BIOMESWhat is BIOME?BIOMES are very large geographical areas on the earths surface, with animals and plants adapting to their environment. There are SEVEN (7) major types biomes on earth. The distribution of biomes is largely controlled by CLIMATIC FACTORS and PRECIPITATIONMAJOR TYPES OF BIOMES
FORESTSWhy are forests important?Forests provides foods and habitats for a variety of plants and animalsIt has the highest biodiversity among the natural ecosystem. Besides trees, which dominate the forests, there are birds, snakes, insects and other tree-living animals.Hidden within these biomes are potential medicines and many thousands of unseen and undiscovered species Sagano Bamboo Forest, Japan
Crooked Forest, Poland
Amazon Rainforest, South America
Black Forest, Germany
FRESHWATERFreshwater is defined as having a low salt concentration usually less than 1%. It is a biome where water is not too salty to drink. There are different types of freshwater regions:1. Ponds and lakes2. Streams and rivers3. Wetlands
Plants and animals in freshwater regions are adjusted to the low salt content.
What is your understanding about the word fresh water?
Lake Titicaca, Bolivia & PeruLake Tahoe, California & Nevada
Pehoe Lake, Patagonia, Chile
Taal Lake, PhilippinesReefs are home to a number of marine animals. Sea dwelling animals depend on coral reefs for food, shelter and protection.Marine regions cover about three-fourths of the Earth's surface and include oceans, coral reefs, and estuaries.MARINE
What important role does coral reef play in our ecosystem?9TUBBATAHA REEF, PHILIPPINES
GREAT BARRIER REEF, AUSTRALIA
PACIFIC OCEAN
ARCTIC OCEANDesertDeserts cover about one fifth of the Earth's surface. It receives very little rainfall in a year.Cactus and Aloe has specialized stem that store water and large set of roots that collects water. Camel has the ability to store large amount of water for a long period of time.
What are the plants and animals that live in the desert? What enables them to adapt to this kind of environment
Sahara Desert, North Africa
Deserts in Australia
GrasslandGrasslands are characterized as lands dominated by grasses rather than large shrubs or trees. Why is it that only grass and few trees can grow in this biome? The soil of most grassland are too thin and dry for trees to survive. Less water is available and frequent fire prevents them from growingWhat characterizes grassland?
TundraIt is noted for its frost-molded landscapes, extremely low temperatures, and little precipitation Tundra is the coldest of all the biomes. Tundra comes from the Finnish wordtunturi, meaning TREELESS PLAIN.How this biome differ from the other regions? Why limited plants grow in this biome?Plants received little precipitation and there exist permanently frozen subsoil known as PERMAFROST.
ANTARCTICAARCTIC REGIONTaigaThe taiga is the world's largest terrestrialbiomeMarked by the dominance of tall conifers with needle-like leaves.
What do you think is the most dominant object in this picture? Also called as CONIFEROUS FOREST
