1 Product Overview

The combination of Dell OpenManage Integration Suite and Microsoft System Center simplifies and

enhances deployment, configuration, monitoring and updating of Dell servers and storage in physical

and virtual environments. Our agent-free and agent-based plug-ins deliver a unique level of integration

and efficiency when managing Dell hardware within a System Center environment.

The OpenManage Integration Suite for Microsoft System Center includes: Dell Server and Storage

Management Packs for System Center Operations Manager (SCOM); Dell Server Deployment Packs and

Update Catalogs for System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM); and tools for optimizing

management of Dell PowerEdge servers in virtual environments using System Center Virtual Machine

Manager (SCVMM).



1.1 Lab Preparation Considerations and Caveats

It is in your best interests to ensure the demo environment you will be demonstrating is clean & tidy

before you begin. For this reason we would recommend, where possible, you log in to your demo at

least 15 minutes prior to delivery and check the following;

1. Familiarize yourself with the environment during this time and check any specific features you are

expecting to demo.

2. Most importantly, be crystal clear with yourself on what it is you plan to show. A full demo of every

feature described below (with questions) can take several hours. If you only have a short time slot

be sure to focus on the key points that address the customer’s pain points and will drive value

home to them.

3. Ensure that you have scheduled the demo for sufficient time so as not to have the demo end

before you are finished with the customer.

Any other guidance on how the user should prepare for the lab can be added here. If there are

limitation or something the user should be aware of call out also.



2 Introduction

The demo environment can be used to showcase the following

Deploy operating systems from bare metal using the Dell Server Deployment Pack and the Lifecycle

Controller Integration plugin for System Center Configuration Manager 2012

Update BIOS, firmware and drivers for PowerEdge servers running Windows operating systems using

the Dell Server Catalog for System Center Updates Publisher

Agent-free monitoring of Dell servers using Dell Server Management Pack Suite v5.0.1 for System

Center Operations Manager 2012

Controller Integration

1. Open the Configuration Manager Console from the Desktop and select Assets and Compliance.

Right Click Device Collection, Select Import Dell PowerEdge Server

2. Specify iDRAC IP range to scan - choose 172.20.0.220-230



3. The utility uses a predefined iDRAC account (specified during installation) for the scan. You will

successfully connect to one server which can be imported.



4. Once the server has been imported, right click the All Systems Device Collection and select

Update Membership



5. Open the All Systems Device Collection and verify that the imported server is a member (it's name

will be the Machine Service Tag).

Note: If it is not appearing in the Collection, click the Refresh icon. Sometimes it is necessary to run

the "Update membership" command (previous step) again.

6. Right click on the imported server and select Launch System Viewer from the Dell Lifecycle

Controller menu



7. Select BiosConfiguration and Create a New Profile



8. Make a minor change to the Bios Configuration, for example enable or disable the

ProcVirtualization setiing.

9. SaveAs the Configuration Profile specifying the filename of the xml file.

Note: Similar profiles can be created if required for RAID, iDRAC and NICs.

10. Close the System Viewer when you are finished creating profiles.



11. Right click on the imported server and choose Add Selected Items to Existing Device Collection.

Add it to the Server Deployment Collection.

12. Right click the Server Deployment Collection and select Update Membership. Refresh the

collection until the server appears.



13. Right click on the Server Deployment collection and select Launch Config Utility from the Dell

Lifecycle Controller menu.



14. Select the Hardware Configuration and Operating System Deployment task. You may select

Update firmware from ftp.dell.com (this can take some time to complete).

15. Continue through the steps. If you have configured Configuration Profiles previously you can

browse and select these.



16. For example select Configure BIOS, click Browse and choose the Bios Profile xml file.



17. For a Windows deployment choose Expose drivers from Lifecycle Controller and click next.



18. Type the path to the boot media - "\\SCCMServerIP\Installs\LCMedia1.iso"- SCCMServerIP is the IP

address of the SCCM server you are on. N.B. This will vary depending on the demo instance, use

ipconfig to verify.

a. Username: om01\demousers Password: password.

19. Click Reboot targeted Collection to reboot the server and begin the Operating System

Deployment



20. Alternatively choose Non Windows Operating System and Select VMware ESXi 5.0 HDD.

a. Type a root and password and Enable DHCP and DNS from DHCP.



21. Type the path to the ISO - \\SCCMServerIP\nfs\VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.0.0-504890.x86_64-

Dell_Customized_RecoveryCD_A04.iso

22. To save on some typing - browse to the NFS share (\\SCCMServerIP\nfs) from the run command

on the server and copy the file name as below.



23. You can monitor the progress of the deployment using the Task Viewer which can be launched

from the system tray.



24. Right click on the machine and Launch the iDRAC Console to view progress on the server. iDRAC

credentials - User: demouser Password: password



25. Open System Center Updates Publisher 2011 from the Desktop. Once loaded click on Catalogs to

show that the Dell Server Updates Catalog has been added. Note the catalog location on

ftp.dell.com



26. Click Updates and browse through the Dell folder to show all the available updates from the

catalog.



27. Click Publications to show the updates that have been published to SCCM.

Note: the Dell OpenManage Inventory Agent is required on all servers to be updated. A bundle

contains all updates for a particular server Model.



28. Open the Configuration Manager Console, click Software Library, Software Updates, All Software

Updates to view the Dell server updates that have been published from SCUP.

Note: These can now be deployed to windows servers using the same procedures as Microsoft

updates in SCCM.



29. Launch the Operations Console from the Desktop



30. Expand the Dell Folder, Diagram Views and select the Modular Systems Diagram view.



31. Select one of the servers to show the Dell Windows Server Tasks



32. Expand the tree to show the details of the waring message - note in the demo one of the pysical

disks has been unplugged.



33. Expand State Views and select Servers and Rack Workstations (Agent-free)



34. Select Servers and Rack Workstations (Agent-based)



35. Show Performance and Power Monitoring Views
