They’re Delta’s ultimaterecyclers.

That’s what the dedicatedvolunteers at the DeltaHospice Society’s CottageCharity Shoppe say abouttheir busy Tsawwassenoperation, but they alsowant to remind people theyaren’t able to accept every-thing.

“A lot of people comehere to work becausethey’re recyclers. It’s a real-ly interesting recruitmentfor us, getting people whoreally believe in recycling,”says Nancy Macey, thesociety’s executive director.

“When you think aboutwhat we sell and whatdoesn’t get into the landfill,it’s pretty phenomenal. Werecycle and resell every-thing from hangars to cloth-ing and even reuse plasticbags. We recycle books andcardboard boxes that comein, it goes on and on.”

Some items on displayoutside that can’t be soldor recycled for whateverreason, but are too good tothrow out, are available forfree. Plastics are one suchitem.

“The culture is aroundhow we can reuse,” notesMacey.

The 56th Street shop alsoaccepts scrap metal andretrieves metal from itemsthat aren’t sellable, resellingit to a scrap dealer.

“Say we get an appliance, like a crock pot or coffeemaker,” explains volunteerMarnie Beveridge. “Wehave to make sure theywork. If they don’t work,we snip the cords off, recy-cle the wires, we recycle themetal on the pot and keepit out of the garbage. Plus,we get money from the

recycled stuff.”Beveridge says they also

accept small furniture, sinceit is snapped up quickly, and many other items thatdon’t make it into the storeare either sold outside orsent off to other operators.

The store, however, rec-ommends people call (604-943-4348) because there are

items it simply can’t take, such as TVs and VCRs,computers, mattresses, usedstuffed animals, cribs, sofa-beds and barbecues, Thoseare just a few of the itemsthe store is forced to haulto the landfill, cutting intoprofits that should supportthe hospice society’s pro-grams.

The store, which coulduse some more male volun-teers, will soon have newfencing erected to preventthe dumping of trash out-side the premises at night, which costs the outlet evenmore to haul away.

The hospice society’sretail store is no longercalled a thrift shop by the

society, but a cottage char-ity shoppe, aimed at reflect-ing what the society says isa higher level of donationsthat are for sale inside thestore.

Almost two years ago,the Delta Hospice Societyopened the Harold &Veronica Savage Centrefor Supportive Care andthe adjacent Irene ThomasHospice in the civic pre-cinct in Ladner. They werebuilt entirely thanks todonations.

The Fraser HealthAuthority provided the landand supplies operating dol-lars for the 10-bed palliativecare unit, but it’s still upto the society to fund theoperations of supportivecare centre, which providesinformation, counselingand acts as an all-roundresource for families.

The society says the needfor supportive, end of lifeand grief support servicesin the community continuesto grow and the charitystore provides 90 per centof the operational fundingfor the society’s communityprogram.

• The Delta HospitalAuxiliary’s busy Ladnerthrift store is about to geteven bigger as it prepares toexpand into the former Dog& Pony Shop next door

It’s the second significantexpansion for the store inrecent years as it previouslytook over adjacent spacewhen a bank relocated.

Using a grant from WestCoast Environmental Lawto launch court action, thegroup noted the federalgovernment is an equal, and therefore responsible, partner.

The judgment last week, however, found the societydid not address the legalargument presented by thegovernment, and did notprovide any evidence tosubstantiate the society’s

concerns regarding impactto Burns Bog from highwayconstruction.

“It’s obvious the federalgovernment left a big loop-hole in the conservationcovenant. Everybody shouldstart looking at their con-servation covenants to seeif they have any validity or

not,” said Olson.“It’s interesting the fed-

eral government talks aboutthey have no fiduciary duty,so does that go for every-thing?” she asked.

In 2004, four partners —federal, provincial, regionaland municipal governments— jointly purchased 2,042

hectares (5,045 acres) ofBurns Bog to be protectedas an ecological conser-vancy area.

A legally binding conser-vation covenant was placedon the land to ensure it isprotected.

The new $1 billion high-way is being constructed

outside that conservancyarea.

Delta was not named inthe lawsuit.

Delta council has repeat-edly stated it did not havethe legal ability to inter-vene, and obtained an out-side legal opinion statingthe same.

She’s still interested butis also reviewing a numberof options available to herin the private sector, shenoted.

“I’m certainly not sayingyes or no right now, but Iwill know better by the endof next week,” she said.“If it turns out that it’s notthis time, I’m certainly notgoing to say never.”

On the provincial scene, the optics certainly don’tlook good for the rulingLiberals as several veteranMLAs last week announcedthey won’t be running innext year’s election. PremierChristy Clark downplayedthe loss, saying it gives hergovernment a chance torenew.

Kevin Falcon steppeddown as finance ministerand announced he won’tbe running again. He wassoon joined by EducationMinister George Abbott, parliamentary secretaryJohn Les and Children’sMinister Mary McNeil.

The party had earlierbeen stung by the loss ofMLA John van Dongen, who defected to the fledg-ing B.C. Conservatives.

Responding to the lat-est Liberal departures,Conservative Leader JohnCummins said it’s evidentboth the government andparty are in turmoil.

“In part that is becauseof internal dissension, but, more importantly, it isbecause British Columbiansdesire a fundamentalchange in how our provinceis governed, and a change inthe government,” he said.

Meanwhile, theConservatives’ plan forDelta South is still notclear.

Cummins, the formerhighly popular ConservativeMP for Delta-RichmondEast, in an interview severalmonths ago said he toldDelta South MLA VickiHuntington she shouldremain an independent, until at least the next elec-tion, because that’s whyresidents voted for her.

As far as speculation theConservatives are court-ing her and that she mayjoin their ranks by the nextelection, Huntington earlierthis summer said unless“something absolutely com-pelling” occurs she seesherself remaining an inde-pendent.

“I believe in what I’veaccomplished as an inde-pendent and I believe thatwe are freed from the con-straints of party discipline.Right now, this provinceneeds honesty and inde-pendence in that house. Itneeds people that can speakout on the issues,” she toldthe Optimist at the time.

The right-leaningHuntington narrowly beatthe Liberals’ Wally Oppal inthe last election, thanks inpart to strategic voting byNDP supporters. If she runson her own again, she couldfind herself up againstanother Liberal, the NDPas well as a Conservativecandidate.

The New Democrats havealready selected Nic Slateras their candidate in the rid-ing. Saying they looked atpossible vote splitting sce-narios, he told the Optimistearlier that they believe theyhave a good chance of win-ning in Delta South.

The next election isscheduled for May 14,2013.

All the dominoes haven’t fallen in place yet as to who will be running in Delta South in next May’s provincial election. Current MLAVicki Huntington (left) could remain an independent, while Nic Slater (middle) is the confirmed NDP candidate. It remains to be seenwhat plans Conservative Leader John Cummins (right) has for the riding.

A local man is reachingout in hopes of finding theGood Samaritan who cameto his rescue recently.

On the afternoon of Aug.24, Neil Stevens and hiswife were walking their dogalong Ferry Road in Ladner.Stevens said he stopped toeat some blackberries grow-ing next to the sidewalkwhile his wife carried onahead with the couple’s dog.

Stevens said he didn’trealize the sidewalkdropped off into a swampyarea and as the 83-year-oldreached for one last berry,he lost his balance and fellhead first into the bush.

Luckily he got hung upin the blackberry bush and

didn’t fall any farther, how-ever, the long-time Ladnerresident was stuck in anawkward position with hisfeet in the air and bleeding.

Stevens said he sustainedseveral cuts from the black-berry thorns and was bleed-ing a lot because he takesblood thinners.

“I couldn’t be seen fromthe road,” he said. “Therewas no way I could get outof there.”

Stevens yelled and raisedhis one free arm each time

a car passed by to no avail. No one could see or hearhim.

After about half an hour,he said, a man came walk-ing by.

“I waved my one freearm and yelled as loud as Icould,” he said.

The man heard Stevens’cries and was able to pullhim out of the bush.

“It was all he could do toget me out of that position...he got me up but I didn’tget his name.”

The man continued onhis walk and a short timelater Stevens’ wife came bywith the couple’s car.

As much as Rita Johnston — sorry, Imean Christy Clark — tries to put a posi-tive spin on what’s transpired with herLiberals recently, it’s becoming increas-ingly clear the governing party has anexpiration date of next May stamped allover it.

In fact, what’s happening now is soeerily reminiscent of the events theplayed out in this province two decadesago that it feels like we’re all watching amovie where we already know the end-ing.

Clark has been cast in the unenviablerole of Johnston, who had taken over theSocial Credit, a long-serving governmentthat had lost the public’s trust and wasstaggering toward a day of reckoningwith voters.

NDP Leader Adrian Dix reprises therole of future premier Mike Harcourt, while John Cummins, the longtimeformer Delta MP and current leader ofthe provincial Conservatives, is cast asGordon Wilson, under whose leader-ship this version of the Liberals came toprominence.

Clark is doing whatever she can toconvince voters the sequel won’t end inthe same way, spinning the departures ofveteran cabinet ministers as an opportu-nity for renewal. Yet this vaunted benchstrength she refers to includes the samefolks she passed over last year when shehad a chance to re-brand the government.

There’s no denying cabinet ministerslike Kevin Falcon and George Abbotthave been in public life for a long time,so it stands to reason at some pointthey’re going to call it a career, but thefact they’re doing so when the party isat its lowest ebb does give off a sinkingship vibe. Then again, maybe they’re justtaking Clark’s Families First agenda liter-ally, given pretty much every departingMLA is using spending more time withfamily as the reason not to run again.

Here in Delta South, it looks likepotential Liberal candidate KellyGuichon is having second thoughts aboutseeking the party’s nomination. Whatappeared to be a decent opportunity ayear ago when the Delta Chamber ofCommerce president initially threw herhat in the ring, now doesn’t look quiteas rosy and, perhaps not coincidentally,Guichon is wavering on whether she’llrun.

Politics is an unpredictable game andClark still has eight months to pull arabbit out of her hat, but it would takea comeback of epic proportions for theLiberals to close the significant chasmthat currently exists in the polls.

On the bright side, the crews haven’tfinished filming, so there’s still time tomake last minute re-writes to this script.

School starts again this week, but it sure feels like February. Youknow, Groundhog Day.

The Southlands: Here we goagain.

In one form or another, we’vebeen talking about this round forover five years, and I’m not sure ifwe are getting any closer to a deci-sion. We’ve had a couple of polls, both formal and informal, that hadvery similar results — about two-thirds of people don’t want to seedevelopment proceed.

Tomorrow night was supposed tobe the municipality’s turn to haveits public information session, butit was postponed until more infor-mation could be shared with thevarious stakeholder groups. I wentto the Delta council meeting thenight civic politicians reviewed thefeedback from the stakeholders. Afew had submitted responses, but it

seemed the majority wanted moreinformation.

Apparently they haven’t had achance to review and respond toany new information, understand-able given the time of year. So thesession has been postponed, whichI believe is a good decision.

I must say, I am very impressedwith Century’s handling of thisproject. It has hired good peopleto help with the designs and com-munications. The plans are welllaid out and very professionallypresented. Enbridge could learn athing or two from this campaign.

And now, the pièce de résistance,a show home at Tsawwassen TownCentre Mall. I haven’t been insideyet, but I’m sure it’s beautiful. Tome, though, that’s where the ironycomes in.

It’s a house where a housedoesn’t really belong. That kind ofsums up the issue to me.

The long and short of it is, thisis getting really tiring, and servesno one well. The public gets alluptight about it.

The municipality is spending apile of our tax dollars both directlyand in staff time on this. Centuryhas probably secured a nice retire-ment of some of its suppliers withall the changes, re-drafts and revi-

sions. My biggest concern is the pro-

posal to change to the OfficialCommunity Plan. Given that theink wasn’t dry on the TsawwassenArea Plan, and a major change wasallowed for a six-storey buildingwhere only three was designated,I don’t believe there’s a lot of trustfloating around these days.

Even if we had the informa-tion session, it seems like an all ornothing option. The only way wecan put this whole thing behind usis to get the land into public hands, without handing taxpayers a bigmaintenance headache.

So here’s another proposal:Don’t change the OCP for thewhole property, but only a portionof it to be developed, and re-drawthe property lines where needed.Design a new plan that put housesand people closer to the currentinfrastructure of the town insteadof creating a second town centre. And give the rest of the land toDelta as is, to be changed as thepublic sees fit. Let’s float a pro-posal like this and see what kindof reaction comes back from thepublic.

It’s time to come to an agree-ment that we can all live with andget on with it.

Move houses closer to town &leave rest of Southlands alone

Letters to the Editor

Editor:In follow-up to my letter

last week regarding devel-opment in South Delta,I would like to make thefollowing observations andsuggestion to the people ofSouth Delta.

If you look at theissues that cause the mostdiscussion and divisionwithin the communities ofTsawwassen and Ladner,I think many would agreethe most controversialcome from non-conformingdevelopment applications.

Our mayor and councildon’t regard the bylaws, thearea plans or the OfficialCommunity Plan, or eventhe referendum held inTsawwassen, as binding andthey and municipal staffconstantly entertain andapprove non-conformingdevelopment applications.

So why do we keepvoting them in? Well, wedon’t! I’m beginning tobelieve the Corporationof Delta, which is dividedinto North Delta and SouthDelta, is the root cause ofall these divisive issues.

The results of the lastfew elections clearly indi-cate that it is North Deltathat elects the mayor andcouncil and they are strong-ly supported during thoseelections by those who wantto develop in South Delta.

These communities ofNorth Delta and SouthDelta have almost noth-ing in common except themayor and council:

• We don’t have the sameMP;

• We don’t have the sameMLA;

• We don’t share thesame hospital;

• We don’t have the samenewspapers.

South Delta has numer-ous major issues that are ofabsolutely no concern to theresidents of North Delta, and why would they be:

• Traffic at the GeorgeMassey Tunnel;

• Traffic from the ferries;• Expansion of Deltaport

and a rail yard;• Extensive development

of the TFN;• Development of Ladner

Harbour;• The Burns Bog landfill;• Burns Bog;• Border crossing;• Boundary Bay Airport;• South Fraser Perimeter

Road;• Farming;• Dikes and irrigation

water;• Southlands develop-

ment;

None of these majorSouth Delta issues are ofany concern to the voters ofNorth Delta who are largelyresponsible for who repre-sents us at municipal hall.

I now believe the onlysolution to our developmentissues, and many of theother concerns the peopleof South Delta have, isto work to separate fromNorth Delta with the goalto elect South Delta peopleto council who will addressSouth Delta issues.

If that mayor and councildon’t listen to the people, then we could vote themout. That is democracy, yetfor quite some time we havenot been able to controlwhat happens here in ourown community.

I think it’s time for a bigchange.

Greg Hoover

South Delta should separate andelect politicians that will listen

Editor:We are writing to express

our concerns about a pro-posed development that isbeing planned for the dikebeside the Deas Slough. This development proposesto build 11 houses alongthe dike and establish floathomes within the slough.

This is concerning for anumber of reasons. Firstly, the slough is a beautifulnatural environment thatis considered part of thepark. It attracts many users, including kayakers andcanoeists, who appreciate

its natural beauty.A line of houses and

float homes along the dikewill detract from this expe-rience. It also calls intoquestion what will happento the Millennium Trail.Presumably the houses willneed a road access and thatwill undoubtedly impact onthe trail, which is used bymany members of the com-munity.

Additionally, and of mostconcern, is the impact thatfloat homes will have onthe rowing club and thewakeboarders that use the

slough. Float homes will bean intrusion into the water-way that will be difficult tonavigate for the rowers andoutrigger canoeists as wellas the dragon boaters.

If float homes areallowed up the south shoreof the slough, the clubwill not be able to run theScholastic Regatta becausethere will not be a clearwaterway to row up to thestart line. The club has runthis regatta for the past 20years and it is one of thelargest junior regattas in theprovince.

As for the wakeboarders, the presence of float homeswill necessitate a no wakezone. This will constitutea loss for wakeboarders ofone of the best waterwaysfor the sport in the LowerMainland.

We beg Delta councilto carefully consider theseissues as this proposalmakes its way through theplanning department. Thisdevelopment will be det-rimental to the many thatenjoy what the slough andthe Millennium Trail offer.

Stuart and Jane McCall

Float homes aren’t welcome on Deas Slough

Editor:They need to twin the

George Massey Tunneland soon, which shouldn’tbe as difficult as the firsttime what with all the newequipment and technologyout there.

In the meantime, someentrepreneurial personcould run a passenger ferryservice during weekdayrush hours from Captain’sCove to Woodward’sLanding with shuttle buses

to and from the BrighouseSkyTrain Station.

I would wager a lot ofDeltans would take advan-tage of this foot service. It would also create moretransit users to get to andfrom Captain’s Cove.

Or better still, TransLinkcould give us a sea bus forthe south arm of the river.

While we’re at it, let’s goback to building a bridgeto Vancouver Island. Chinadid it and so can we. B.C.

Ferries is out of control andbecoming unaffordable formost.

Two route options:1. Tsawwassen to mid-

Galiano Island, north overValdez, onto Gabriola/Mudge and landing aroundDuke Point.

2. Horseshoe Bayto Bowen, to Gambier,to Sunshine Coast (upto Halfmoon Bay), toThormanby, to Texada, toLasqueti, to Qualicum.

Choice 2 would alsopull a lot of traffic awayfrom the tunnel and requireshorter bridges, just moreof them.

Call me crazy, but theBand-aid alternatives arenot working. It’s time to getserious with our politicians.

How is it tiny PEI gets a13-kilometre sea-bridge andwe can’t even get LadnerReach or Canoe Passdredged?

Opinion

It’s rare these days to geta snail-mail letter. E-mailis so easy that we simplydon’t write. Except, ofcourse, for the few Ludditeswho continue to do thingsthe old way.

Like this letter I got fromone of them the other day,a friend who once lived inSouth Delta — and left hisheart here when he movedelsewhere.

Dear Dunc:I’ve been meaning to

write for weeks, makethat months. But it’s sum-mertime, and who wantsto do anything at this timeof year. Why am I writ-ing? Easy answer. What theheck’s going on with myold South Delta neighbour-hood?

Mostly I’m out of touch, but I still get the Optimistup here, and I must say thatin recent times the mes-sages I’m getting have often

made me abit of a pes-simist aboutthe future ofSouth Delta.

When Ileft Ladner, there was aclear under-standing thatDelta is farmcountry. Thesign said: “Ours to pre-serve by hand and heart.”I remember thinking: “Ifthat’s the mission statement

for Delta, you’ll be in goodshape forever. With keywords like preserve, handand heart, you’ve set a highstandard, a precise course

for the way youwant to go.” Itgave me a lot ofcomfort.

By world stan-dards of immen-sity, Delta’s agri-cultural endeav-ours are not thatbig. Blueberries,spuds, peas,beans, mixtures

of all three and a bit more— grown in some of thebest soil in the world. That’sthe important part!

But now, as I’m readingit, South Delta’s farmingheritage is being overrunroughshod by all kinds ofstuff that has nothing to dowith Delta or agriculture.Roads and highways thatlead to an ever-expandingport, to developments thatmaybe help the trade-trans-portation-shipping process, but gobble up farmland andmake a lie of the preser-vation by hand and heartpromise that Delta made foritself.

Somewhere along theline, shortsighted bureau-crats and politicians in theprovincial and federal gov-ernments said let’s do allof this stuff in Delta, neverminding that the powerlines, roads and port allseem to be for the benefitof someone else. And all

Delta has been saying is,“We know it’s a mess, buthey, it’s progress, and surelyprogress is good.”

One day, if you’re notcareful, Delta will lookskyward and the migrat-ing birds won’t be there, your treasured herons willbe looking elsewhere forhomes, the quiet of thecountryside will be shat-tered year-round by acacophony of industrialnoise. Guaranteed.

What’s the solution to allof this? I don’t really know,Dunc, but preservation byhand and heart certainlydemands that something bedone. Or it’s a big, fat lie.

The teacup lived insidemy grandmother’s chinacabinet. It was red. Notfire engine red or tomatored or strawberry red, butdeep red, like a sunset inOctober.

It was trimmed in goldand was as delicate, andalmost as light, as a but-terfly, and just as sweet andperfect.

It was my teacup, onSundays, at least, when wewould visit the home of mygrandmother, and of hersisters.

The roast beef and thepotatoes and the apple piedone, the coffee would bepoured.

“And Barbara,” oneof them would ask, “youwould like your coffee inyour teacup?”

They didn’t need to ask.I would nod, and they

would fuss, three white-haired women filling RoyalDoulton teacups at the din-ing room table, reportingabout the sermon at thatmorning’s service.

I added cream and just atouch of sugar. I would havebeen eight, or 10, or 14. I

might never have ponderedsugar at home, but I didwith a ruby red teacup.

But the roast beef din-ners, like all things, couldnot last forever.

As happens in life— in all of our lives — thegrandmother and her sis-ters movedwhere bettercare could beafforded, nolonger ableto care fortheir home, letalone make anapple pie.

Theirbelongingsbecame dis-persed, andmy teacup dis-appeared.

It had land-ed, perhaps, inside thebuffet of an aunt or a thirdcousin or on the kitchenshelf of one of many neph-ews or nieces. My motherand sisters didn’t know. But they knew how much Imissed it.

There were, after all, fewthings of that home I hadwanted quite as much. Thelinens meant nothing. Therehad been platters and serv-ing spoons and wingbackchairs for the taking whenthe sisters left their home, but I had no need or space— or desire — for any of

it. I hadn’t touched any ofthose things on a Sunday.

This summer I had abirthday.

My younger sister’s pres-ent was wrapped in tissue, inside a flowered gift bag.

“It may not be exactlylike the original,” my sister

had writtenon the card.“But I hopeit is prettyclose.”

I pulledit out of thebag.

“Be verycareful,”my mothersaid.

It wasa teacup,a red onetrimmedwith gold,a near rep-

lica of the one I’d last helddecades ago. My sister, mymother told me, had boughtit at an antique store. She’dbeen scouring such storesfor years.

The next day, and thefollowing day, and the dayafter that, I made my morn-ing coffee, and poured it inthe teacup.

I will never know its his-tory, but that doesn’t matterat all.

My teacup has a story, and my sister remembers itwell.

Not the original, but it isdefinitely her cup of tea

It had landed, perhaps, inside thebuffet of an aunt or athird cousin or on thekitchen shelf of oneof many nephews ornieces. My motherand sisters didn’tknow. But they knewhow much I missedit.

Ladner’s Megan Bonindidn’t know when she leftfor her Katimavik place-ment earlier this year thatshe was part of the lastgroup of Canadian youthsto benefit from the pro-gram.

Katimavik is a nationalyouth service organiza-tion that gives Canadiansbetween the ages of 17 and21 the opportunity to takepart in six months of volun-teer service. Over that time, the youths live together ina house and volunteer up to650 hours in communitiesoutside their home region.

Bonin, 18, returnedfrom her six-month stint inOttawa and Whitehorse inearly summer.

The Delta Secondarygrad said she was lookingfor something to bridge thegap between high schooland her post-secondaryeducation. She said she wasworking as a prep cook/dishwasher but she “justwasn’t feeling it anymore.”

Through Katimavik she

got to travel for the firsttime on her own and experi-ence different work envi-ronments.

Bonin left Ladner inJanuary for the nation’scapital where she workedwith Volunteer Ottawa, aservice that links willingvolunteers with communityorganizations. There she didbasic reception, helped pro-spective volunteers searchthe database and assistedwith youth programs.

At the end of March,Bonin left Ottawa forCanada’s far north to spendthree months in Whitehorse.

When she arrived, shesaid, the snow drifts weretaller than her, yet threemonths later the volunteerswere sun bathing on thedeck in their off hours. ByJune they were enjoying

just over 19 hours of sun-light a day.

In Whitehorse, Boninworked at the Yukon ArtsCentre, a non-profit orga-nization dedicated to thedevelopment of arts as animportant cultural, socialand economic force in theYukon.

Living in a house withnine other youths and hav-ing to share a room withfive girls taught her to bet-ter express her own needsand to listen to others.

Just after arriving inWhitehorse, the groupfound out the federal gov-ernment had cut the fund-ing to Katimavik and theywould be the last youthsable to take advantage ofthe program, which hasbeen running for more than30 years.

“It’s such a disappointingfact that the program wascanceled,” she said, addingshe would do it again in aheartbeat. “You learn somuch.”

For more informationabout the program, andefforts to save it, visit www.katimavik.org.

Delta SportsSuccess at Olympic Games ignites soccer fever

The success of the Canadian women’ssoccer team at the Summer OlympicGames in London is having a big spin-offat local clubs.

Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, SophieSchmidt from Abbotsford and BrittanyTimko from Coquitlam demonstrated thatLower Mainland soccer clubs are produc-ing players able to compete with the best

in the world.Interest is high at both the boys and

girls clubs in Ladner as many new playersare signing up for the fall season.

“Soccer is such a fantastic sport foryoung athletes,” says Russ Heggie, techni-cal director of youth programs in Ladner.“The sport teaches young children team-work, physical fitness and strength train-

ing, pushing oneself, and sportsmanship, let alone making friends for a lifetime.”

At the world level, football (soccer)is known as the “beautiful game” andemulating stars such as Lionel Messi andSinclair is inspirational to so many youthglobally.

There is still room to register for thefall season at most levels in both the

Ladner Boys and Ladner Girls SoccerClubs. Children can start playing asearly as the age of five so anyone enter-ing kindergarten, all the way up to 17, iseligible to play the most popular sport inthe world.

More information for both clubs can befound at ladnerboyssoccer.com and ladn-ergirlssoccer.ca.

Ladner Celtic U11 boys develop-ment team launched their seasonin impressive fashion by captur-ing the Bainbridge Island SoccerTournament.

The locals made the most of theirtrip to Washington State, stringingtogether four consecutive victories, while outscoring opponents 42-4.They capped their run against teamsfrom the across the Pacific Northwestwith a 7-1 victory over the NorthKitsap Havoc.

The theme of the tournament forthe Celtic was ball possession andthey displayed plenty of it. From thebeginning of game one, Ladner wasrelentless in limiting scoring opportu-nities for their opposition.

“There was a genuine desire fromthe boys to play hard, stay focused, maintain a solid passing game andcome home with the championshiptrophy. They were really resolute intheir approach at this tournament”said head coach Jack Torok.

The U11 Celtic have become awell-travelled team in the past yearwith previous trips down south fortournaments Portland, Seattle and LasVegas.

The team’s roster includes: EvanPaterson, Josh Bermel, Zac Sherwin,Aman Hundal, Braedy Euerby,Samuel Wilkinson, Quinn Torok, BenKraemer, Jack Chadd, Nic Lanchester,Kian Mackie, Spencer Yesowick, MattWillford and Ravail Nijjar.
