Demo Teaching TipsAs of 17 March 2014
1. Before the lesson● It’s the teacher’s responsibility to add their students as a contact on Skype. Make sure to add
your student as soon as their contact details are sent to you by your trainer. When sending a contact request, make sure to change the default message before sending it to your student:
Hi! This is [YOUR NAME] from DMM Eikaiwa. Please accept my contact request.
[YOUR NAME] = Your nickname as a teacher, not your full name.
● Make sure that you open the DMM materials page before starting your lessons: http://eikaiwa.dmm.com/guide/material_top/
● Call your student on time, even if the student has not yet accepted your contact request.● Put your mobile phone on silent mode.● Make sure that there wouldn’t be anyone or anything around you that might disturb or interrupt
your lessons. (e.g. baby crying, dog barking, vehicles passing by, etc.)● To make sure that your connection is stable, do not share your Internet connection with other
users during your lessons.● Check how you look like in your video.
○ Framing: Make sure you are at the center of the video.○ You have a clean and plain background.○ You look presentable.
2. During the lesson● Do not speak too fast. Speak slowly and clearly, especially if it’s your first time to speak to that
student, and you are still trying to gauge their level. ● Encourage your student to speak more.● ALWAYS smile.● The name of our service in Japan is “DMM Eikaiwa”. Do not mention Bibo to them.● Use the chat box effectively.
○ Use it when making corrections and when teaching new expressions or words to your student.
○ Your student during the demo lesson will intentionally make errors. Please take this opportunity to use the chat box.
● Always call your student’s name with “-san”. Call their name several times throughout the lesson, not only at the beginning of the class.
● Remember that it is your student who decides what they will learn in a lesson. You cannot force them to do free conversation or use learning materials. In a demo lesson, most of the time, your student will prefer a lesson material.
● When using a material, be interactive. Ask questions like “Are you familiar with this expression?”. “Can you make a sentence using this word?” or “Do you have any questions?” to let your student speak more.
● Do not end the lesson abruptly. Leave your student with a good impression of you.● Make sure you give a lot of praises during the feedback.
3. Important Reminders● Use POSITIVE phrasing when correcting your student. (e.g. Start corrections by saying “It would
be better if you say…”)● If your student’s video is turned off, politely ask your student to turn it on. If the student doesn’t
want to share their video, respect their decision.● Be punctual. Be online at least 30 minutes before your training.● Focus on your demo lesson. Do not chat with anyone else during the demo, do not open websites
not needed in the demo.● Encourage your student to speak. The student should be speaking 70% of the time. ● Familiarize yourself with Skype. Know how to describe the Skype icons and explain instructions
on how to navigate Skype.● Take a deep breath before conducting your lessons. Try your best not to be nervous. SMILE!!! :)
