Delta Kappa Gamma International / Alpha Sigma State
It’s the holidays. I have memories from my
childhood about having relatives over. My
siblings and I were always good at enter-
taining each other. Since my parents were
both only children, we usually were the
only young people at the holiday events!!
Later I became my mother’s co-host. Now
I am the obvious choice to host family
events. It can be stressful at times, but to
me the best is when my nieces and neph-
ews come, and it becomes a little chaotic.
My older children don’t always make it
home, and that makes me so sad. I take
great joy in my niece’s daughter, who is
two. I think we all love watching the holi-
days through a child’s eye. That’s why all
of us teach. I would like you to try to
recapture your childhood in some way
during this holiday season. See the
holidays through a child’s eye!!

Area IV Breakfast
Each year the chapters making up Area IV host
a breakfast to bond. There are always interest-
ing speakers and presentations. The speaker
this year is Becci Crowe. She will be sharing
her latest trip to China and her studies of
pandas. Pandas are the breakfast’s theme and
Alpha chapter encourages guests to come
dressed in black and white to make the theme
really come together. Registration for this
event is a little different than other DKG
events. Complete the registration form, then
please give it with payment to Betty by Dec. 8th
at out annual Auction. She has to submit all of
our registrations and payments at one time in
one single check. I really encourage all Kappa
members to attend, especially if you haven’t
been to an Area IV event in a while. It will be a
great way to bond with fellow members from
other chapters. Thanks, Chris
Pat McCann

Start Up in Alpha Chapter, Japan
By Joy Lauderbaugh
A new state and first chapter were inaugurat- ed in Kochi, Ja-
pan on October 11, 2012. Sixty one educators were initiated
into Delta Kappa Gamma in a special ceremo- ny. Intl. Presi-
dent Beverly Helms and Executive Director Corlea Plowman
conducted the evening with grace and aplomb. Dignitaries from
local school boards, the Mayor of Kochi and the Kochi Prefecture
Governor Osaki welcomed this new organization to Japan. They cited the women
of Kochi as leaders in education and women’s rights. The evening featured a tradi-
tional banquet with special dancers and music. The local press was there and a
photo was in the paper the next day – along with another photo of a sumo wrestler.
Kathy Sakuda, Hawaii’s state president, welcomed everyone. The new members
received their pins after the initiation, leis, a traditional hug, and bags of goodies.
All remarks were given in two languages. The previous night, new chapter mem-
bers hosted the visitors to a special dinner featuring two geishas.
Three US members represented California, Arizona and Washington. When the
various gifts were acknowledged, Washington and Kappa Chapter were recognized
for the walnut gavel used during the ceremonies. Its brass plate was inscribed:
“To Alpha Chapter, Japan from Alpha Sigma State (WA) and Kappa Chapter,
October 2012”.
In preparation for the expansion, the Hawaiian delegation worked with the Kochi
women for two years. They gave them an orientation to the Society, discussed the
purposes, practiced the songs, and nominated the officers.
Joy Lauderbaugh, Kappa, toured Shikoku Island with 27 Hawaiian sisters and a
few husbands for a week. The experiences were varied and represented traditional
culture. They went on a river boat cruise, watched experts insert the small pebble
that would become a cultured pearl into oysters, walked many steps to see the Ko-
chi Castle and a Buddhist Temple. They went to a Kabuki play with three black
garbed masters manipulating each puppet. They shopped in the Sunday morning
outdoor market, viewed enormous whirlpools from a bridge 300’ above the water,
ate sushi, sweet potato ice cream cones and soba noodles, and viewed a samurai
movie before crossing over the world’s longest suspension bridge. The biggest chal-
lenge was sleeping on tatami mats on a 2” high mattress.
The opportunity to make friends with the new Japanese sisters was a once-in-a-
lifetime treat. Japan became the 18th country to belong to DKG. To celebrate this
new connection, the Creative Arts Retreat in June, 2013 will feature the culture of
the Japanese people. Arigato (thanks) for reading this.

A note from one of our members:
Our granddaughter was born November 11, at
6:05 p.m., weighing in at 8 lbs. 10 ozs of cute
and cuddly. Her name is Alice Eleanor Rip-
pey. Audrey and Matt gave her my mother's
name, which is so special to all our family.
Mother and baby are doing well, but both are
very tired. Dad Rippey is ecstatic but very
tired too! We had fun seeing them all for the
first time last evening. Now we have some-
thing really special to be thankful for on
Thanksgiving! Shirley

How To Observe Thanksgiving
Count your blessings instead of your crosses;
Count your gains instead of your losses.
Count your joys instead of your woes;
Count your friends instead of your foes.
Count your smiles instead of your tears;
Count your courage instead of your fears.
Count your full years instead of your lean;
Count your kind deeds instead of your mean.
Count your health instead of your wealth;
Count on God instead of yourself.
