DeNeuville Learning Center Mission The DeNeuville Message Spring 2011 Volume 13, Issue 3 To assist women of all backgrounds and cultures in learning the skills needed to make positive choices of themselves and their families. House of the Good Shepherd of Memphis DBA DeNeuville Learning Center Christian Brothers University (CBU) hosted 10,000 Steps: A Journey to Benefit DeNeuville Learning Center on Saturday, April 16, 2011 on the CBU campus. It was a fun, non-competitive event in which an innovative game board concept was used to represent different educational opportunities and obstacles. Participants of all ages chose from four tracks to complete their journey around the campus: pre-college, college, adult education, and global perspective of education. As participants walked around the campus "game board" they received “chance cards” with entertaining, interesting and eye-opening obstacles and opportunities that represent their track. Opportunity cards moved them through the game more quickly; obstacle cards directed participants to fun challenges, similar to those seen in the game show Minute to Win It. Participants were also informed about educational opportunities that DeNeuville offers to women in the Mid-South community. We thank CBU for hosting the event, Dr. Tracie Burke, Chair of the CBU Psychology Department and Director of the CBU Honors program for getting her students involved in executing the event, the planning committee, CBU Honors Program students, Hutchison School volunteers, our volunteers and participants for making this event possible for DeNeuville Learning Center. DeNeuville Learning Center

Christian Brothers University (CBU) hosted 10,000 Steps: A Journey to Benefit DeNeuville

Learning Center on Saturday, April 16, 2011 on the CBU campus.

It was a fun, non-competitive event in which an innovative game

board concept was used to represent different educational

opportunities and obstacles. Participants of all ages chose from four

tracks to complete their journey around the campus: pre-college,

college, adult education, and global perspective of education. As

participants walked around the campus "game board" they received

“chance cards” with entertaining, interesting and eye-opening

obstacles and opportunities that represent their track. Opportunity

cards moved them through the game more quickly; obstacle cards

directed participants to fun challenges, similar to those seen in the

game show Minute to Win It.

Participants were also informed about educational opportunities that DeNeuville offers to

women in the Mid-South community. We thank CBU for hosting the event, Dr. Tracie Burke,

Chair of the CBU Psychology Department and Director of the CBU Honors program for

getting her students involved in executing the event, the planning committee, CBU Honors

Program students, Hutchison School volunteers, our volunteers and participants for making

this event possible for DeNeuville Learning Center.

committee: Dr. Tracie Burke,

Theresa Balestrino, Raegan

Cook, Dr. Ellen Faith, Dustin

Perry, Eloise Smarrelli, Dr.

DeNeuville Applauds 30 Women Congratulations, Graduates!

P a g e 3 V o l u m e 1 3 , I s s u e 3

On Sunday, May 22, 2011,

DeNeuville Learning Center

recognized students’

accomplishments at a graduation

ceremony.

Six students received GED

diplomas and 24 other students

received certificates of completion for

their work in GED Practice Tests,

Computer Studies, and English as a

Second Language. Sr. Madeleine

Munday opened the event with a brief

outline of the Center’s history and its

tremendous growth from the humble

one-room educational venue in 1998.

According to Sr. Munday, this success

stems from the openness of the Center to welcome women from every

step of life, which aligns beautifully with the openness of all students to

learn and respect each other’s culture and belief. “May we all learn from

their openness,” she said, “and grow in our capacity to welcome as a

blessing each person and the experience that God sends into our lives.”

Echoing Sr. Madeleine’s retrospection, Dr. Teresa Dalle, Associate

Professor of Linguistics at The University of Memphis, recognized in her

Charge to Graduates the considerable efforts invested both

by the community and by each and every graduate. “Your

first step in graduating today,” she said, “is the result of

many hours of work and the support of many people to help

you.” She also emphasized the broad and deep impact of

their accomplishment, “Your results are celebrated by many

beyond yourself and your families.” At the core of her talk,

Dr. Dalle ingrained in the mind of all graduates one piece of

wisdom: graduation is far from the end. On the contrary, it

only signifies the first small step of a long journey ahead.

“You are not at the end of your academic or professional

life,” she cautioned, “but at the beginning. You have gotten

there by taking a first step.” Dr. Dalle encouraged the

graduates to get prepared and to persist through the

arduous yet promising journey ahead.

Nia Zuri Calhoun and Sherita Campbell, two current students

of the GED program, lifted the spirit of the assembly by

signing “I Believe I Can Fly.” Our guests included Delaine

Smith, Attorney at Ford & Harrison, LLP, Carol Jones,

Assistant Deputy Director for Project Management, US Army

Corps of Engineers, Sr. Cathy Galaskiewicz, O.P., Vicar of

Religious of Diocese of Memphis, DeNeuville friends, and

students’ families and friends.

The mission of the center is very dear to

my heart, and it is evident that the

organization is making an impact on the

community. My job is to ensure that the

Center‟s programming and influence can

grow into a legacy of empowered,

successful women in Memphis. Thank

you for the chance to be involved with

something so worthwhile. Please feel free

to come by the office or contact me. I

look forward to meeting you! - Jennifer

It is my pleasure to join the DeNeuville

Learning Center as the new Director of

Development. I hail from Alabama but

most recently moved from Madison,

Wisconsin. I love animals, music, food,

travel, college football, and new

adventures. My experience in public

relations and development combined with

an undeniable passion for philanthropy

and community enrichment make this

opportunity with DeNeuville a perfect fit.
