EDITOR’S INTRODUCTION Hello everyone, There is lots of exciting news in this issue. As most people will know, the refurbished village hall is now finished and open for business – see photographs from the official opening on pages 4 and 5 – though there’s lots more that can be added of course! The Old Cowshed on the village green will be opening in early April with a café and a small shop called The Neathouse – see further details on pages 11-13. There’s a proposal to start a horticultural society (see page 15), as well as a date for the next plant sale (page 17). And there are district and local parish elections coming up in May, so if you’d like to be nominated to stand for the village Parish Council, find out how on pages 18-19. Our village personality for this issue is Danny Keating (pages 9 and 10), and we have a lovely remembrance of Don Keyes, who died at the end of last year, on page 31. Finally, with better weather in the offing, do please think about joining one of the many sporting activities in the village - see pages 27 and 31. We have great facilities and you will enjoy using them!

Re-launch party on 1st March 2019

What a delight it was to be part of the launch party for the newly refurbished hall on 1st March. There were over 200 people there, perhaps the largest gathering in the village for many years, so it was a significant moment. Everyone felt what a special occasion it was and we are delighted so many came to celebrate with us.

Stephen Burroughes, our honoured guest, gave an excellent speech and then handed the microphone to Susan Warren who had opened the hall when she was 11 years old in 1985, 31 years ago. She in turn handed the scissors to young Oliver Steward, who, after saying ‘I now declare this hall open’, cut the ribbon to much clapping and enjoyment from the audience. Below and opposite are some images of the event, thanks very much to Peter Archard and Sam and Dawn Steward.

for our new Hall, ideally someone who is retired

and lives locally, seeking something really

worthwhile to do. Generally a voluntary role, but

if an income is required, please come and talk

to us. Call 01728 638627

There is still much to do….

We need a blackout blind for the large north window, some new

tables and chairs for both the big hall and meeting room, a sound

and cinema system with a 4.5 to 5 metre screen and we need to

tidy up the top end of the car park and put a plastic mesh down

and fill it with topsoil so that grass grows through so that it looks

better and is still available for excess parking. This all needs

funding.

So what would you like to see happen in the Hall?

We currently have pilates, puppy training, badminton, the

Cornerstone Church, WI, the chamber orchestra, diabetes

prevention and more to come. What else appeals to you? If you

have something in mind, and you know someone who runs it, let us

know and we will see if we can encourage them to come to

Dennington. If you wish to set something up, come and chat to us.

We will do what we can to assist you.

We really do need input and involvement from as many of you as

possible to make this work - I know that it might seem as if there is

no time to do this, but the reality is it’s a choice. Give it a little

thought. As a friend once said to me, “It is time to take the joy of

moving even just one life forward, knowing that each one cascades

out in a powerful affect that will make a difference.” Think of our

community, our young and old people

and what we can achieve together.

VILLAGE PERSONALITIES: DANNY KEATING

Born in 1937 in the tiny hamlet of Kilroe (‘red church’) in Southern Ireland, Danny was the ninth of sixteen children, his father a well educated baker of firm discipline, his mother ‘a tolerant saint’. Their three-bedroom cottage had no hot water and ‘a bucket and chuckit’ system of sanitation. As a youngster, Danny read voraciously and had a keen love of Irish folk music. With poor health, Danny missed out on formal schooling and, at 14, joined his father in the bakery in a hard, four-year apprenticeship.

In 1955 Danny left for London by boat against the wishes of his father, who hoped he would continue the family business. He found himself in Kennington, at the heart of an Irish community but with no plans. He eventually found a small bakery who offered him a position which helped get him started, and also worked as a milkman and a dishwasher at the Cumberland Hotel at Marble Arch, to help pay the bills.

In 1959 he moved into social work, specializing in mental health, training as a nurse at Claybury, then the largest psychiatric hospital in the country. Enoch Powell visited the hospital whilst Danny was there and announced the closure of all mental hospitals in England, a policy which later proved to be disastrous. After 4 years’ training, Danny moved into the mental health side of local government. Further training as a social worker in psychiatry led to a specialization in schizophrenic disorders.

Now married, with three daughters, Danny moved to Oxford, then Didcot and finally to Norwich, where he worked at City College as a lecturer in social studies for adults and arranged supervised placements for his students. A CAMRA aficionado, Danny wasted

Page 10: Dennington Newsdenningtonvillagehall-sportsclub.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/... · on pages 11-13. There’s a proposal to start a horticultural society (see page 15), as well

little time in developing his taste, and thirst, for Adnams bitter!

In the mid 70s, Danny’s life took a new direction when he moved to a family smallholding in Cornwall, complete with cottage and 20 acres. The venture ultimately proved economically unviable, and Danny found himself applying again for social work. He was accepted at St. Audrey’s in Woodbridge in 1980, a former Victorian workhouse and later asylum, fit for 600 but actually housing 1,400. Danny worked with a group of psychiatrists and prepared mental tribunal reports for the mainly long-term inmates, who lived in 120 acres of ground. He stayed at St. Audrey’s until it closed in 1996.

Danny took early retirement and, in 1994, came to live in Old Forge Cottage in Dennington, a 1525 property on The Street next to the smithy which boasted mullioned windows and large cross beams and was originally thatched. Danny met new partner Pene Welham through a dating agency; as a music teacher and an accomplished cellist herself, Pene shared Danny’s love of music. They have cycled widely together and played folk music in many of the local pubs, especially around the settle at the Low House in Laxfield.

With Danny as Chairman and Pene as Secretary the couple were instrumental, in 2009, in establishing the Dennington Allotments Society. With Adrian Neil’s help they laid out 17 plots, set up a committee of interested members, involved the National Allotments Association, bought in seeds and manure, and held an annual social for all members and their families. The Society has provided an opportunity for great social networking and countless hours of physical exercise and pleasure for many in the village, as well as fresh produce with zero airmiles!

When not armchair-bound supporting the Irish rugby team, Danny is still very active today: at the allotment, using his chainsaw for wood cutting, entertaining his many grandchildren, or simply enjoying a pint with some of the other village elders! Cheers!

THE NEATHOUSE

At the beginning of April the newly refurbished Dennington Cowshed will reopen as both a new office space for aboutmedia and a café and shop called The Neathouse.

Run by Sarah Clarke and Kathy Churchill, aboutmedia offers a range of services including marketing, copywriting, contract publishing and website design. As well as the aboutfram magazine, they also produce a range of visitor maps of Suffolk – Framlingham, Saxmundham, Aldeburgh, Woodbridge and A1120 to date – and a yearly pocket guide to the Suffolk Coast.

Sarah and Kathy are looking forward to being part of the village and have exciting plans. “This new office space really allows us to develop our business. It is an ideal venue and we hope to hold launch events, presentations and demonstrations and pop-up gallery events here. The office and café are separated by a sliding barn door so we will be able to open this up to form one larger integrated area. We are also creating a tourist information area where visitors can pick-up maps, flyers, etc.”

The Neathouse will be run by Vashti Mouncer, who has worked in

Page 13: Dennington Newsdenningtonvillagehall-sportsclub.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/... · on pages 11-13. There’s a proposal to start a horticultural society (see page 15), as well

catering for several years. It will be open 7 days a week offering breakfast, lunch, cakes and savouries.

The cafe will be a warm and welcoming place for local people and visitors alike. The menus will feature well-known local producers, ensuring there aren’t many ‘food miles’ and Vashti will support other local businesses. Offering a take away service and loyalty card system, it will be the place to come for good home cooked food that’s great value. The Neathouse will also feature a shop stocking essential items such as fresh bread, cheeses, pies, meats and homemade cakes. Vashti is also exploring lots of other exciting other ideas. These include: Meet up Mondays Sale of loose ingredients with refillable containers Vegetable stand selling surplus stock from the allotments Newspapers and collection point for parcels

The aim is for The Neathouse to become integral to village life – a

place for people to come and

make new friends or reconnect

with old friends. With everyone’s

support it will become part of

the community in Dennington

and Sarah, Kathy and Vashti look

forward to working with the

organisations already in place

such as the church, village hall,

school, pub and other social

clubs. They are also looking

forward very much to meeting

you all too.

NEW DENNINGTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

A random question over a cup of coffee sowed the seed for a possible new Society in the village, taking the opportunity of using the refurbished Village Hall.

Would you be interested in joining and supporting a Horticultural Society? The format would be a monthly meeting, with a presentation from an invited speaker, which would necessitate an annual subscription. The Allotment & Gardeners Association is supportive of this idea, and hopefully

those members would also be happy to attend meetings, in addition to sharing their experiences.

The Society would cover all aspects of gardening, flower and vegetable growing, landscaping, and display. Visits could be organised to appropriate places of horticultural interest, and if there was enough support, we could have an annual show. The scope is endless.

If you are interested in a Horticultural Society in the village, please could you let me know at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you.

POINTS OF VIEW PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION Points of View is an exhibition created by Chrissie Kitchen, Candy Blackham, Nick Eade and Geoff Moore, all photographers living in Cratfield who love to share those moments which capture their imagination, feelings and thoughts while peering through their viewfinders! Their first exhibition in April 2018 was a great success, with over 90 photo-graphs on show and more than 150 visitors. Points of View returns on 12 and 13 April 2019 with a completely new collection including many from Suffolk: street photography from Chrissie, landscapes from Geoff, wild-life photography from Nick and Candy’s highly ornate Brittany churches which provide such a contrast to the ‘cleaned’ churches of Suffolk. Entry to the exhibition is free but a raffle will support Halesworth Dementia Carers’ Fund and Macmillan Cancer Support.

The exhibition will be

DENNINGTON PARISH COUNCIL

The Parish Council has been busy in the last few months. At the main February meeting which was well attended by members of the public, the meeting heard a presentation from 2 Sizewell C employees regarding the infrastructure consultation needed to deliver the new power station. Councillors also discussed ongoing problems with highways, and received the information regarding forthcoming parish councillor elections. They heard from a member of the public that SCDC would not provide any signage for the ducks, so the decision was made not to pursue this any further. The meeting then considered the need for VAS (Vehicle Assisted Signs) again, and will gather more information for the May meeting. The Council has also met to consider a number of planning applications, together with holding a public meeting to discuss the proposal for the Laxfield Road site as contained in SCDC's Final Draft Plan consultation and formulating a response. The public meeting was extremely well attended (approx 60), and a number of views were expressed (details of the meeting can be found on the village website). SCDC's consultation period has now closed. Our next meetings are on May 13th which is the date for both the Annual meeting of the Parish, followed by the Annual General Meeting of the newly elected Parish Council. The annual litter pick takes place on Monday April 1st at 6pm meeting outside the Village Hall. Why not join us for one or all of these meetings?

Robert Wardley (Chair) Ruth Hart (Clerk)

Editor’s Note: While SCDC will not permit duck signs on their land, it would be possible to erect signs at suitable locations away from the public highway (preferably on parish land); this option was not pursued as there is no suitable Parish Council owned land available.

REPORT ON SPECIAL PC MEETING 4TH FEBRUARY

A special Parish Council meeting was convened on 4th February to consider the Final Draft of the Suffolk Coastal District Council’s Local Plan and specifically its Policy Proposal to allocate a site for a development of 50 dwellings outside the village boundary on Laxfield Road. Chairman of the Council, Robert Wardley, told the packed meeting that opinions expressed would be considered at their 18th February planning meeting to decide on the PC’s formal representations as part of the consultation process. Cllr. Matt Lunn made a detailed presentation explaining the background to the proposal and how residents could make their own representations to SCDC. Addresses were also made by District Councillor Christopher Hudson and the land owner, Cllr. Robert Rous.

In response a number of village residents raised concerns about the extension of the original site for 10 houses as proposed in 2014 and the consequent potential for traffic and sewage problems. There was also comment about the principle of extending the physical limits of Dennington and the effect on the natural environment and the historic nature of the village centre. It was also noted that SCDC have over-planned the housing allocations and that there was no necessity for Dennington to provide so many houses.

There was support expressed for the provision of extra - and particularly affordable - housing and a larger school playing field and drop-off area, whilst it was noted that a development could also benefit the school and generate CIL payments towards local services.

At the subsequent planning meeting the Parish Council agreed to propose a reduction in the number of dwellings from 50 to 30. Full details are available on the PC website: dennington.suffolk.cloud/parish-council.

What’s going on at Dennington Hall Farms?

We began the spring early, drilling all our spring barley in February. This is growing either side of the road north of Dennington Hall, and is a variety of barley called Planet which we hope will go for malting. Last year it went to Bairds at Witham and will have ended up in beer. Around the village this year we are growing sugar beet. We hope to drill this with a precision drill as soon as the weather allows, and each seed will be placed 5” apart. The sugar beet is about 17% sugar and is processed at Bury St Edmunds into Silver Spoon sugar; all will be lifted in late September. By growing spring crops we are trying to reduce the blackgrass which we struggle to contain in winter crops.

We plan to have an open evening in July for those who would like to look around the farm. If you ever have questions about the farm please contact Robert on [email protected].

Cookery Corner: Lamb curry

Easter is almost here and in my household it wouldn’t be Easter without a roast lamb. My personal preference is a shoulder slow roasted in the oven. I always buy a whole one so I can make this simple curry the following day, it’s especially a hit with my children who are 4 and 14. Ingredients Left over lamb (or any left over roast meat) 1 apple peeled and cored 1 celery stalk 1 onion 2 cloves of garlic 1/4 tsp dried thyme 1 small tin of tomatoes 1 cup of lamb or chicken stock 2 tbsp curry powder Salt and pepper to taste 2 tbsp butter Glug of cream Finely chop onion, garlic, celery and apple and put in a high-sided frying pan with butter. Cook for 5 mins or so until ingredients are soft. Add curry powder and cook for a short while then add tomatoes, stock and thyme and cook for a further 5 minutes. Put the liquid into a food processor or use a handheld blender to make smooth. Put back into pan and add cream. You can do this recipe without or as much cream as you like (my children prefer it with), you can also at this stage add more curry powder if you want it spicier, and season to taste. Add your cooked lamb and cook for 5/10 mins until it is heated through. Serve with rice.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

As we begin to get into the season of lighter evenings and warmer weather, it would be great to see more people make use of the Dennington tennis court. Tennis is a very versatile sport that can be very physically demanding but can also be played at a more leisurely pace and as a social occasion.

The court is situated next to the children’s’ play area, bowls green and the football pitch, with ample car parking facilities by the Village Hall. What better way than to relax and have fun and some exercise within a pretty village country setting, followed by a drink at the Dennington Queen afterwards? An online booking system makes it very easy to play whenever you have a spare hour or two.

The Annual fees are only: Family £40 Couple £30 Non-members £5 for 2 hours If you are interested in using this facility, please contact Avril Palmer on 01728

638686 or email [email protected].

OBITUARY—DONALD THOMAS KEYS

4th August 1932 - 17th December 2018

Born in Dagenham, Don was the eldest of two brothers. He spent his early life in Essex, leaving school at 14, followed (after a brief job) by National Service, spending two years in the RAF in Ceylon (Sri Lanka).

Many jobs in the insurance industry in London followed and he never had to look for one - he was always headhunted for the next! He left the city in 1985, moving to Southend before retiring in 1997.

Don married Leah in 1956 and had two children. Sadly this marriage broke up and sometime later he met Anne. They were married in 1971 and settled in Canvey Island. The couple moved to Dennington in 2001 and loved their time together here as part of our community.

Don was a handyman of note, building a house extension, refurbishing cars and constructing drama sets for Anne’s amateur dramatics adventures. They bought a static caravan in Dunwich and spent many summers there with family and particularly grand-children. Don was also a very keen fisherman, often going off

with his grandson Callum, who well remembers the fun they had together.

Anne and Don did much travelling together over the years and latterly, Don took up bowls in Dennington. Don was much loved and will be sadly missed by all. Kind donations raised £290 for St Elizabeth Hospice and £362 for the Alzheimer's Society. Thank you all so much.

SPORTS CLUB

Hello everybody,

The sports club is ready for spring. Once again I would really like to take this opportunity to invite the community to participate in any of the sporting activities we offer. If you are interested in bowling, badminton, tennis or children’s football I can provide you with the contacts you need to speak to. All activities are available and at such a low cost, it would be really fantastic to get some more involvement across the board. Either call me or drop me an email.

Last but not least, on Saturday 30th March 10 -12.30 the sports club will be holding a jumble sale. This follows on from the great success of last year. It would be great to see as many of you as possible turning up to raise money for the sports club.

Please contact me for further details about anything to do with the sports club: [email protected] / 07535 715253.

NEW FADS PRODUCTION: THE LADY IN THE VAN

Framlingham Amateur Dramatics Society (FADS) will be taking to the stage on the Easter weekend to perform 'The Lady in the Van' by Alan Bennett. There will be five performances, including an Easter Monday matinee.

As most people will know, 'The Lady in the Van' is the true story of an eccentric woman of uncertain origins, Miss Shepherd, who ‘temporarily’ parked her broken-down van in writer Alan Bennett's London driveway and proceeded to live there for the next 15 years. The play explores their bizarre relationship and is a touching story of friendship and human connection.

FADS brings the characters to life on stage - van and all - and through the eyes of Alan Bennett we eventually learn to love the can-tankerous and obnoxious old bag that is Miss Shepherd. Performances will be held in

the Headmaster Porter Theatre at Framlingham College on:

Thursday 18th - Saturday 20th April at 7.30pm Easter Monday 22nd April at 2.30pm Tuesday 23rd April at 7.30pm

Doors open half an hour beforehand. Tickets are £10 / £8 concessions and are available from The Stationers in Framlingham or via the website www.fadsweb.co.uk.
