DEMONSTRATE
AGAINST THE TORY ANDLIB DEM CONFERENCES
Remember 3 dates.
Firstly, October 20th –
the day that the ConDem
coalition announced their
spending plans and declared
war on ordinary people from
public sector workers to
students to pensioners andworking-class communities.
The bankers may have caused
the crisis by taking Britain to the
verge of bankcruptcy while they
racked up massive prots but
Cameron & Clegg have decided
that it is us who must pay the
price. Their cuts package of
£81billion threatens everything
that working-class people have
taken for granted – the NHS,comprehensive education,
public services and the welfare
state.
Secondly, November 10th –
when over 50,000 students
from schools, FE colleges and
universities marched in London
to oppose the huge
rises in tuition fees and the cuts
i9n Educational Maintenance
Allowance (EMA). This set off a
magnicent movement of young
people which saw hundreds of
thousands protest, occupy and
strike against the attacks on
education. This has shown the
government but perhaps more
importantly millions of workers
that it’s possible to ght back
against the cuts.

Finally, March 26th – the
TUC demonstration on
March 26th in London.
The NSSN is working to
help make this the biggest
trade union march for years.
Hopefully, hundreds of
thousands or even more will ll
the streets of London to send
a clear message to the Tories
& LibDems – we are not going
to accept your cuts and pay the
price for your crisis.
However, the trade union
leaders have to ensure that
this demo isn’t the end of the
anti-cuts movement but a new
beginning. Marching alongside
hundreds of thousands of fellow
workers will show everyone
that they aren’t alone but part
of a movement that has huge
potential power. It should be
used as a platform to organise
co-ordinated strike action in
a one-day public sector strike
as a massive step towards a
one-day general strike which
could unite public and private
sector workers with students
and young people which could
shatter the ConDems and their
cuts package.
The NSSN has launched an anti-
cuts campaign to unite workers,
their families and communities
and young people to oppose
ALL cuts. We reject the idea
that we should pick and choose
whose job is more important
than anyone else’s. This is a
recipe for division. We call on
all Labour councils to refuse
to implement the Cameron &
Clegg’s cuts and are prepared
to work with them and anyone
else in the anti-cuts movement
who resist the attacks on our
class. These councils should
draw on their reserves and
even borrow to maintain jobs
and services and any debts
should be written off by an
incoming Labour government.
The prospect of resistance
on this scale – following the
example of the Labour councils
in Liverpool & Lambeth in the
1980s in uniting councillors,
the council workforce and
communities would make the
cuts inoperable.
This isn’t a strong government
but we need to organise a mass
anti-cuts movement locallyand nationally with the unions
at the head to stop them in
their tracks. Twenty years ago,
Thatcher got the poll tax passed
in Parliament but 18 million
people refused to pay it and the
tax was scrapped and the ‘Iron
Lady’ was turned to rust. Come
to the demonstration in Cardiff
on March 5th to show both the
Tories and LibDems that it is
they who will pay the price for
the crisis not us!
