is unique. When I first met Jeff, he was wearing a wedding dress. That was just a usual day in the unusual life of Jeff Duff. He’s been arrested in Ballarat and outside Number 10 Downing Street in London, banned by Ray Martin’s Midday Show, appeared in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, and sung some unforgettable songs. And no man looks as good in a leotard. Flamboyant, eccentric, cheeky, charming … Jeff Duff is one of the greatest entertainers Australia has produced.

Cheese making is a wonderful adventure and very rewarding. Much like people who wish to make their own bread, grow their own vegetables or make their own wines and beers, many cheese makers know that you cannot replace the quality of handmade cheese with the mass produced supermarket cheeses available today. There is no doubt in my mind that the cheeses I can make myself at home are far superior to the commercially produced cheese at the supermarket. Plus, I can make various boutique cheeses at home which aren't readily available at the stores.Additionally, the importance of eating foods without chemical additives, artificial colourings and preservatives is growing, as the awareness of the negative effects of these non-food additives increases. As with other foods, when you make your own cheeses you control the ingredients and can guarantee that you are eating pure, whole foods and not some man-made synthetic product that you really should not be putting into your body in the first place. While there is a specific science to cheese making, it is also and art form and craft. The more cheese you make, the better you will get at it. Once you have mastered the basics, you can begin to experiment and create your own specialty cheeses to suit your own personal taste and the taste of your family and friends. There have been hundreds of different cheeses developed all over the world, over centuries of cheese making, by artisans who have added their own personal magic to the craft. These cheese makers have contributed to the creation of an incredibly rich culture of cheese making, benefiting both the cheese maker and the cheese consumer. You can now do this in your own kitchen, with minimum equipment, creating your own cheeses for every day consumption and special occasions.

Over 40 recipes for cheeses, yoghurt and kefir, on over 200 colour photo and information packed pages. This book is the culmination of over 25 years of home cheese making, and some intensive research to understand the science behind the art of cheese making. Directions for-10 Fresh, unripened cheeses-13 Hard cheeses-4 Stretched curd cheeses-4 Eye cheeses-2 White mould ripened cheeses-4 Blue mould cheeses-3 Washed rind cheeses-2 Goat's milk cheeses-Whey ricotta-a selection of other cultured products, such as Sour cream, Yoghurt & Kefir

Design

Author InformationSince 1988, Isthmus has pioneered the design of culturally meaningful, enduring and inspiring environments, in that time becoming one of New Zealand's leading design studios. Well known for an ability to make a positive impact across a wide range of project types, Isthmus's works of landscape architecture, urban design and, more recently, architecture have created vibrant new communities, healthy new ecologies, and built environments that are simple in their expression yet rich in authenticity, value and culture. Over the last three decades the practice has achieved some of this country's highest design honours. Michael Barrett is a writer and editor who writes predominately about New Zealand design and its impact upon the built environment. He is a former editor of Landscape Architecture New Zealand, Interior, Prodesign and has contributed to a number of other publications.

The List of Last Remaining proves Louise Nicholas to be a poet of generosity, wit and wisdom. In poems which range from childhood dreams and disappointments and the fraught joys of family life to an Israeli kibbutz, love, laughter and unlikely encounters, we are regaled with narrative surprises, racy details and exuberant metaphors. The pervasive humour and leaps of imagination are tempered by Louise’s emotional and verbal precision and her poised acknowledgement of loss as well as grace.  ‐ Jan Owen

‘I choose laughter,’ Louise Nicholas writes in the last poem in her new book, ‘because it joins the dots,’/allows us to find the sense in senseless,/connects us all to the last.’ Her carefully thought‐through, closely focussed autobiographical poems do all of that and more, whether they choose laughter, sadness, wonder, love, or joy. ‐ Peter Goldsworth

Author InformationLouise Nicholas was born in Port Lincoln, South Australia and currently lives in Adelaide. She was a teacher for many years and still teaches part time as a relief teacher. A collection of her poetry, The Red Shoes, was published by Wakefield Press and Friendly Street Poets as part of their ‘New Poets’ series. She was co-author, with Jude Aquilina, of WomanSpeak, also published by Wakefield Press. A chapbook, Large, was published by Garron Publishing. Louise has also published three chapbooks of humorous verse. She was an editor, with rob walker, of Friendly Street Thirty. Louise’s work has been published in literary journals, magazines and anthologies and has been included in three Best of Australian anthologies. She has been a guest speaker and reader at many festivals, conferences and community events. One of her proudest achievements was at the Canberra Spring Poetry Festival where she was on the affirmative side of a rhyming verse debate: that Poetry is Better Than Sex. The debate was declared a draw; however, one of Australia’s better known poets was heard to announce that she was ‘going home for a quick poem’, so the result would seem otherwise.

'Of course you'll take a gun,' they said to me when I left Melbourne, 'even if it's only one of those little mother‐of‐pearl things the vamps used to carry in their evening‐bags. Apart from wild blacks there will be crocodiles, and Malays running amok, and men that haven't seen a white woman in thirty years. There might be three hundred miles of desolation on a truck with a drunken Afghan, and you’ll be alone in the night‐time, in those pearling‐towns of sand and sin, with a half‐caste woman keeping the shanty‐'

'Yes,' I reflected, 'I had better take a gun.'

So begins Ernestine Hill's great journey in and around the heart of Australia, the tale of a decade of travelling across and around the continent in the 1930s, accompanied by her young son Robert. This "strange otherwhereish creature with big beautiful eyes" as Katherine Susannah Prichard has noted, collected the tales of the making of the Territory as a centrepiece, allowing the world at large a chance to travel in the mind through the complexity, duress, and larrikin nature of an Australia‐in‐the‐making.

An Australian travel classic.

Dear Patrick

Fanatical about family history, Janice Prest wants to leave something behind for future generations; something more than faded photographs and certificates dealing with births, marriages, and demises.This beautifully written and eloquent autobiography, in the form of letters to her grandson, is a candid summary of Janice’s experiences in her formative years and later on her involvement in breaking down social barriers. She tells with honesty and humour of life for a young baby‐boomer woman enjoying the freedoms and challenges that were once the preserve of young Australian males.

Author InformationStyle, beauty and good health have always been part of my life. My interest began in the late 1940s when, as a child, I watched with fascination my glamorous musician grandmother go through her complicated daily hair and beauty routine. And I was full of wonder observing her preparations for an evening piano performance. As a student, a teacher, a young married woman and mother, and a businesswoman, my interest in fashion, health, fitness and beauty has lasted for six decades. For the past 30 years our family business has dealt in antiques – including jewellery, so it was important for me to look stylishly understated whilst working. I loved rising to that challenge every day.I now live a life of retirement spending time with family and friends, traveling and adding to my personal collection of vintage fashion. I continue to keep up with the latest developments in the world of health and beauty. My writing style is intimate and friendly, chatty and lighthearted. Not always politically correct. Lots of references to my own experiences and observations. It is easily read and not wordy. Ideas suggested are sensible, affordable and rely on commonsense. Lots of dot points, headings, top tips and step-by-step procedures.

Too Afraid to Cry is a memoir that, in bare blunt prose and piercingly lyrical verse, gives witness to the human cost of policies that created the Stolen Generations of Indigenous people in Australia.It is a narrative of good and evil, terror and happiness, despair and courage. It is the story of a people profoundly wronged, told through the frank eyes of a child, and the troubled mind of that child as an adult, whose life was irretrievably changed by being tricked away from her family and adopted into a German Lutheran family.What makes this book sing is not only Ali Cobby‐Eckermann's strong and unique narrative voice and her ability to cut to the essence of things in her poetry, but also the astounding courage with which she leads the reader through the complex account of a life in free‐fall and a journey to wholeness through reconnection with her birth family and its ageless culture and wisdom.This is a brave book, written by a woman who has faced her demons, transformed her suffering into a work of art, and found her true sitting place in the world.

It takes vision and fortitude to transform 'wilderness' in the Murrumbidgee basin into something of the eminence of Deltroit, one of the finest grazing properties south of Sydney. Who was it that achieved this, how was it done, and why did this iconic Riverina property, about which nothing has ever been published before, end up in the hands of King Ranch, Texas, a giant in global beef production? What is it about Deltroit that continues to seduce and set the benchmark in modern pastoralism?

When Nicola Wynn, a former solicitor born and bred in London, married Anthony Crichton‐Brown, Chief Executive of Lumley Insurance, she knew he owned a large farm in New South Wales but never dreamt that it would become their marital home. Within a short time, however, she was to exchange a hectic life in the metropolis for the isolation of rural Australia. Having negligible experience of country life anywhere, she faced the challenge of making a new life in a completely different environment from the one she knew. More importantly, this move coincided with the worst drought in New South Wales for a hundred years and, possibly, since the beginning of white settlement.

Finding some parallels between her own situation and those which she imagined must have faced the original pioneering family at Deltroit, she began to discover the history behind the gilded cage that had become her home. In doing so, she found a way into the heart of the community and a connection with the land that she never thought

Jodie's Rescue

The slap of spray on her face, the exhilaration of the boat cutting through waves, the call of the sea birds and the summer sun warming her skin...

Through all the challenges - starting a new school and making new friends, and a father who is absorbed in his work, missing her mother - Jodie finds solace in sailing. But will the ocean turn against her?

Can she save the lighthouse from development? And why are there dead penguins floating in the water? Who is the girl in the photo that she finds hidden under the stairs? And, most importantly, where is her mother?

Jodie's voyage of discovery takes her to a place she never dreamed she'd be... But how will she convince her father that it is real?

The Mighty Mullygrubber Malone

The 'mullygrubber' is part of cricketing folklore: a ball only delivered by accident, shooting along the ground after hitting a crack in the pitch. But one bowler, Mullygrubber Malone, has learned to do it on purpose - and being the only one who can, is now the most dangerous bowler in the world.

The Mighty Mullygrubber Malone is the story of a twelve-year-old leg spinner who goes all the way from being part of the school team to the Australian Test XI in one summer. Precious creatures, leggies. With them, Grubber beats schoolyard bully Bumper Barnes to a place in the NSW Under-12s side. Ditto for the Australian Under-14s. Grubber then rockets through the age groups for the local club, the Barrenjoey Bugles. Being too good for the Under-15s, Grubber is thrown into the Under-17s, then the Under-19s - still too good. Then comes grade cricket against the men, with Grubber becoming the 'man of the match' in fourth grade, third grade, second grade... and first grade.

Fresh on the heels of Michelle Payne's historic Melbourne Cup win, comes a blockbuster Australian story about a Queensland girl and the 'race that stops a nation' . . .Tully Athens has always dreamed of following in the footsteps of her hero Michelle Payne. Of living up to the Athens name and becoming the third generation of women from her family to rule the track. But Tully’s never been sure she’s got the nerve, and when her mother is killed in a racing accident, her whole world is shattered.Six months later, in the heat of a Queensland summer, sixteen‐year‐old Tully is ready to face her fears. But getting back in the saddle leads to a whole lot more than she bargained for, with an out of control crush on the boy from their rival thoroughbred farm – the gorgeous but cocky larrikin Brandon Weston – and a forgotten filly with stardom in her eyes . . .When faced with the most difficult decision of her life, will Tully choose to train and race her new filly in Melbourne? Or will she sacrifice it all to fight for love on the land that feeds her soul?It’s only when tragedy rips everything from her that Tully finds a strength and courage she never knew she had, in this action‐packed novel of passion, adventure and determination.

Misfortunes are an unavoidable part of life, but what if they are the result of something more than just bad luck and poor decisions? When Michael and Patrick become unlikely friends after meeting in a boys' reformatory, they have no idea that the tragedies that had plagued their families for generations aren't so wholly unrelated. When Avianca, a Fynian princess, materializes in front of Michael to uphold the faeries’ end of an ancient deal struck between his ancestor and one of her people; neither Michael nor Patrick's lives will ever be the same again. After all, meeting your soul‐mate doesn't guarantee you'll live happily ever after. A Fable’s Origin: Fynian Encounter is the prequel to The Fynian Fable series.

Author InformationBeing born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia, demanded Yalmact to develop an overactive imagination in order to tolerate the city's dreary atmosphere. A twisted sense of humor enabled Yalmact to survive a series of dead‐end jobs and difficult life events while penning the Fynian Fable saga. Often escaping reality into a wide variety of written works by remarkable authors such as Stephen King, J.K Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkien, enable Swillirs to develop their own unique voice and writing style. Had these elements not been present and Yalmact had not taken up writing, it is in all likelihood that Swillirs would have thrust their head into a cement wall to escape the monotony of their life.

The Disappearing Sister What do you do when someone you care about is hurting, when their behaviour is making it worse? How can you help them if you are the youngest and one is listening? This book tackles the tough topic of eating disorders and how a family has to work together to help the big sister get better. Eva loves her big sister very much. Anna is clever and smart and fun. But one day Eva tices that her sister is staring to behave differently and that she seems unwell. Eva wants to help but doesn't kw what to do. So she confides in her friend Jennie who helps her find a way to help her sister. A moving yet hopeful account of a family working together to help a loved one recover their health.

Author Information“The Elephant in the Room” series deals with tough health and wellbeing issues through the eyes of a young child. The purpose of the series is to help explain difficult health topics to younger children who made be going through tough times within their families as well as to empower them in seeing their role in the whole recovery process. My debut picture book in this series is called “The Disappearing Sister”. It is about Anorexia Nervosa and the impact this illness has on a family told through the eyes of the younger sibling of a sufferer. It takes the reader on the journey of illness and recovery sharing both a message of hope and an age-appropriate explanation of what is going on in a family where there is an eating disorder sufferer. It covers a topic traditionally stigmatised and poorly understood as well as giving voice to those who are often the silent sufferers in the family – namely the younger siblings. This is breakthrough literature in the area and is being used by practitioners to help their clients and their families come to terms with the impact of the illness on the family and to help provide a means of starting important and tough conversations with the younger family members. The book is for use as a tool that might help start or direct conversations around the topic both at home and in the classroom.

Two Tales of Brothers from Ancient Mesopotamia

The ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia, located in what is now Iraq, Syria and Kuwait, produced one of the world's great heroic sagas, the Epic of Gilgamesh.In this exciting, lively retelling, popular author John Heffernan brings two stories from the Epic to engaging life for young readers, while new illustrator Kate Durack's striking illustrations, inspired by Ancient Mesopotamian art, superbly illuminate the mythical world of the heroic brothers.

John Heffernan is a well‐known, award‐winning Australian author who has written for children and teenagers in a variety of genres and styles, from picture books to young adult novels, reality to fantasy.Born and raised in Brisbane, artist and illustrator Kate Durack lived and worked in Sydney and Malaysia before moving to the regional NSW town of Walcha, where she now lives. Her work has featured in several exhibitions. Two Tales of Brothers from Mesopotamia is her first picture book.

The Seekers

This is the world's first 'Enseeklopedia' ‐ a treasure trove of stories, music analysis and rare memorabilia.  Moreover, it is a long overdue salute to Australia's Fab Four and their enduring recording catalogue. In this publishing first, renowned Australian authors Christopher Patrick (ABBA: Let The Music Speak) and Graham Simpson (The Judith Durham Story ‐ Colours Of My Life) have joined forces to produce the first‐ever Seekers coffee table book ‐ an in‐depth and highly informative look at the recording history of Australia's first supergroup.

Their forensic analysis of every song The Seekers recorded in the 50 years between 1963 and 2013 sits comfortably with peeks behind the scenes, never‐before‐revealed facts, fascinating trivia, and a kaleidoscope of photos and memorabilia... much of it never seen before.

With a good tour guide, you see so much more when you know what it is you're looking at; Chris has approached The Seekers' song list from a musician's perspective, undressing every song the group ever recorded to reveal the vocal and instrumental craft at play. Graham has brought to the coffee table his penchant for fascinating Seekers minutiae, and an archive of memorabilia gathered from all over the world over five decades.
