showed him photos ofanother patient that had asimilar operation.

“It was not a beautifulpicture, but it was func-tional and she was happy,”he said.

So in early May Harmswent in for the surgery. Inthe operation, which took

20 hours to complete, doc-tors removed his big toefrom his right foot andattached it to his hand toreplace his missing thumb.

Initially the surgery wasa success, however on thethird day of recovery, theblood vessels in his trans-planted thumb went into

spasms. Harms had to berushed into the operatingroom where doctors workedfor 10 hours to salvage thenew digit.

After the surgery, thenew thumb had to staywarm so the temperature inHarms’ hospital room waskept at 30 degrees Celsiusand his hand was keptwrapped and at a balmy 43degrees.

“For one week I was liv-ing in a sauna,” he said, adding he also began hal-lucinating from the painkill-ers.

In all, Harms spent fourweeks in hospital recov-ering and during thoselong days he said he oftendreamed of picking berries,a favourite pastime in thespring and summer.

“That’s basically what

kept me alive, ‘I want togo strawberry picking,’” hesaid.

And just one week afterbeing released from hos-pital, Harms was back atEmma Lea Farms eager toput his new thumb to work.

“Picking berries is justwhere I belong,” he said, adding it also acts as goodrehabilitation as he learns touse his new thumb.

The police complaintcommissioner has upheldthe dismissal of a Deltapolice officer.

On Monday, the DeltaPolice Department wasnotified the Office ofthe Police ComplaintCommissioner had upheldthe dismissal of Const.Felipe Gomes following areview by appointed adjudi-cator Alan E. Filmer.

In January, then chiefJim Cessford, who retiredin February, proposed thatGomes be dismissed afterhe admitted to four allega-tions of deceit and one ofneglect of duty followingmore than two years ofinvestigation.

Under the Police Act, incases of possible dismissalor reduction in rank officersare entitled to a public hear-ing or review on the record.

The adjudicator’s deci-sion is final and there areno more appeals availableto Gomes.

In his decision, Filmerstated, “In my opinion,Constable Gomes is nolonger able to fill the roleof a police officer. The alle-gations against him, whichhave been proven, are veryserious and lasting in theirimpact... I hereby order thatConstable Felipe Gomes bedismissed from the DeltaPolice Department.”

“We respect the finaldecision of the adjudica-tor in this matter and theyreflect the initial recom-mendation of our disciplineauthority,” said Chief NeilDubord.

“It is of utmost impor-tance to the Delta PoliceDepartment that we alladhere to our core valuesof honour, integrity, cour-age and trust; when thepersonal values of one donot align with the core val-ues upheld by the men andwomen of the Delta PoliceDepartment, appropriateactions must be taken.”

After 10 weeks of vot-ing and another month ofcounting, the results inthe transit plebiscite werereleased yesterday morningand the answer from voterswas a resounding no.

Overall, the “no” sideregistered almost 62 percent of the vote, easilydefeating the “yes” side, which garnered just over 38per cent.

In Delta, voters rejectedthe idea at a slightly higherrate with the “no” side get-ting 68 per cent to the “yes”side’s 32 per cent.

Tsawwassen First Nationvoters also rejected theidea by a 66 to 34 per centmargin.

Last year, the Mayors’Council on RegionalTransportation released itsplan to improve transit andtransportation in MetroVancouver. The proposed0.5 per cent tax hike wasexpected to generate $250million annually, moneythat would be earmarkedfor transportation improve-ments identified in a 10-year, $7.5 billion plan puttogether by the region’smayors. The plan called fora Broadway subway andlight rail for Surrey, amongmuch else, but not much forDelta.

The ballots went outMarch 16 and residents haduntil May 29 to submit their

vote.Unlike many other

municipalities in the regionthat actively campaignedfor a “yes” vote, Delta tooka neutral position.

Although Mayor LoisJackson is a member ofthe Mayors’ Council onRegional Transportation, she continued to voicemisgivings about the trans-parency and structure ofTransLink.

Noting the transit author-ity and mayors need tolook “futuristically” attransit needs, Jackson saidDelta is asking that a direct

bus from South Delta toDowntown Vancouver berestored, a service lost whenthe Canada Line was added.

The B.C. branch ofthe Canadian Taxpayers’Federation, which headedthe No TransLink Tax cam-paign, said Thursday morn-ing the “no” victory is awin for everyone.

“This is a tremendousvictory for taxpayers, ourunderdog No TransLink Taxcampaign and the CanadianTaxpayers Federation,”said Jordan Bateman, NoTransLink Tax spokesper-son and CTF B.C. director.

“Our campaign didn’t havemillions of taxpayer dollarsor fancy CEOs committingtheir groups to our cause— we had everyday tax-payers who simply believeTransLink wastes too muchof our money to be trustedwith any more of it. This isa win for all of us.”

The Better Transit andTransportation Coalition, which championed the“yes” side, called the resultsdisappointing and said itreinforces the need forurgent, region-wide transitand transportation improve-ments.

Chief knowsnew home abit different

TEDMURPHY

MURPHY’SLAW

He’s heard all about it, but now he getsto live it.

Neil Dubord, who was sworn in asDelta’s police chief earlier this week, isfamiliar with the reputation of the depart-ment he now heads and the four littlewords that have a way of separating itfrom other police forces patrolling thestreets of Greater Vancouver.

The transplanted Edmontonian by wayof the Metro Vancouver Transit Policeunderstands that “no call too small” isn’tjust a slogan or some kind of feel-good,but unattainable, goal the mayor has setfor the department. From his speech atthe ceremony on the municipal hall plazaMonday evening, it appears that Dubordfully realizes those are indeed words tolive by in these parts.

However, when one of his officers isdispatched to something as sinister asthe case of the missing patio chairs (Ikid you not, it’s in today’s Crime Beat),you just know the 28-year law enforce-ment veteran is going to have one ofthose head-shaking, welcome-to-Deltamoments.

Having said that, this approachshouldn’t come as too much of a cultureshock given Dubord has a history ofcommunity policing in Edmonton, which, coincidentally enough, is where hispredecessor came from 20 years earlier. And we all know that Jim Cessford wascertainly a proponent of the communitypolicing model, making Delta one of thesafest places in the process.

Despite being in the shadow of a majormetropolitan city, Delta maintains manyof the characteristics of a small town, particularly in the communities of Ladnerand Tsawwassen. OK, so we still mustlock our doors, but you know you’re in apretty safe place when you’re more likelyto get a laugh, than a scare, while readingthe police blotter.

It’s Dubord’s challenge to maintain thatsense of security, which is no easy taskgiven all that’s taking place around us.

We have come to expect a certainlevel of service from our police forceand a responsiveness to our concerns,no matter how trivial they might seem toothers. From the outside, this looks likeany other Lower Mainland municipality, but the sensibilities here differ from else-where in the region.

At Monday’s swearing in ceremonyCessford said Delta hit the lotto whenit hired Dubord, which is high praise initself but carries even more weight giventhe source of the statement. The retiredchief definitely knows of what he speaks,so it stands to reason that we should becollecting our winnings in the years tocome.

You would think the month ofJune this year would go down asa record setter for temperature.Brown lawns, droopy Dahlias andover the top lemonade sales wouldcertainly be indicators.

But no, we missed it by a frac-tion of a degree and 1951 remainsthe high temperature year for themonth that is mostly spring and alittle bit summer.

Was “global warming” a topicback then? Who knows and whocares. Summer is here for a shorttime so drink it in and rest assuredwe will be able to complain aboutthe rain soon enough.

I enjoy all of the seasons but itis certainly summer that brings aflood of fond memories of carefreeyouth.

For the past week you have seenit. Rogue gangs of happy kidswandering the streets on bikes with

no worries of time and space. Acouple of bucks in your pocket, aball of some sort and you are goodto go for a whole day. I miss thosetimes.

I love the menu change thatsummer presents at our house aswell. I am generally a barbecue allyear kind of guy, and I enjoy thatsummer seems to be an automaticportion shrinker. Now, any proteinis usually accompanied by a verysimple salad and that is fine withme.

The heat also ensures the kitchencounter and fridge are stocked withfresh local produce. We have seenearly bountiful crops of berries andcherries and it will be a short timebefore B.C. peaches and nectarinesmake their way to our local retail-ers. We have been gulling downthese goodies to beat the heat.

I recall summer nights when mybrothers and I would return homefrom a long day of Popsicle eat-ing to be treated to ice cream andblueberries for dinner. Sometimeswe would just have watermelon.Lots of it. On Sundays, though, there would always be some mas-sive hunk of meat on the squeakyrotisserie. You could hear it fromblocks away and you could tell bythe wonderful smell when it was

time to come home.Summer means play and fun.

I have spent some time preppingthe fishing gear and organizing thetackle box. The dock is finally in atPoint Roberts and my daughter andI are keen to get down to wonder-ful Lighthouse Park to waste sometime.

I am two weeks in to my slo-pitch season and fully enjoy thewarm summer night games withmy friends. On a personal note, Ihave managed to complete a bucketlist item. Our league is allowed anumber of under 25 kids. My 19-year-old daughter is now playingwith our team.

The other night we were ableto play together. ML was playingshortstop and I was playing thirdbecause I can’t move. We made acouple of plays together and it wasa lot of fun. For me, after 15 yearsof coaching, 50 years of playingand 19 years of “dadism,” that wasa summer night that I have beenlooking forward to for a long, longtime and one I will cherish forever.

Have fun out there and createsome great memories!

Letters to the Editor

Editor:On behalf of the board

of directors of the SidekickPlayers Club, I would liketo thank the community fortheir continued support ofour theatre company.

Founded in 1997 byCarroll Lefebvre and hav-ing just closed its record-breaking 18th season,Sidekick is thrilled toannounce its 19th seasonopening with FrederickKnott’s Wait Until Dark,

followed by the Canadianclassic Les Belles Soeursby Michel Tremblay, Godof Carnage by YasminaReza and closing withNorm Foster’s Looking.

This promises to beanother blockbuster sea-son. We want to especiallythank our partners, theDelta Optimist and theDelta Law Office, andall our patrons. Withoutyour dedicated support,we would have no one to

“play” around with everyyear.

And finally, a hugethank-you to all our volun-teers, many of whom givecountless hours to everyproduction.

Subscriptions for our19th season are now onsale and you can pick upa form at the TsawwassenArts Centre.

Carroll LefebvrePresident

Sidekick Players Club

Sidekick grateful for all the support it’s receivedas theatre group prepares for its 19th seasonEditor:

The Truth andReconciliation Commissionreport is tragic. More than150,000 First Nations,Métis, and Inuit childrenwere enrolled in residentialschools between 1883 and1996. The report’s headlinesare child abuse and shame, not proud achievement.

The intent must surelyhave been a positiveone: starting indigenouspeoples along a pathtoward full participationin the Canadian economy.Tragically, residentialschools failed to deliver. The 2010 average aborigi-nal income was $29,780compared to $41,052 fornon-aboriginal Canadians.

In 2014-2015 AboriginalAffairs and NorthernDevelopment Canada spent$8.1 billion. With this major

support why are aboriginalpeople not achieving theeconomic success enjoyedby other Canadians? I don’tknow. Someone needs todiscover why and imple-ment a solution.

There were 1.4 millionpeople with an indigenousidentity in 2010, repre-senting 4.3 per cent of theCanadian population. In2006, they were only 3.8per cent. Canada’s econom-ic inequity is growing.

Perhaps indigenous peo-ple enjoy their life, but atthe same time covet wealththey see non-indigenousCanadians realizing? Thiswould be understandable, but achieving such wealthrequires change.

I commend the cour-age and initiative of ourTsawwassen First Nationneighbours. They made a

brave decision to foregogovernment support and, like other Canadians, shoul-der responsibility for theirown future.

They seem to be achiev-ing major success, but Ihave yet to learn how theirmany leases will translateinto jobs and financial sup-port for individual mem-bers. Hopefully TFN willserve as a textbook examplefor other First Nations seek-ing the success that residen-tial schools failed to deliver.

is looking at further expan-sion, June 26

As I listened to televisioncoverage of this issue, I wasappalled to hear a companyofficial state that, of course, they couldn’t please every-one. This was in response toconcerns from farmers thattheir livelihood is at stake.

It appears he is unawareof the gravity of world hun-ger and widespread droughtalready affecting food sup-ply on this continent andothers. Farmland needs tobe saved and farmers needto be supported in theirmission to feed BritishColumbians.

At present, we grow toosmall a percentage of thefood we eat. That trendneeds to be reversed and

callous disregard for farm-ers’ concerns needs to stop.

Doug Stout trots out theusual line that the proposedproject “...will be subject torobust environmental andregulatory rules...” By nowwe are very familiar withthis claim but we know bet-ter.

Since Prime MinisterStephen Harper guttedenvironmental regulations, hidden in an omnibus bill,we know the playing fieldis not level and the wishesof multinational companieswill take precedence overcitizens’ needs and farmers’livelihoods.

We can only stop this ifwe speak out loudly andconsistently.

Let’s make this a strongelection issue.

Editor:Re: Canadian pride has

its price, Murphy’s Law,June 26

Ted Murphy’s cynicismmay be allayed if he tookthe time to consider all thefacts. Our Conservativegovernment has been proudto support local culturalactivities across Delta formany years.

For example, communitygroups such as the DeltaMuseum and Archiveshave, in fact, receivedalmost $5,000 over the pastfive years to support theirCanada Day celebrations.Likewise, the TsawwassenBoundary Bay LionsClub has received $6,400since 2011 to defray thecosts of the festivities at

Diefenbaker Park, both ofwhich I am proud to partici-pate in every year.

Murphy may also care tonote this year’s contributionof $50,000 for the WhiteSpot/Delta Road Race fol-lows a similar investmentlast year and coincideswith that race’s prestigiousnew accreditation by theInternational Cycling Union— the only such race in theprovince.

Our government is proudto invest taxpayers’ dollarsback into local communi-ties so that we as Canadiansmay continue to enjoy theprivilege of living in thebest country in the world.

MIt has happened once again, just

as it does every year. The reality ofdaily routine has shifted. One lastday of children in school, the nextthe freedom of summer. Sleepingin, running free all day, vacationtrips, summer camp... it all soundsso good, doesn’t? And the feelingof euphoria lasts for all of a weekor two and then we hear it ... “I’mbored, there’s nothing to do!”

What is it about this “freedom”that is so intriguing and so fleetingin such a short time frame? Isn’tsuch a reality shift supposed to holdour excitement, fulfill all our hopes, entertain us endlessly, maybe evengive us permission to be self-indul-gent for the rest of our lives? It’s notonly the anticipation of our child-

hood summers, but regrettably of ouroften unfulfilled adult dreams.

There is certainly a time and placefor rest, renewal and a different takeon routine but, and there’s always abut, when the primary focus of ourreality shift is a self-indulgent, what’sin it for me expectation and attitude,it will inevitably lead to an emptyshell of freedom.

There is an alternative realityshift that has repeatedly rendered alife giving, transformative kind offreedom. “Give, and it will be givento you. They will pour into your lapa good measure — pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure itwill be measured to you in return.”Luke 6: 38

On your mark. Getset. Go!

Artists will beracing against the clock inLadner Village later thismonth in the first-everGrand Prix of Art - Delta.

The event, presented bythe Travellingbrush.comand hosted by Artists in theVillage and the Corporationof Delta, takes placeSunday, July 19.

Up to 100 artists will beinvolved part in the pleinair painting race. They’ll begiven a location somewherein Ladner Village on themorning of the event.

“They have three hoursto complete their paintingthat’s inspired by the loca-tion,” says Mark Glavina, who runs an annualGrand Prix of Art event inSteveston.

He and Artists in theVillage, a non-profit soci-ety, are working together tobring the event to Ladner.

He says the “timing wasperfect” to bring a GrandPrix of Art to another com-munity, noting it will stillcontinue in Steveston aswell.

Artists are judged onbasically three criteria areas- capturing the spirit of thelocation, the creativity ofthe artwork and the techni-cal handling of the mediumthey choose to work in.

Artists in the Villagepresident/founder MaryAnn Burrows notes localbusinesses are supportingthe event by sponsoringpainting locations.

Spots are spread outthroughout the village.

“The last few weeksthere’s been a lot of artistspracticing in the village,”she says.

Once the three hours areup (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.), art-ists will bring their workto the Ladner CommunityCentre and prepare them fordisplay and adjudication.

A lunch for artists and

volunteers, catered by theDancing Pig restaurant, willbe held in Memorial Parkand will feature live music.

The public will be able toview the paintings, whichwill be for sale with 20 percent going to Artists in theVillage, at the communitycentre and also have theopportunity to cast a bal-

lot in the People’s ChoiceAward.

“It’s interesting, in thefive years we’ve been doingit in Steveston, not oncehas the judged winner beenthe same as the people’schoice,” says Glavina.

There will be awards forboth adult and youth art-ists. The awards ceremony

is scheduled to start at 2:30p.m. and the exhibition willbe open to the public from3 to 6 p.m.

Finalists will also havetheir work on display atmunicipal hall for a week,he adds.

Organizers are also hold-ing a photo essay contestwhere photographers are

encouraged to document theentire event and submit fiveimages.

I have been obsessedwith skincare my entirelife. I had horrible acne as ateenager and very dull skinin my 20s, so I’ve spent thebetter part of my adult liferesearching and experiment-ing with skincare products.

Now, fast-forward tomy mid-40s and I am boththankful that I have been ona strict skincare regime, aswell as terrified because Isee my skin changing, yetagain. Thank you, FatherTime. You suck.

I started my skincareregime about 14 years agowith the help of Dr. MarciaFleming and her amazingteam at Delta Laser andSkin Care Centre in NorthDelta. I knew I needed a

professional because what Ihad been doing — cherry-picking drugstore-brandproducts — was not helpingor improving my skin.

Fleming has been prac-ticing in the Vancouver areafor 14 years and she is themedical director of both theDelta Laser and Skin CareCentre and the LougheedLaser Centre.

She keeps on top of theconstant change in the fieldof aesthetic medicine andshe is also a clinical pre-ceptor (that’s a fancy wordfor saying she also teachesother physicians the fine artof aesthetic medicine).

In other words, sheknows her stuff.

I interviewed Fleming forthis column to get the low-down on what we shouldbe doing with our skincareregime with each passingdecade and how we can getbeautiful skin, at any age.

In our 40s, our focusshould be on adding mois-

ture to our skin and rebuild-ing the collagen that isslowly diminishing as weage. Two products Flemingrecommends to promotecollagen production arevitamin C and retinol.

In addition, we need tostart protecting our skinwith a broad-spectrumsunscreen, minimum SPF30, all year round. (Yes,all year, not just on sunnyand bright days, or whentravelling to a hot climate.Sunscreen 365 days a year, baby.)

In our 50s, the samerules as in our 40s apply(adding moisture to theskin, sunscreen and boost-ing collagen), with a shiftnow leaning towards addinggrowth factors and peptidesto your skincare regime.

Growth factors strength-en the skin, repair agingskin and protect the futureof aging skin. But, alas, justlike a cheap Coach knock-off, not all growth factors

are equal. To make a difference in

the skin, you need a phar-maceutical product, com-pared to a cosmeceuticallike those found in drug-stores. Cosmeceuticals willnot have the magical activeingredients needed forserious skin improvement. These skin-changing, fabu-lous products can be onlybe obtained by a doctor at amedi-spa.

Peptides (especially onesthat contain retinol, antioxi-dants and specialized DNA-repairing enzymes) workaround the clock to helpminimize UV oxidationdamage and uneven pig-mentation while restoringskin function and elasticity.

In our 60s, Fleming rec-ommends higher concentra-tions of active ingredientssuch as retinol and growthfactors with enzymes toprevent and repair photo-damaged skin.

These products will

radically reduce wrinkles, uneven skin tone, fine lines, rough textures and saggingskin. And, of course, asalways, sunscreen 365 daysa year.

One of the biggestskincare concerns womenhave (and the initial reasonI walked into Fleming’sclinic) are brown spots, oth-erwise known as age spots, and redness.

No woman likes these! They are the equivalent tothat person in front of us atthe checkout who has theexact change, somewhere inthe bottom of their purse, and wants to count it slowlyand methodically to thecashier.

Thankfully for us,though, we can easily dosomething about the spotsand redness, and as forthat person in front of us,just don’t use the expresscheckout. That is their natu-ral habitat, the “under nineitems or less” lane.

There are two servicesyou can have to treat spotsand redness that work bril-liantly. The first, IPL/pho-torejuvenation, will addressage spots, redness andsmall broken capillaries(like those little buggersaround the nose) in as fewas three to five treatments.I have had IPL treatment alot through the years andit does work, and with nodowntime.

The second service isFraxel or Venus Viva (new-est on the market). Thesetreatments work by resur-facing the skin, which inturn creates new collagenproduction, as well evensout the tone and texture, tightens enlarged pores andhelps with pigmentation(aka age spots).

PJ Wren is a local per-sonal trainer and writerwho specializes in over-40fitness and health and whowore sunscreen while writ-ing this column.

Islanders remain in logjam entering final weekend

It may take some diggingthrough the B.C. Junior“A” Lacrosse League rulebook late Sunday night tolearn who exactly the DeltaIslanders will be facing innext week’s playoffs.

A battle for the finalthree positions becameeven more unclear after theIslanders and New WestSalmonbellies played to a6-6 overtime tie on Tuesdaynight at Queen’s ParkArena. The result left Delta,New West and the VictoriaShamrocks deadlocked with12-6-1 records. Each team

has two games remaining. The Shamrocks seem

certain to nail down secondplace with only a home-and-home series against the 5-13-1 Port Coquitlam Saintsstanding in their way.

The Islanders were slatedto play the 5-11-3 LangleyThunder on Thursday night, then close out the seasonSunday (7 p.m.) at homeagainst the powerhouseCoquitlam Adanacs (18-1-0). The Salmonbellies haveto deal with the Adanacson on Friday, then the lastplace Burnaby Lakers onSunday.

Head-to-head meet-ings is the first tiebreaker.

However, the Islandersand Bellies split theirthree games (1-1-1). Thatprompted an email fromhead coach Greg Rennieon Wednesday to leaguecommissioner Ken Woodasking what would the nexttiebreaker be. Delta’s 9-4win over New West back inearly May might provide thedifference.

“It looks like goals for(in the three-game series)would be looked at nextand that would be us,” saidRennie, who has all butconceded second place toVictoria. “We just wantto be going into Sunday’sgame knowing exactly what

our situation is.”The Islanders looked des-

tined for a fourth place fin-ish until Spencer Bromleycame out of a timeout andfired home the equalizerTuesday with just 19 sec-onds remaining in the non-sudden death overtime peri-od. New West had extendedthe game by scoring twicelate in the third, then addeda power play goal to startovertime.

Islanders’ Ryland Hoodwas outstanding in goal

with 49 saves. His counter-part from Ontario — KevinOrleman — was equallyimpressive with 44 stops.

Should Delta face theShamrocks, the best-of-fivesemi-final series would startnext Saturday in the provin-cial capital, before shiftingto Ladner the followingafternoon. The Islanderstook two of three gamesfrom Victoria this season.Boxla bits…Thanks to a pair of

wins last week, the Delta

Intermediate “A” Islanders(4-8-0) look like they havedone enough to qualifyfor the provincial play-offs. Delta has five gamesremaining, includingSaturday in Nanaimo as thelocals look to at least securethe seventh seed for a best-of-three provincial qualify-ing series.

That would mean amatch-up with second placePoCo — a team Delta hasplayed tough in a pair oflosses (17-16, 10-9).
