Local retailers are pre-paring for a future that willmost likely include twomajor malls on TsawwassenFirst Nation land.

Ana Arciniega, executivedirector of the TsawwassenBusiness ImprovementAssociation, told theOptimist there’s no doubtthe devel-opmentswill impactlocal busi-nesses,however,most havea goodchance ofsurviving.

“We dida quickanalysis ofour mem-bers to seewho wouldmost likelybe affectedand whoprobably wouldn’t beaffected. We figured thatabout 20 per cent of ourbusinesses would directlybe affected,” she said.

“The others are a lot ofthe services and smallerbusinesses that probablywouldn’t. There’s alwaysstuff you need that’s inyour neighbourhood, likeyour dry cleaning, yourbank, there’s relationships

already,” Arciniega said.“For those who are goingto be affected, we need tobe creative on how theycan build more loyaltyfrom their existing custom-ers. There might be somestrategies they can startimplementing now in orderto be ready when this mallopens.”

Arciniega said it’s alsoimportant for businesses to

get togetherto take pro-active mea-sures, whichis why theTsawwassenBIA hasstarted work-ing the LadnerBusinessesAssociationto come upwith a com-prehensivetourism planand promotionstrategy.

Chief KimBaird said the

TFN is committed to work-ing with both businessesassociations to minimizeany potential impacts onlocal businesses. She saidsome informal meetingsbetween the three partieshave taken place so far butno formal plan has beenoutlined.

Baird said most of thestores in the proposed mallswill be different than exist-

ing businesses in the area, minimizing any potentialnegative impacts.

The TFN notes marketresearch has shown devel-opments of this size andformat attract new shoppersto an area, increasing localvisitation as the communitybecomes a new shoppingdestination.

The Tsawwassen FirstNation’s historic urban trea-

ty came into effect 2009,adding 1,072 acres to a landbase that at the time was716 acres. The TFN wasallowed to remove over 500acres from the AgriculturalLand Reserve, including thesite where the malls will belocated.

Other post-treaty changeson the horizon include amajor housing development, which will bring thousands

of new residents to SouthDelta.

On another front, theTFN signed a memorandumof understanding with PortMetro Vancouver last sum-mer to develop industrialland under a joint venture.Studies are currently under-way on the feasibility ofthat project and a decisionis expected this summer.Ground was already broken

by the TFN on a new logis-tics centre to complementport activities.

Not all the treaty settle-ment lands are to be devel-oped, however. The TFNwill soon begin an “agri-cultural strategy process”for its roughly 200 acresdesignated as agricultural.A steering committee willbe formed to direct thatstrategy.

Preparing for new competitionWith TFN malls on horizon, local business groups undertake pro-active measures to bolster commercial sector

“We did a quickanalysis of ourmembers to see whowould most likelybe affected and whoprobably wouldn’tbe affected. Wefigured that about20 per cent of ourbusinesses woulddirectly be affected.”

Ana ArciniegaOne of the TFN’s malls planned for farmland off Highway 17 and 52nd Street (right), called Tsawwassen Mills, will be based on theCrossIron Mills shopping centre (left photos) north of Calgary and a similar mega mall north of Toronto. Another smaller outdoormall, called Tsawwassen Commons, is also planned for the site.

plete the feasibility study, which will include trafficstudies and environmentalassessments before start-ing on some of the neededground work.

The TFN EconomicDevelopment Corporationlast year announced itentered into a memorandumof agreement with IvanhoeCambridge and PropertyDevelopment Group todevelop 1.8 million squarefeet of shopping and officespace on 180 acres just offHighway 17 at 52nd Street.

Ivanhoe Cambridge’sproject would comprise1.2 million square feet asa destination retail andentertainment centre. CalledTsawwassen Mills, it wouldfollow the model of thehuge CrossIron Mills shop-ping mall north of Calgaryand Vaughan Mills north ofToronto.

Property DevelopmentGroup is planning to devel-op an outdoor retail mallcomprising 550,000 squarefeet called Tsawwassen

Commons.The TFN membership

last year voted in favourof the proposed partner-ships, but at that time thosedeals were based on 100acres being developed on49-year leases Followinga “due diligence exercise”looking at the feasibilityof the projects, the dealswere changed to offer moreland on 99-year leases, thusrequiring another vote bythe membership.

The malls are to open by2015.

A net-zero offer willalways be a non-starter forteachers when it comesto their ongoing collec-tive bargaining, says DeltaTeachers’ Association presi-dent Paul Steer.

“Teachers who are onstrike look forward to arenewal of the terms oftheir employment and lookforward to a negotiated endto the strike, but are unwill-ing to accept government’snet-zero mandate, whichwould really deliver areduction in salaries andbenefits for teachers inreal terms, once inflation isfactored in,” Steer told theOptimist Tuesday.

The B.C. Teachers’Federation this week tableda new bargaining position, calling for a 15 per cent payhike in a three-year deal.

The union has also modi-fied some of its proposalsfor improved benefits.

The total cost of theunion’s new proposalswould be $300 million.

The union’s contractexpired June 30, but it’smade little progress incontract talks with the B.C.Public School Employers’Association. The BCTF haddemanded wages that arein line with those offeredin Alberta and Ontario, asharp contrast from theBCPSEA’s position.

Education MinisterGeorge Abbott has insistedthe teachers’ contract abideby the government’s net-zero mandate for publicservants.

BCTF president SusanLambert said she hopes herunion’s new compromiseposition would encouragethe government to alsobudge

“Net zero amounts to apay cut, while a cost of liv-ing adjustment is essentiallya wage freeze. It’s perfectlyreasonable that B.C. teach-ers want to keep up withinflation and move a littleway towards catching upwith teachers in other prov-inces,” Lambert said.

“B.C.’s economy is stron-ger than most, yet otherprovincial governmentshave set their priorities toinvest in classrooms, teach-ers and kids, not to cut edu-cation budgets,” she said.

Steer agreed, saying,“Teachers are part of thecommunity and want tosee everyone doing well.Teachers’ salaries makea positive contribution tolocal and small businesses.Any lessening of teach-ers’ salaries will inevitablymean that teachers willhave less to spend on goodsand services in Delta. How

is this a good thing?”Teachers have been

involved in limited jobaction since the start of thenew school year, includ-ing refusing to write reportcards. More recently, they refused to take partin the Foundation SkillsAssessment exams admin-istered annually to grades 4and 7 students, forcing prin-cipals and vice-principals totake on that role.

Those wanting to fix upan old jalopy will soon nolonger be able to store theircars on Delta streets, evenif they’re on a tow truck ortrailer.

Delta council gavepreliminary approval to abylaw amendment Mondayto prohibit the parking ofvehicles in various statesof repair being carried by atrailer or tow truck on anyhighway or public right-of-way for more than threeconsecutive hours.

A report to council notes

Delta continues its effortsto improve the visual appealof the community’s neigh-bourhoods and that fromtime to time the highwaysbylaw will require amend-ing to address emergingissues.

The amendment willprovide police and enforce-ment staff the ability to fineor tow offending vehicles, leaving “the streetscapecleaner, safer and morevisually appealing.”

Meanwhile, the munici-pality hasn’t gone so far asto ban the parking of cubevans with company logos oradvertisements on residen-

tial streets.Angry over a large

“mobile billboard” in frontof her house, a North Deltaresident wrote to councilseveral months ago request-ing a bylaw change toprohibit larger trucks frombeing parked in residentialzones.

Council was informed bystaff looking in to the com-plaint the vehicle in ques-tion had a gross weight ofjust under 5,500 kg, whichis the maximum allowableunder Delta’s highway andzoning bylaws for over-night parking on residentialstreets.

It’s not a definitive plan, but Delta might finallysee some action to helpalleviate traffic congestionaround the George MasseyTunnel.

Late last year, MayorLois Jackson sent letters tothe federal and provincialtransportation ministersrequesting they jointlyaddress the issue of trafficcongestion along Highway99, including the tunnel.

“As an issue of long-

standing concern, we mustact now to initiate a for-mal dialogue between thesenior levels of governmentand implement a plan-ning process to identifyoptions to resolve currenttraffic congestion as wellas accommodate futuregrowth due to port expan-sion and regional growthsouth of the Fraser River,”Jackson said in her letteraddressed to B.C. Ministerof Transportation BlairLekstrom.

Delta council would liketo see a planning process to

identify options to addressboth current traffic con-cerns as well as future traf-fic growth due to expansionat Deltaport, populationgrowth south of the FraserRiver and development ofTsawwassen First Nationlands.

Last September,Port Metro Vancouverannounced its $200-millionDeltaport Terminal, Roadand Rail InfrastructureProject — a three-year pro-gram aimed at improvingrail and road efficienciesthrough South Delta.

With the construction ofthe South Fraser PerimeterRoad and newly announcedimprovements for the railcorridor, Delta would liketo see more attention paidto the impacts.

Already on most week-day afternoons, long traffic

lineups start to form along62B Street as commut-ers make their way ontoHighway 99 and throughthe tunnel or south onHighway 17 and intoLadner and Tsawwassen.

In a response to the may-or’s letter earlier this month,

Lekstrom said that whilethere are no plans to replaceor expand the tunnel, “theministry is pleased to begindiscussing future optionsto reduce congestion andimprove the movement ofpeople and goods betweencommunities south of theFraser River as well asVancouver, Richmond andNew Westminster.”

According to the letter,a ministry representative isarranging to meet with themayor to discuss Delta’sconcerns.

Righteousness Is Not RightDoing, But Right Being

ADVERTORIAL

www.pneumachurch.com604-940-6700

But to him who does notwork, but believes on Himwho justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted forrighteousness - Rom. 4:5

What is righteousness?

Something you do or some-thing you are? Right doing orright being?

The Bible tells us that afterJesus’ sacrifice at the cross,God imputes righteousness, not to those who strive toobey the law, (Gal. 2:16) butto anyone who believes in HisSon. Because Christ took oursins and gave us His righ-teousness, (2 Cor. 5:21) themoment we believe in Him,God treats us as righteous, apart from our works orobedience. (Rom. 4:5–8) Thisis new covenant righteous-ness — A righteousness thatcomes by faith and not byworks.

You are not righteous becauseof how morally upright youare or because you exerciseself-control. You are notrighteous because you read10 chapters of the Bible dailyor because you feel righteous.Rather, you are the very righ-teousness of God in Christsolely because of the sacrificeJesus made for you. Whenyou believe this, your faith isaccounted for righteousness.

This is what God wants youto use your faith for. You donot need faith to know thatyou are sinful and if you arerighteous by your deeds, you also do not need faith. However, you need faith tobelieve and declare that youare the righteousness of Godin Christ, in the midst of yourstruggles with temptation andsin.

For example, when you feellousy because you have justshouted at your wife, Godwants you to exercise yourfaith to see yourself as still

righteous in the midst of thatfailure. This living revelation, that you are still righteous, will give you the strength tolove your wife and reconcilethings with her. The devilmay remind you of your foultemper and question yourintegrity: “How dare you callyourself righteous when youjust did that!” Ignore his liesand boldly declare, “I am notrighteous because of what Ihave done or not done. I amrighteous only because of theblood and finished work ofJesus at the cross!”

For He made Him whoknew no sin to be sin forus, that we might becomethe righteousness of God inHim. (2 Cor. 5:21)

Many people today believethat they have to work atbecoming more righteous andkick themselves when theydo wrong. They do not realizethat by doing these things, they are not seeking God’srighteousness; rather they aretrying to establish their ownrighteousness by their law-keeping and right conduct.

Righteousness is not aboutright conduct. It is a gift fromGod to us through Jesus.Because it is a gift, we cannotearn it by our law-keepingand right conduct - We canonly receive it!

How do we receive this gift?We receive it through thecross. God made Jesus “whoknew no sin to be sin forus that we might becomethe righteousness of Godin Him”. Today, we are therighteousness of God inChrist. We are as righteous asJesus is!

Do you think that in thebody of Christ, there aredifferent classes of righ-teousness - like the seatingclasses in an airplane? Thatsome of us have economy-

class righteousness, othershave business-class righteous-ness and a select few havefirst-class righteousness? That is nonsense! When Godgave us Jesus, He becameour righteousness. So, wehave His righteousness. Thismeans that we are 100 percentrighteous in God’s eyes! Weonly have first-class righ-teousness!

You might say, “PastorAndreas, I don’t understand. How can I be righteous whenI have done wrong things?”Think about this: Jesus, whoknew no sin, became sin forus. Jesus knew no sin, did nosin and in Him was no sin.But at the cross, He receivedour sin and became sin for us.

Likewise, we, who were sin-ners, knew no righteousness, did no righteousness and inus was no righteousness. But,at the cross, we received Hisrighteousness and becamethe righteousness of God inChrist Jesus. At the cross, the divine exchange tookplace. He did not deserveto be made sin, but He wasmade sin in our place. Wedid not deserve to be maderighteous, but we were maderighteous because we receivedHis righteousness. What goodnews! What amazing grace!

New sheltera long timein coming

TEDMURPHY

MURPHY’SLAW

It’s about time.Civic politicians did as expected this

week and signed off on a contract tobuild a new animal shelter to be locatednorth of River Road in the Tilbury area. The $4 million price tag, which is for theentire project, including land acquisition,is steep enough to give most taxpayers, even animal-loving ones, reason to pause, but there’s no denying a new facility waslong overdue.

The existing shelter is, in a word, out-dated, having been built 40 years ago tohouse only dogs. Seven hundred animals— that’s almost two new ones each andevery day — passed through its doors in2011, taxing the ability of the cramped, little structure on 80th Street to deal withthe volume.

Couple that with the fact it will soonbe, thanks to South Fraser PerimeterRoad construction, adjacent to a majorhighway and it’s no wonder a new homefor the Delta Community Animal Shelterbecame a priority for municipal hall.

There have been rumblings in thecommunity over the scope of the project, concerns that Delta is building a RollsRoyce shelter when a more practicalHonda would suffice. There’s no doubtthe municipality could have taken a morefrugal approach, but constructing thesame shelter, just in a different location, would have solved one problem, but notthe other.

The new shelter should serve the needsof the animal control folks for years tocome, meaning the issue won’t resurfaceon council’s radar a decade from now dueto overcrowding or some other malady.

What’s more, we’re building it withfound money. OK, so it’s cash from theGateway Program as a result of the SouthFraser Perimeter Road, but it’s importantto remember that Delta taxpayers aren’tpicking up the tab.

Yes, that SFPR compensation couldhave theoretically been diverted to lessenthe blow of property taxes, but hom-eowners eventually get a rude awakeningwhen one-time money is used to pay forongoing expenses.

Delta has a history of using lumpsums to finance capital projects, a policythat has resulted in the addition of manyrecent recreation and cultural amenities. It’s also allowed for the purchase of prop-erty to act as a catalyst for waterfrontredevelopment in Ladner.

The best use of the money, or at leasta big chunk of it, this time around wasdeemed to be a new home for Delta’sotherwise homeless dogs, cats and vari-ous other animals. When you look at theexisting shelter, it’s not difficult to seewhy.

As Bill Cosby noted years ago, kids say the darnedest things. I washaving breakfast with a friend theother day who was recounting thestory of a local teacher who wasplaying name that vegetable withher elementary class last spring.

Some vegetables were identifiedwithout a hitch and others, not somuch. For instance, none of thechildren were able to identify abeet. When the teacher held a headof lettuce in the air for all to see,one youngster was quick to call theitem “salad.” Close, but no cigar.

Whose job is it to teach kidsabout horticulture and farming any-way? I don’t know about you, but Iwent through the K-12 curriculumwith the odd visit to the pumpkinpatch and that was about it.

In Grade 10 or so, when it istime to consider what courses totake, do counsellors suggest careers

as farmers to senior students? Idon’t think they do, and even ifthey did, what series of courseofferings would prepare an interest-ed student to pursue post-second-ary for a career in farming?

These are important questionsbecause as we know, the averageage of farmers is increasing and,for the most part, generationalfarming families are an old idea.

Many farmers have to take onadditional employment to supple-ment revenues and it would seemthere are not many prepared to takethe challenge to jump into farmingas a new entrant.

The Delta Agriculture Plan isessentially complete. The 52-pagedocument notes some consistentthemes around farming and educa-tion and rightly recognizes thatsomething has to be done to ensurethat: “Farming is attractive andaccessible, providing a success-ful alternative career for youngerpeople and new entrants.”

Just how do we do that? Thislofty goal is not one that any onegovernment agency or school dis-trict can handle on its own.

If Delta is serious about being “aplace where the business of farm-ing can prosper while contributingvitally to the community’s ecologi-

cal attributes and social, cultural, and economic well-being,” then theschool district, Delta, the B.C. gov-ernment and other agencies needto sincerely and diligently put theplan in to action.

For its part, the Delta school dis-trict has been interested in develop-ing an agriculture academy. Schoolboard chair Dale Saip comes froma farming family and recognizesthat children need more exposureto horticulture and farming toensure there is a steady supply ofbodies and ideas to work the land.Vice chair of the agriculture com-mittee and local farmer and coun-cillor Ian Paton seems to agree.

Delta and the school district areon the same page here, which isgood. The challenges of farmingare immense and pressures aroundland use, farming infrastructureand world food markets shouldcompel us to innovate and educatewhen it comes to farming.

We can start now at the K-12level and we can make food andfarming front and centre with ourkids at home too.

Maybe plant some beets withyour kids in your backyard thisyear? We might not be able to getthe kids to eat them, but at leastthey will know what they are.

Society needs to educate thenext generation of farmers

Letters to the Editor

Editor:Re: Going to great

heights to avoid the limi-tations of an area plan,Community Comment,

Jan. 13It certainly has

not taken long forTsawwassen’s harbin-gers of doom and gloomto recover from theexcesses of Christmasand New Year. And onecertainly has to questionwhy it’s called “Sunny”Tsawwassen when thisgreat cloud seems tocontinually hang over itsresidents.

Now the latest call toarms is over the proposedredevelopment of the oldSouthpointe Academysite. It may, God forbid, involve buildings of fiveto six storeys.

Yet where were theseharbingers of doom whenthe new five-storeySouthpointe Academywas being proposed? And what an architec-tural abomination that hasturned out to be.

Not only does it hangover the gateway toTsawwassen like somereject from the TilburyIndustrial Park, it over-shadows the architectureof the beautiful SouthDelta Baptist Church nextdoor.

God, and the cloud, work in mysterious ways.

Michael Sim

Editor:Re: Public gets glimpse

into malls, Jan. 13The article doesn’t begin

to address the key point ofthe issue: Is it all viable?Upon doing some research, the answer to that questionis not clear.

The proposed almost 1.8million square foot areacomprising two malls, 20major retailers and about195 assorted other retailshops, food courts and thelike is quite something toponder.

This size of mall proj-ect, according to theInternational Council ofShopping Centers basedin the U.S., is classifiedas a super regional mall.

This means it should be thedominant shopping venuein the region (a 25-mileradius).

Do the Tsawwassen FirstNation and the develop-ers honestly believe theyare going to overtakemalls like Metrotown,Willowbrook, Lansdowne,Central City Surrey, ParkRoyal, Oakridge and PacificCentre as the dominantshopping venue? One won-ders if shoppers will leavethese and many other mallsin the Lower Mainland todrive many kilometres toTsawwassen.

Large-scale malls likethe proposed TFN ventureappear to be a dying breedin Canada. According to

Wikipedia, only two havebeen built since 1992:Vaughan Mills opened in2004 north or Toronto andin 2009, CrossIron Millsopened in Calgary.

These two malls wereput together by IvanhoeCambridge, the very samecompany that will developTsawwassen Mills. Is itpossible the TFN have beensold a bill of goods? Whyaren’t more malls beingbuilt?

There are many factorsthat formulate the answerto this viability question.People now prefer to shoplocally. They shop online. They have become moresophisticated and preferboutique or “one of ” stores

that feel more personal. They don’t want to spendtime and money on gasolineto travel to a destinationmall.

In the Greater Vancouverarea, there is a plethora ofshopping opportunities thatrequire limited travel, greatselection and competitivepricing, all without havingto squeeze through a tunnel, while fighting ferry traffic,so they can go to a discountoutlet store to buy stuff theydon’t really need in a weakeconomy.

Certainly, no onebegrudges the TFN a brightand prosperous future. Itis well past time they canspread their wings eco-nomically and soar to new

heights.Unfortunately, the path

they are choosing by goingthe huge destination mallroute is fraught with a verylikely chance of long-termfailure.

TFN, develop your ownsolution. How about a“Town Centre” design, withwinding streets and treesthat features a variety ofindividual shops and res-taurants (Granville Islandcomes to mind?)

People might bicycleor stroll the avenues andenjoy a real taste of thefine First Nation culture, which would be much bet-ter served and ultimately, sustainable.

Editor:Re: Rabbits to be relo-

cated, Jan. 11I am an average citizen

living in Richmond. I havelived here on and off for 30years. I pay my taxes, I amlaw-abiding. I even workedfor the city for 15 years.

I enjoy nature and I liketo take walks in MinoruPark. But every walk I takein the park is now depress-ing and sad and frustrating.

Every walk I take in thepark I see rabbits suffering.

Again and again I seerabbits injured and in pain.I ask the city for help, butit’s not interested. I tell itof a rabbit I see with a hor-rible oozing infected eye.I’m told they will “makepatrols.”

You see, I am just anaverage citizen. In theireyes, I don’t matter. If anaverage citizen doesn’t mat-

ter, than what chance doesa suffering rabbit have ofmattering?

I have never owned arabbit in my life. I havehad very little contact withrabbits. But I recognize suf-fering when I see it and Ibelieve it does matter.

And I may be just anunimportant average citi-zen, but unlike the rabbits,

I do have a voice and I canspeak out. What I see everyweek in the park, on everywalk I take, is not accept-able. And I will not staysilent about the suffering Isee.

In the words of MartinLuther King, Jr.: “Our livesbegin to end the day webecome silent about thingsthat matter.”

I know I am not alonein my refusal to keep quietand accept the suffering ofthe rabbits.

Thank you, Delta, forcaring enough to not keepsilent when your rabbitswere suffering.

I hope one day Richmondwill listen and choose not tostay silent as well.

Cindy Howard

Big question is whether malls are viable

MI wrote last month to invite you

to church, any church, on ChristmasEve and to be open to what Jesus hadto say to you.

Did you make it? Yes and youintend to go back! Yes, life is full. Iknow that reality.

I had great intentions about mycolumn. Thought about it Sunday, deferred until Monday, held it overuntil Tuesday and promised to doit Wednesday. Wednesday night theeditor emailed: “Just a reminder thatyou are up for Friday’s paper.” Act onyour good intentions!

You went and it was not a “posi-tive experience.” Christmas Eve isan affair of state planned by ama-teurs under pressure. Give a regularSunday a try. If not, like a smorgas-

bord, there is always another churchto taste.

Even we clergy miss the mark. Imet some folks on Christmas Eveand later met them in the midst oftoo many things happening for me.I missed the cue to further conver-sation. I hope I will have a secondchance to connect.

If you did not go, I am reissuingthe invitation. We are a year-roundorganization.

In John’s story of Jesus, Jesusmeets Phillip who gets so excitedabout Jesus that he finds Nathanieland invites him. Phillip is reluctantand skeptical. Nathaniel says, “Comeand see!” The invitation still stands.

Chia seeds (Salvia hispanica L.) were first usedas food as early as 3,500 BC and were one

of the mainstays of the Aztec and the Mayan diets.Chia seeds are so versatile that they were eaten asa grain, consumed as a beverage when mixed withwater, ground into flour, included in medicines, pressed for oil and used as a base for face and bodypaints. Chia was so highly valued for its nutritionaland hydrating properties that it was used as a formof currency. This superseed is the highest-plant based

source of omega-3 (ALA) at 19.3 percent andis naturally rich in soluble fibre, protein andantioxidants. This makes it a great whole food foranyone interested in improving their health andreducing their risk of illness.

What are the benefits of Omega-3 fats?Omega-3 fats are a group of polyunsaturated fats.Beyond reducing the risk of heart disease, omega-3s can reduce the risk of stroke while helping toreduce symptoms of hypertension, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),joint pain and other rheumatoid problems, as wellas certain skin ailments. Some research has shownthat omega-3s can boost the immune system andhelp protect from an array of illnesses includingAlzheimer’s disease.Omega-3s also play an important role in

brain functioning. Omega-3 fats are highlyconcentrated in the brain and appear to beimportant for cognitive (brain memory andperformance) and behavioural function.

Why the recent interest in increasing Omega-3?While omega-3s protect our hearts and fightinflammation, omega-6s are now the foundationof our modern food supply. Omega-6 fats competewith omega-3 fats for absorption and have led towidespread omega-3 deficiency. Symptoms of thisdeficiency include poor circulation, poor memory, fatigue, heart problems, mood swings or depression.

While reducing your intake of omega-6s canhelp, getting more omega-3s from food is aneven better way to go. The recommendation is toconsume two3-4ounce servings of fattyfish aweek, but it is suggested that this is not environmentallysustainable. We need to look to plant sources tomeet our global needs. These include chia seedsand flax seeds.

Because of their nutritional value andstability, chia seeds are now beingadded to a range of foods. COBSBread, a Canadian bakery chain, offersfreshly baked white, whole wheat andflax chia seed breads. A large numberof COBS’ customers have switched

from the traditional bread range to thechia bread range since its launch lastJanuary. “People are very interested inupgrading to our CHIA Bread oncethey hear about all its health benefits”says Elise Gillespie, Vice President ofCOBS Bread. “The challenge is gettingthat message out to the general public.”

Ramona Josephson RD applaudsthese breads as exciting, healthyadditions to a daily diet and as apositive step in tackling serious healthconcerns related to heart disease andblood sugar control. Two slices ofCOBS CHIA Bread provide 100%of the daily intake of omega-3 fats

for children and women and 90% formen. They also provide up to 30%of the daily recommended intake ofdietary fibre. “Bread is a staple in somany of our diets and COBS’ newCHIA Breads make it easy to meetour daily needs for these nutrients,”Josephson adds.

How to brightenwinter gardens

Winter-flowering plantsgive pleasure out of all pro-portion to their size or num-bers — and one of the mostspectacular is the golden-flowered witch-hazel. Theblooms of this glorious treeare like a burst of sunshinein grey Januaries. Later, thebright yellow leaves warmup fall.

People looking for aslow-growing tree with twoseasons of beauty have achance to see witch-hazelsin bloom right now at theirlocal nursery. This is defi-nitely the time to check outflower colour and fragrancewhile you can see, andsmell, exactly what youwould be getting.

Generally it’s the golden-flowered witch-hazels thatare fragrant. This includesthe deep yellow Arnold’sPromise and the pale yellowPallida. But not all witch-hazel flowers are golden. Some are orange (Jelena)while others are variousshades of red (Diane orRuby Glow).

Where flowers are red ororange, fragrance is usuallyfaint or missing and thefall foliage tends to be red, orange or a spectacular mixof both.

Witch-hazel is fairlyeasy to grow, hardy to zonefive and tolerant of manysoils (though happiest inwell-drained but moisture-retentive ones). The spideryflowers open in early tomid-January and scrunchup in bitter cold, then openwide again when the tem-perature rises. Most of thepopular, easy-to-get witch-hazels are hybrids betweenthe Japanese witch-hazel(Hamamelis japonica) andthe small, fragrant Chinesewitch-hazel (Hamamelismollis). Besides beingslow-growing, H. mollis isalso very slow to root dur-ing attempts at propagation.

That’s why witch-hazelhybrids are usually graftedonto a faster-rooting,more vigorous species:Hamamelis virginiana. Thehybrids are still slow-grow-ing but eventually reachabout 15 feet (four metres). They’re hardier than thespecies and easy to garden

under because the branchesare diagonally upright nearground level, branchingand widening as they gainheight. Cutting witch-hazelbranches for indoor vasescan trigger sucker growthbelow the graft because therootstock tries to replacethe lost branches. It’s bestto pull suckers off whenvery young because oldersuckers need to be cut andwill likely re-grow.

These H. virginianasuckers produce small yel-low flowers in fall that arehidden by yellow leaves— nice, but not hugelyornamental. This is themedicinal witch-hazel usedin herbal medicine for itsastringent effect on bloodvessels.

Generally, witch-hazelsneed very little pruningaside from the removalof dead, badly placed ordiseased branches. Theirresponse to pruning isunpredictable. Instead ofshoots appearing wheregrowth buds ought to be,they will instead producebranches from very incon-venient spots.

Witch-hazel seed usuallyneeds two chilly wintersoutside to remove germina-tion inhibitors. This was thetiming when I grew themfrom seed. It took an addi-tional eight years of growth(and a severe talk to themabout composting!) beforeflowers appeared.

I’ve heard they can belayered. Most shrubs canbe, though with witch-hazels I suspect it would bea long process in view oftheir generally slow growth.

Breeders in the U.S.are working on improve-ments to a winter-flower-ing American witch-hazelspecies H. Vernalis whichreaches only six to eightfeet (2-2.5 m). Flowers ofsome of the results are saidto range from reddish pur-ple to purple. These includeH. vernalis Amethyst saidto have purple-red flowerswith a spicy scent and scar-let foliage in fall.

With the hustle of the holidays adistant but fond memory, you maybe looking forward to a trip south toavoid the worst of winter. It may bea quick jaunt in search of sun andsand, or an extended visit to savoursome rest and relaxation. Short stopor long stay, there are a few travelinsurance considerations you shouldkeep in mind when preparing foryour trip.

The most important thing toremember is that travel insuranceprotects you againstmany circumstancesthat may not becovered by yourgovernment healthpolicy, and providescoverage in emergencymedical situations. Thatmeans travel insuranceis supplemental toyour provincial healthcare policy, and it doesnot cover your continuing care orcheck-ups. Once the emergency istaken care of, the coverage for thatparticular condition or conditionsrelated to it is ended.

To get the most out of yourtravel insurance policy, you shouldtake care to complete a medicalhealth questionnaire as accuratelyas possible if you are asked tosubmit one. Travel insurance ratesare determined by several factors, including age and health, and anyexisting health condition that is notdeclared will not be covered by yourinsurance or a substantial deductiblemay be imposed. We recommendthat you consult your physician if

you are unsure about any of thehealth conditions or the status ofyour health.

While base policies don’t typicallyprovide coverage for unstablepre-existing health conditions, BCAATravel Insurance offers you theoption to purchase additionalcoverage. In general, if a conditionhas been treated by a physician,or has required a change ofmedication within a certain periodof time (specified in the definitions

of the policy you’reresearching orpurchasing), it will beconsidered unstableand not covered.

Finally, before yougo, always reviewpolicy details to ensureyour coverage meetsyour needs and payparticular attention tothe related definitions

to ensure you have coverage foryour unique situation.

Having the right travel insurance isequally as important as choosing theright vacation destination. Whetheryou’re travelling on a short stop ora long stay, you can relax and focuson enjoying yourself knowing youhave taken care to protect yourself.Purchasing the right travel insurancecoverage from BCAA before you gomight be the best travel accessoryyou bring along on your nextvacation.

Pack some peace-of-mind.

South Delta secondary’s ShaneDagg is among 37 players namedto the B.C. Elite Youth Sevensrugby program that will be partici-pating in next month’s Las VegasInvitational Sevens.

The players will soon be divided

into three teams to compete inone of North America’s largestyouth rugby tournaments. BritishColumbia-1 (BC-1) and BC-2 havebeen entered into the ‘InternationalHigh School Elite 7s’ competitionwhile the third and younger BC-3

squad will compete in the ‘HighSchool Boys 7s’ division.

Dagg also plays at the club levelfor Bayside RFC’s junior program.

“We spend most of the yearholding ID camps and trials to getthe top athletes together for this

tournament,” said B.C. head coachShane Thompson after announcinghis traveling roster. “The Vegasevent is quickly growing into thelargest youth tournament and weare able to field teams at a feasiblecost. As a provincial program, we

need tournaments like these whichserve as great measuring sticks forus to see where we are in compari-son to other programs.”

The players will assemble inVancouver on Feb. 4 for a campbefore traveling south to Vegas.

Dagg named to Team B.C. for Rugby Sevens tourney in Las Vegas

Spencer Traher’s road to becom-ing the likely scoring championof the Pacific International JuniorHockey League is certainly animprobable one.

The 20-year-old from Ladneris enjoying an outstanding finalseason of junior hockey as a keymember of the Delta Ice Hawks.Traher tops the league in scor-ing with 59 points, including 23goals, in just 32 games. That’senough for a seven point cushionon Richmond’s Jeremy Hamaguchiwith just a handful of gamesremaining. He would become thesecond straight South Delta MinorHockey alumni to win the title, after Liam Harding took the hon-ours last season.

However, four years ago, thespeedy centre was better knownfor his ability in a shutdowndefensive role.

His biggest assignment camein the 2009 B.C. Major MidgetHockey League championshipseries when he lined-up againstcurrent Edmonton Oilers starRyan Nugent-Hopkins as a mem-ber of the Greater VancouverCanadians.

His team would go on to lose2-1 in a third and deciding over-time game heartbreaker to theVancouver Northwest Giants.

“My role was to be a thirdline centre and match up againstthe other teams top forwards,”recalled Traher. “That meant a lotof ice time in the playoffs. I didenjoy playing the power play but Ididn’t get the chance to be one ofthe top guys.”

Traher cracked the Ice Hawksline-up the following season and, ironically, his roster spot was

secured when he showed he couldplay on the blueline when the teamwas shorthanded for an exhibitiongame.

Ice Hawks general managerPeter Zerbinos had watched himgrow up through minor hockeyand was confident his skill set wassuited to a more offensive role.

Traher began the 2009-10 cam-paign playing along side fellowrookie Cody Smith. After a slowstart, the two found their comfortlevel and would be key figures inhelping the Ice Hawks reach theplayoff finals before falling toAldergrove.

Today, the two remain line-mates and are considered the mostdynamic offensive duo in theleague. Smith is sixth scoring with42 points.

“He’s a good player that isreally quick and we have just hada lot of success playing together,”said Traher. “My job at first wasputting the puck into open icefor him to skate onto and scoregoals. Now, I’ve become more of ascorer as well.”

The pair want nothing morethan to conclude their Ice Hawkcareers by winning a champion-ship. Last year, Delta dropped aseven game conference final seriesto the Richmond Sockeyes and thetwo rivals seem destined to meetagain.

“It’s impossible not thinkingabout (winning) a scoring title butI will gladly finish fifth or sixth ifit means we win a championship, continued Traher. “We have comeclose and this is an experiencedgroup with a lot of 1991s and thatshould help come playoff time.

“There are a lot of guys herethat deserve a ring and I think weknow that now January is here, it’stime to get down to business.”

Hockey beyond the PIJHL,could have Traher suiting upfor the UBC Thunderbirds nextseason. He is a second-year stu-dent at the Point Grey campusand has been skating with theThunderbirds when the opportu-nity presents itself.

He has already proven he is

capable of playing any role theteam made need him for.

Icing...Traher was selected to play in

Monday’s PIJHL all-star gamebut it was cancelled due to theextreme winter driving conditionsin the Fraser Valley. As was theAbbotsford Pilots visit to Ladner

on Tuesday to face the Ice Hawks. With another game also post-poned, the league is now consider-ing adding an additional week tothe regular season for make-upgames.

The Ice Hawks do return toaction on Tuesday when the NorthDelta Devils visit at 7:30 p.m.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections January 22 - 28★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Aries March 21 - April 19: Beambitious Sunday, but don’t expectcooperation. This night through Tuesdaybrings joy, friends, optimism, freshness, plans for the future, and wish fulfillment– a trend that will last until late February. It’s a splendid time to make new friends, but not with a Libra, Capricorn, Gemini orVirgo before Friday (OK after that). Retreatfor a wee rest Wednesday/Thursday. Yourenergy surges upward Friday/Saturday– a wish could come true Saturday. Allweek, work gears down…a breathercomes, through mid-April. Love takes ashy/private road, but will trumpet itself inFebruary.

Taurus April 20-May 20: People whohave been working against you (if theyhave) back off now to mid-April. Youget, during the same period, some relieffrom burdens (though an old one mightreturn). A secret romantic attraction,or a research-heavy creative project (ifthey exist) also wilt. In April, though, allthese will “catch fire” again. So use theinterval to decide what to accept/pursue,what not to. Otherwise, use the weeksahead for business, career, prestige andstatus concerns. Be ambitious, especiallySunday night to Tuesday. Success awaits!Joy, friends midweek. Rest, plan Friday/Saturday.

Gemini May 21-June 20: Thefour weeks ahead bring a mellow, understanding mood. It’s a little early forbig, new, splendiferous love, but the lovethat exists grow finer, sweeter. Discussmeaningful things with your spouse,

lover, whomever. Far travel, legal matters, international concerns, higher education, religion, publishing – these succeed overthe weeks ahead, especially Sunday nightthrough Tuesday (when a new projectmight begin in these zones). Sundaycontains one last echo of health concern, sexual urge or financial derring-do.Now to mid-April, an old property/familyhope might return.

Cancer June 21-July 22: The weeksahead feature mysteries, depths, research, sexual urges, subconsciousdesires, hunches and intuit ion.Investments and other heavy finances(mortgages, debts, a partner’s worth, etc.) will become important. All these aredoubly accented Sunday night throughTuesday, when a new project might beborn. Sunday daytime contains somerelationship puzzles or frustrations. Amild, understanding mood flows over youWednesday/Thursday – solve legal, traveland educational problems Wednesday. Beambitious Friday/Saturday. All week, thenews you receive is “realistic,” correct.

Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Relationshipscome to the fore through the weeks ahead.Be diplomatic, eager to join, or you’llcreate opposition. If you co-operate, you’llopen the door to opportunities, success, even love. (Though truthfully, love isn’t abig possibility before June.) Money hasflowed your way since November, but nowthe flow curls, ebbs – the faucet will turnon again in April. Meanwhile, pay yourdebts, avoid spending. Chores or illnessmar Sunday, but this night to Tuesday

brings fresh horizons, opportunities.Thursday/Friday steer you into deeperwaters: desire, big finances – careful!Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Employment, chores, machinery and health concerns fillthe weeks ahead (especially this Monday/Tuesday). A new project might begin inone of these – but take care on the moneyand legal sides, as some glitches exist.(E.g., don’t overpay for that bulldozer, and make sure the transfer papers arecorrect.) Relationships, opposition andopportunity, new horizons, excitingmeetings, negotiations fill Wednesday/Thursday. A subtle but firm “difficulty”exists between you and another whichcan make communication slow. No harmhere. Late week wakens your desires, financial and sexual.Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The weeksahead are filled with the sweetness of love, especially for teens and twenty-types.Rest or clean house Sunday daytime. Thisnight through Tuesday romance, creativeurges, speculative and adventurous risks, beauty and deep pleasure pull you – andsucceed. But let me raise a wee caution:you might, in succeeding, be indulginglust, and closing a door to love with a verymarriageable person. (This danger laststo Friday, then ebbs.) Protect your healthand tackle chores Wednesday/Thursday –don’t buy machinery. Relationships movewell Friday, stumble slightly Saturday.Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Sink intodomestic situations.Home, nature, garden, farm are your natural habitat through theweeks ahead. Pay attention to nutrition,

soul, digestion. (Funny how stomach andsoul are so connected.) You might start anew yard or property project, especiallyMonday/Tuesday. You’ll feel sluggish,so get lots of rest. Romance, nature’sbeauty, charming children and a creativesurge visit you Wednesday/Thursday. Inromance, you might feel communicationsare slow or mildly obstructive. Avoidactions that can lead to gossip. Tacklechores Friday/Saturday. All’s well!

Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21:Communications, short trips, paperwork, details, news media, errands, siblingsand casual acquaintances fill the fewweeks ahead. You’ll be busy, but this isnot an important time, so stay relaxed.Protect your money Sunday – don’t shop.Monday/Tuesday favour trips, calls andfriends. Sink into home or foundationalmatters Wednesday/Thursday: nutrition, soul, children, systems at the workplace, plumbing, etc. Your romantic side flaresnicely Friday/Saturday – but this is not agood time to start a love affair. You’ll enjoythese two days: the world looks wide andwelcoming!

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Chasemoney for the few weeks ahead, especiallythis Monday/Tuesday, when an earnings(or purchasing) project might begin. Butremain cautious through Thursday, asyour ideas and your speech tend to dead-end against a higher-up’s staunch, politerefusal. (Buy NO communications devices– nor anything used – before Friday.)Your energy remains high Sunday. Later,Wednesday/Thursday are for paperwork,

errands, calls and contacts – busy, light stuff. Bury yourself in domestic, foundational, security and retirementmatters Friday/Saturday. Until April, alegal hassle takes a breather.Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Your energy, magnetism, effectiveness and timingsurge to a yearly high now through lateFebruary. Start important projects, seepeople, ask favours, tackle formerlydaunting tasks – you’re on a path tosuccess! However, exercise some cautionthis week – people might talk, or a secretbe exposed through Thursday: remainmoral, and keep what’s private, private. This is not the best week to seek medicalopinions/aid. The strong sexual and/orfinancial urges of the last three monthsease now to mid-April – then will beginagain. Rest Sunday. Conquer the worldMonday/Tuesday!Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Rest, retreat, contemplate and meditate. Your spiritual, charitable side needs to breathe, to act.Contact government agencies, institutionsand company head offices. Seek therapy, advice. All this, Monday/Tuesday, and forfour weeks. Take care through Thursdayin relationships, investments, health andsex: others say the outlook is rosy, butyou know the reality. Your relationshipshave been intense, exciting since mid-November. Now someone intriguing“backs off” to April. It’s just a pause– he/she needs to digest recent events.Success, Wednesday/Thursday! Chasemoney Friday.
