agriculture in which farms and vineyards are considered as living organisms and farmers take into account every aspect of their natural environment. This manner of viewing and understanding the natural world also extends to the soil, home to microorganisms, roots and animals. The role of the biodynamic farmer is to maintain the balance of this complex ecosystem while renewing the vitality of its constituents through biodynamic preparations made from natural products and medicinal plants. Work in the vineyards proves more productive if the natural rhythms which influence our planet, and all the life forms on it, are respected. By working in close collaboration with nature and showing the utmost respect for the environment, biodynamic wine producers obtain grapes which express the full potential of their vineyards.

As well as being certified organic, all Demeter products also meet Demeter’s strict technical specifications which guarantee that the vines and the wine have been produced according to biodynamic ethics. In the vineyards, for example, biodynamic winegrowers apply half the quantity of copper authorized under the technical specifications for organic products; they authorise fewer oenological inputs than for organic wines, and much lower quantities of sulphites. Demeter is the leading international trademark for biodynamic products; it can be found in more than 50 countries in the world and on every continent, bringing together more than 350 winegrowers in France and more than 700 throughout the world.

Demeter wines, produced from vigorous, ripe fruits, owe their quality to biodynamic grapes. Biodynamic wine producers intervene as little as possible in the wine cellar, allowing nature to fully express itself. It is the natural yeasts present in the vineyards which lead the fermentation process. Hence, the wine evolves to reveal its own unique characteristics which distinguish it from all others. Demeter wines express the perfectly balanced and individual character of their terroir. Their intense, complex aromas are enhanced by mineral notes which evoke their link to the earth. Biodynamic wines are also easier to digest and are becoming ever more popular with consumers and sommeliers alike.

I find the biodynamic farmer’s holistic approach to life very inspiring. Biodynamics is indeed more than just the sum of all its parts – much more than its individual elements. All the elements are interconnected and interdependent. Biodynamic practitioners have such a heightened conscience and capacity for observation born out of their deep respect for nature: they are truly humble.

Biodynamic agriculture favours the relationship between man and his land, in all its diversity. Biodynamic preparations and specific practices are designed to develop the soil, to encourage plants to dig their roots deep down into the earth and to better expose themselves to sunlight and cosmic influences, thus restoring their vital life forces. The grapes and wines produced, characterized by their complex aromas, their minerality and their elegance, bear witness to this work. By ensuring rigorous quality controls, Demeter guarantees that its high standards are met and that wine producers are fully implicated in this quality approach.

As far as I am concerned, the biodynamic method of winemaking is the one which best respects the environment. When employed correctly and intelligently, it optimizes the diversity of expression and minerality of the different terroirs.
