delwood.ca August 2015 Friday night’s open house was filled with joyful greetings, hugs and conversation as current and former residents caught up and reminisced about the days when Delwood was a young, developing community. The many displays and photos set up in the hall brought much laughter and a few tears to everyone who came. Saturday’s fun included many activities and a lot of food! About 500 people came to enjoy the many activities including: the pancake breakfast; participating in the giant snakes & ladders game, scavenger hunt, bubble station, and petting zoo; be entertained by that juggler/balloon guy/Spiderman; eat some hot dogs; then bouncy castles, orbs, take a funny photo, enjoy the beer gardens and watermelon, listen to the pipe band and visit with some fire fighters. Whew! After speeches from Community League President Greg Sorenson, City Councillor Tony Caterina, MLA Chris Nielsen, former presidents John Yakowchuck and Sherry Liimetainen and presentation to our My Delwood Is…video contest winners Raymond and Ryan Coelho and Nathaniel Sorochan, everyone gathered on the hill for a special photo then enjoyed some celebration cake. The evening banquet was a special time for many families and friends to share delicious food and more memories. The evening program was led by Art Shea and we heard from special guests Michael Strembitsky (initial Delwood School Principal) and Bill Maxim of Area 2 Council. The slide presentation of Delwood decade by decade was a hit and prompted many laughs. A brief rain shower didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits, as the day ended with a fun family dance in the big tent outside and a great fireworks show. On behalf of the organizing committee and Delwood Executive Board…Thanks again to all the volunteers, sponsors and donors who helped make this day possible. FundraisingDirector neededimmediatelyThe Fundraising Director is an essential position on Delwood’s Executive. This person is responsible for the coordination of volunteers involved with the League’s fundraising activities, which include Bingo, Casino, Grants and other events.

We are fortunate to have community members that already take care of the Casinos and Grants. Bingos provide our operating budget for Delwood Hall, Rink, and Sports Equipment.

2015 OUTDOOR SOCCER SEASON

U12 Girls with their gold medals.

We are extremely happy to report that Delwood fielded a total of 11 teams this outdoor season consisting of 163 players along with 34 coaches, assistant coaches and managers representing our community. Here is a breakdown of our teams and some of the highlights of this past indoor season.

U4: Coach — Dana Lang, Ass’t coach — Kurtis Chapman

U6: Coach — Ivan Todorovic, Asst Coach — Melissa Thorson

U8 Mixed: Coach – Brad Gerard, Ass’t coaches — Janice Rosetta and Angela Carulli, Manager — Suzie Gerard

U8 Boys: Coach — Nick Mohammed, Ass’t coach— James Chambers

U10 Boys: Coach — Terry Oyakawa, Ass’t coach/Manager — Misty Ebel Ass’t coach — Randy Sorochan

U10 Girls: Coach — Matt Abrahart, Ass’t coach — Kevin Barabash Manager — Charmaine Bourassa

The U10 girls team (The Diamonds) had a great season this year. They entered the summer sizzler tournament winning a silver medal. Well done girls.

U12 Girls: Coach — Joe Caputo, Ass’t Coaches — Miguel Cardona and Gerry King, Manager — Chantelle Chinni

The U12 girls team had a strong outdoor season this year winning gold in the Tournament of Champions and with lots of huffing and puffing and determination won gold again in City Finals tournament. Congratulations girls.

U12 Boys: Coach — Darrell Demchuk, Ass’t coach — Robert Tchir Manager — Roxanne Coelho

The U12 boys team (The Demons) entered the summer sizzler this year winning a bronze medal. Way to go team.

U16 Girls: Coach — Chris Spielmann, Ass’t coach — Graham Kaiser Manager — Valeska Spielmann

U16 Boys: Coach — Willie Chung, Ass’t coaches — Curtis Gribble and Pasquale LaPorta, Manager — Shannon Doyle-Gribble

The U16 boys team (The Rebels) had another successfull season. They began and finished their season in the top teir, placing 1st overall in their group which qualifyed them for the city championships. The boys won silver in cities and advanced to provincials (played here in Edmonton), where they won another silver medal. Congatulations boys.

U18 Boys: Coach — Bob Lemmen, Ass’t Coach — Lockery Huhtala Manager — Katrina Huhtala

The U18 boys (The Spartans) entered the summer sizzler this year winning a gold medal. They had a strong season finishing 1st overall in their tier qualifying them for the city championships. In cities the Spartans played 2 exciting games coming home with a very respectable bronze medal. Way to go Spartans.

On behalf of the Delwood Community, we would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the coaches and managers who volunteered their time and effort to making this 2015 outdoor soccer season another success. We know the commitment that it takes to manage and coach our children. Their soccer development and memories gained throughout the season would not have been possible without you guys. Thanks to all of the parents for coming out and supporting the players, coaches and managers and good luck in the upcoming indoor season.
