Term 1, 2017
Deng’s Strength
At the end of 2016, Year 12 had
the great opportunity to participate
in a motivational day organised by
the school. The day included
workshops on ATAR calculation,
healthy lifestyle choices and the
importance of good mental health.
The day also included a special
guest - the inspirational Deng Adut,
who shared with us his amazing life
story.
It was especially helpful, as we
approach a very stressful time in
our lives—it helped to put things in
perspective. It was an amazing ex-
perience to listen to his words of
encouragement and love.

He encouraged us to never give up,
to believe in ourselves, to stay fo-
cused and to understand we have to
work hard for the things we wish for
in life.
Afterwards we even got to say a per-
sonal hello and ask questions. He not
only was a massive inspiration, but
also made us feel empowered at a
personal level to achieve our goals.

Short Story By: Albert Yang
The giant dragon smashed into
King Rolland’s castle. Sir Arthur
was the best knight in the kingdom
and he immediately went to protect
the king. When he arrived the drag-
on was gone and only the king re-
mained.
“That wicked dragon attacked my
daughter!” said the king who had
hardly recovered from the shock of
the attack and added with a quiver-
ing voice, “I order you to go and
save my daughter and if you suc-
ceed you will have my permission
to marry her.”
Arthur had lived in this kingdom
for more than three years and he
had never heard that the king had a
daughter. He wondered if the king
would keep his promise.
Before Sir Arthur set out on his
journey to fight the dragon, the
king gave him a beautiful pair of
red slippers that would only fit the
true princess.
He stated “when you save my
daughter, place these shoes upon
her feet and she will be forever
yours.”
After days and nights of travel the
knight finally found the castle
where the dragon was hiding.. The
giant dragon sat in the middle of the
hall propping her chin up with her
long claws, “Oh that fat and old
king does keep his promises” the
dragon roared. “Where is the prin-
cess?” Sir Arthur looked about the
empty hall and was concerned that
there was no trace of her. “Oh
God! Princess, princess! How are
there so many silly princesses in the
world being captured by dragons?”
The dragon rolled her eyes and
snorted, “You haven’t even seen
what the princess looks like and you
want to marry her? What if she is
ugly, looks like a pig and has two
toad eyes?”
“But the fairy talks always say…”
the knight stammered.
Suddenly, the dragon jumped into
the air and transformed into a beau-
tiful girl in a long red dress, as she
came back down she struck the knight
like red lightning, bringing the knight to
the ground – she was so fast that the
knight did not even have time to pull
out his sword. “The fairy tales never
said that you could defeat a dragon!”
she laughed.
A pair of red shoes fell from the
knight’s bag, “did the king tell you that
whoever fits the shoes is actually the
princess?” The girl winked at the
knight. Her beautiful face was like that
of an angel, with curly blonde hair - just
like all the fairy tale princesses. Except
there was something about her eyes, her
eyes look like two flashing rubies encas-
ing passionate flames inside.
She picked up the shoes and put them
on. “I’m not a princess, but…” she
smiled, like someone had painted a
warm ray of sun all over her face. It was
a different warmth, one she had never
felt before… was it love?
“I have everything that all princesses
have, and also have the things they do
not. I have the flame of the dragon
within me… ” she paused for a second
and stared at the knight, “but just like
the fairy tales I have fallen in love with
a knight too.”
At the end of 2016 the Student Representative Council
wanted to show their support of the Kolling Foundation—
an organisation that raises much needed funds for our local
hospitals. To show that the simplest acts of kindness can
have a great impact the SRC hosted a Superhero Mufti Day.
Superman, Wonder Woman and Deadpool all made an ap-
pearance and the gold coin donations raised over $400. This
money went towards the purchase of a new Heart Balloon
Pump for the RNSH Intensive Care Unit. Additionally, the
SRC would like to thank all the students and families who
contributed toys to the Toy Drive—we sent a carload of
presents to the patients sick in hospital over Christmas. We
hope to continue this generosity every year! ♥

Harmony Day By: Sam Modesto & Zara Westraad
On Wednesday 22nd of March, Hunters Hill High School
celebrated Harmony Day by wearing the colours red, or-
ange and yellow. It was a great day when we celebrated
diversity and multiculturalism, but most of all we thought
about all the kids who need our help.
Everybody was very generous with the donations which
went to the UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund).
This charity helps young kids in other countries from the
crises they suffer everyday. They help the kids get an edu-
cation, they give them medical help and they feed them.
Our school is proud that we raised over $450 for this great
charity.
Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for everyone who
lives in Australia and is celebrated by bringing all our
family and friends and schools together to celebrate our
differences and diversities.
History of Harmony Day
Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day
because orange is traditionally the colour of social commu-
nications. Since 1999 more than 70,000 Harmony Day
events have been held in childcare centres, schools and
churches across Australia.
Say ‘No’ to Bullying! By: Charlie Hughes & Poppy Burton
On the 16th of March, Year 9 had an anti-bullying day hosted
by Ms Woolford and Ms Shelley. It was a whole day dedicated
to kindness, respect, and inclusion. We participated in many
activities including watching a performance, making banners
for anti-bullying, and weaving ribbon stars for the One Mil-
lion Star Foundation, for which we made 143 stars. These
stars will be sent to the Commonwealth Games in Queens-
land, to be installed in an art project. One of the other high-
lights was the sweet barbecue hosted by Mr Gane and some
Year 9 helpers.
The day coincided with the National Day for Action Against
Bullying and Violence. The performance we watched gave us
some examples of bullying, like social, cyber and physical bul-
lying, and how to recognise it. Additionally ,we were given
strategies we can apply if we encounter bullying.
This day was a great way for the Year 9 cohort to bond and to
TAKE A STAND AGAINST BULLYING!!!!

Relieving Deputy Principal Personally, I’m very passionate about sport, particularly Rugby League (supporting
Parramatta), Rugby Union, Cricket, Golf and Fishing. I love music as most people
will attest. I’ve always got a favourite album or Triple J playlist playing in my of-
fice. I also enjoy riding my motorcycle over the weekend.
Working with amazing young people with infectious enthusiasm and huge poten-
tial is what I value most about being an educator; also, seeing young people thrive,
develop and achieve despite barriers throughout their time at HHHS. Working,
coaching and interacting with passionate and driven teachers and students is what
inspires me to work hard everyday.

Youth Jukebox—Youth Radio By: Jacob O’Loughlin
‘Ben and Jacob’ is the latest show at community
radio station 2RRR. On air from 4-5pm every
Tuesday, the pair are a part of the segment
Youth Jukebox. Youth Jukebox is daily segment
presented by local high school students. Every
Tuesday Ben and Jacob talk about anything
related to pop culture, from the latest movies to
foreign and domestic governments, and play a
mix of old and new music including songs from
Dragon to songs from Kendrick Lamar.
“I really enjoy the freedom associated with
community radio and having the support of a
great community. Being able to learn about
technical equipment is fun and improvising
during the show is one of the best parts”, said
Ben.
2RRR’s Youth Jukebox participates in a variety
of local events such as Moocooboola and Gran-
ny Smith Festival. Jacob, of ‘Ben and Jacob’
recently MC’d at the Granny Smith Festival
with a previous Hunters Hill Student, Claudia
Hirst.

Year 12 International Student I came to Australia by plane. At that time, there was news about MH370
and MF 370 that it was not just an accident instead there were political and
religious issues behind them. I was not only scared that it could happen to
me and my family, but also worried about if there were issues with racism
or discrimination in Australia. I felt relief when I safely landed. After 2
years of studying and living in Australia, I feel it is quite good. People here
are not as racist as I thought. Maybe it is because Australia is a country full
of immigrants, just like me. The Australians I have met are all very friendly
to me and I love them very much. I want to finish my HSC and go to Uni-
versity here. I don’t have a very big dream like those who want to change
the world or make billions of dollars. My dream is to stay in Australia with
my family. That is the life I want in the future.
