• The beginning of the new century has broughtAllopathic method of treatment to take a backtrack. All over the world there is demandedprevalence of herbal medicines. According toa statistical report, sale of Ayurvedicmedicines is estimated to be more than Rs. 3lakh crore around the globe.

• The major international companies in the field ofherbal medicines are depending on India, which is anatural source of herbs. Since the Vedic age the plants,trees and creepers of medicinal value have beenrecognized in India. The magical effect of the herbs as amedicine has been tested on the scientific platform.According to an estimate the Indian system ofmedication and homeopathy have a business of overone million dollar, which is equal to Rs. 4300 crore.

• The Ayurvedic medicines have a market share of 84percent in the market. Their usage had beenpredominant in rural areas, small towns and sub urbanareas but now the affluent sections of the society livingin the metro cities are also slowly switching toAyurveda after experiencing the side effects ofallopathic medicines.

• According to a survey of WHO the ayurvedicmedicines’ business would be 5 trillion dollars inthe next five decades. If this report is consideredto be true then herbs will rule the 21st century.Presently the traditional ayurvedic medicineshave taken 50 percent share in the Europeanmarkets, which is a major dent for the allopathicmedicines. In US alone, the ayurvedic medicineshave gained a market share of 12 per cent andthe figure is 4 per cent more in case of Japan. Asfar as the Asian countries are concerned thesetraditional medicines have dominated themarkets with a whopping 195 per cent share andin other European countries it is 4 per cent.

• There is a sudden upsurge in the inclination towards alternativeherbal medicines in place of allopathic medicines. According to aninformation report from the Department of Indian herbal systemand homeopathy 10 to 20 percent of the patients in the foreigncountries especially the western countries are shifting towardstraditional medicines due to the fear of contacting other ailmentscaused due to the side effects of allopathic medicines. It isextremely difficult to get rid of the side effects which are causeddue to the consumption of allopathic medicines. The ayurvedicbusiness is increasing day by day in India. The herbal basedcosmetics are also being introduced in the market looking at theimmense opportunities in the ayurvedic business. Hair shampoo,hair oil, body lotions, fairness creams, powders, tooth pastes,lipsticks, kajal (eye liner), hair colors, nail polish and many othercosmetics made with herbs and trees are being manufactured thesedays. The manufactures of herbal cosmetics claim that the usage ofthese cosmetics has no side effects on the body. Sudden rise in theimport of medicinal plants and herbs from India also proves this.
